Your Washing Machine-Which and Why do you Like/Dislike it?

I'm in need of a new washer and need some opinions. I don't want a front load...top load...personal choice.

Not the brand although that is important. They have the new ones without an agitator that you can put more stuff in. I thought great...until I talked to someone today that didn't like it.

So now I'm confused.

What do you have and why do you like it or dislike it?

I have one!! Mine is a whirlpool high efficiency, top loading, without the agitator. I got it on sale at Lowe's for $499, and I love it! It gets my clothes clean and it uses a LOT less water to do so, which is important to me just because my water heater won't fill a whole washer with hot water, it just doesn't have enough. The thing about the no agitator, you still have to have an opening in the middle where the agitator would be. You can still dump a bunch of clothes in at once, and then push the clothes out of the way until you make an opening to the bottom in the middle. You do have to buy HE detergent, regular detergent makes too much suds for the amount of water used. For my particular model, I have to use a downy ball for fabric softener or wait for the beginning of the rinse cycle. You put the fabric softener in the downy ball and it opens up when you get to the rinse cycle. Dunno how it does it, but it works! Another thing, instead of selecting a load size, it determines the amount of clothes in the washer and adds water accordingly. So cool! It makes a lot of strange, unconventional sounds, you gotta get used to that. If you have any other questions about it just ask!
I have the top loader without the agitator and I love it.
I have the more traditional top loader, with agitator.
It's the Amana commercial washer, super capacity plus with a stainless drum. Living on a farm, lots of dog stuff, and a husband who works dirty jobs means my washer gets major workout. I wash regular laundry, Todd's filthy work gear, rugs, dog beds, and much more disgusting stuff. ;)
This one is 3 or 4 years old and doing great. I have burnt out many way before this....at one point I was on 1st name basis with the appliance store - they suggested this one and it has worked like a charm. :D
Two friends just bought the Whirlpool, top load without agitator and love them. Here water saving is huge so they made sure it had that feature. One is a powdered detergent fan and is pissed she now needs liquid for the dispenser....fill once for several loads. She'll live. Both commented on how dry the clothes come out of the washer to where dryer time is minimal. Did mention to read instructions as there's a specific way the clothes must go in, you can't just dump them in.
What models of top loader/no agitator do y'all have? I'm also looking into a new washing machine and would love a T.L./N.A.
I hate the non-agitator washers! We got our Kenmore one year ago and it sucked from day one. Clothes aren't clean half the time and without the agitator, bulky things like sheets and blankets float up and they don't even get wet so everything has to be rewashed. No savings there! :headbang:

Give me a real, water-wasting normal detergent using agitator :go: machine any day.
I will never go front load again. We've been looking for a top load washer again.

...from having to bend down to get my clothes, from not being able to stop it midwash to add something quickly, to not being able to stop it midwash to let it soak (mine drains the water the second you pause it), and from the constant maintenance. Suck Suck Suck... there's a filter at the bottom that needs to be changed all the time to prevent your clothes smelling like mold ...we've had a floor, and then there's the odor in general even after leaving doors open and detergent drawers open.

I don't even know why they become popular. Looking forward to reading about top loaders with good reviews!
We have a front load Samsung and I AM the agitator!!! Just ask Jen.

Seriously, we love the front loader. Up until just this past week everything was great and we had the water level sensor go out. So I have to wait a week for that rather rare part to fail comes in then I get to replace it. This is the kind of thing that can go wrong with any washer, how ever it's not a good thing with a front loader as it filled with too much water which forced the door open with about 15 gallons of water inside. That water very quickly found it's way to the floor! Fair amount of cussing and mopping it was all over.

In the end, i still like the front loaders. We bought the pedestals about a year after the W/D and are very glad we did. We just waited for them to go on sale and one day found them for 50% off at Lowes!

I think the lack of agitator works better in a front loader...gravity ensures that everything gets wet. :D

I have had a front loader for 7 years and never had a problem with odor and have no idea what this filter is that you mention. Maybe that is a brand by brand difference?

I can understand the bending over. That can be a pain, but if you have pedestal (I don't) I think that helps.

I love the front loader w/ no agitator purely because I can fit so much in it.
We were told when we bought our F/L washer to prevent the washer and clothes from smelling oddly to either wipe the seal, all surfaces with a paper towel or just not close the door all the way. This would allow all water to dry up. We've opted for leaving the door open and have never had an issue after three years.

I'm with you Nita, don't change what ain't broken! My old machine and my old TV are just fine, thank you. Dryer is newer but nothing fancy.
Mine is a whirlpool w10469645A.

I forgot to mention, it also has a washer cleaning cycle, in case it starts to get smelly!
the washer cleaning cycle worked for ours but the smell would come back ...even after using the tide cleaning detergent for the washer machine. I just know that it does seem to be the most common complaint on every site I've gone to when shopping for one :( ...and the reviewers all left the doors open. Be nice to get a model that didn't do that like some of you mentioned.

We also do quadruple the amount of washing than a normal home w/the amount of people. I think it was GE, but I'm not sure. It's in storage now. It's a nice one ...and is only 4 years old.
We had a regular washer that got an awful smell in it, I finally fixed that by wiping the entire insides of it down with whatever cleaning product was on hand.
Smelly washer syndrome has been around for about 5 years or so. The use of all the new synthetic rubbers, plastics, etc is the cause. This guy figured it out years ago and came up with a cleaner. I don' thave a stinky washer but I do get stinky towels as they age so think I might try one of his products:

Our washer is now about 5 years old... we wrote about the great deal we got at the time.

It doesn't smell at all; we only do a few loads a week now. We dry out the drawer and leave the front door open between use. We've only done the "machine self-clean" cycle with bleach once, and it wasn't for any reason just following the suggestion in the manual early on.

It's a great machine, quiet as a church mouse even when spinning up at 1300 RPM. It's in our tiny laundry room which is on the first floor right next to our den where we watch TV. With the door closed you don't even really hear it running when the TV is on. You might catch the sound of water hammer but that's probably as much an issue with our pipes as it is with the washer's valves that slam closed instead of shutting slowly.

We still love them.
I have a Kenmore top loader with no agitator and I absolutely love it! It's older, I think I got it in 2004 and I've never had a problem with it not getting clothes clean and I love that I can wash comforters in it! And it really does cut down on drying time because the clothes are so dry when they are finished washing. You do have to be careful how you load it, but that's a small thing.
I weighed the pro's and con's and took the plunge.

After haggling with the manager over the delivery charge, I bought a Samsung He top loader. No agitator. I still have to pay $80 for delivery but it comes with a rebate for the full $80 back and he took off another $40 for my trouble

It was alot more than I wanted to spend but I checked around for hours today, going to all the different stores and ended up back where I started.

I just hope I did the right thing cause I'm running out of clean clothes.
Good luck...and can't wait for your review on it ;)
Read instructions! Two friends with machines, one read the instructions, the other skimmed. The skimmed reader was the one with problems until she educated herself. The reader just loves to read instruction books! Her grandkids keep her up on newest technology so she has plenty of reading material, LOL!

GE--now THERE is the problem! Hate GE appliance... have never had any luck with them what so ever! I am a Kenmore , Electrolux and Maytag gal. Only Kenmore for the kitchen-- electrolux vacum, and Maytag front load epic washer and dryer. What is this filter thing? Mine doesn't have that, and has never smelled either. I do know that is a common complaint, but we have't had that problem. Love the large drums. We opted for the pedestals, and it makes loading, unloading a breeze.
I think Ron and I got our washer/dryer sets around the same time, and I think
I remember talking about this before. I took weeks comparing washers and reading
reviews, going to the stores to look and asking questions. I am glad I did too. I
had always had a traditional top loader before and chose to go with the front loader
this time. I spent more money than I wanted, but it has been well worth it.
I have a set of maytags. In fact I have them stacked. My washer doesn't even use
10 gallons for and entire cycle- nowhere near. I can't see the water level, it never gets
as high as the door, and I can pause the cycle at any point and open the door. I do use HE detergent and if I don't it suds' pretty much. I love my washer and dryer.
I have never had washer stink. I use bleach a lot though. If it is colorfast I bleach it.
And for space saving I love the stacking.
Both are extra king size capacity, and cavernous. I have never seen any larger than mine.
I don't think I'd go back to a top loader. I am short though and occasionally have an
issue getting stuff out of the back/bottom of the dryer, but I figure it's a small price.
As long as I have a step stool I'm good.

For what it's worth, here is a quick update on my FL washer and it's rogue water level sending unit. After waiting for a week for the part to come in, I went back online to look for the actual location of the sensor. I pulled two screws that secured the top and lifted it off. When I located the sensor, I was a bit surprised to see a bare nipple on the bottom. I said to myself, 'Vance, that prolly ought to be a hose on that nipple.' and I was right. About 10 inches below was a small black hose with a finger clamp. Sure enough, it was just long enough to reach the nipple without any kinks. So I reworked the clamp to make it a bit tighter in its relaxed state, slipped the hose on and placed the clamp on it.

With one load already done with no leaks it's clear to me that my curiosity just saved me $19.66!

Maybe someone will get something out of my little success.

Awesome, Vance!

Great find!!!

I'm tucking that one away for future reference. LOL

(Just dawned on me... was the disconnected hose leaking into the cabinet??)
Ron, I think the hose handled such a small amount of water and we caught it quick enough there was now pooling of water at all. Good on me I guess.

I have a Kenmore Elite washer and dryer. I bought it about 8 months ago and have loved it. It is top load. I didn't want a front load either. Because I heard they have mold issues and I'm always adding clothes half way through. I have been thrilled with my new machines. Plus I like to support Sears, as they are an American company and are big on supporting our returning troops with jobs. (I'm a Marine Wife) My machine are energy efficient and have numerous settings which I love. Whitests whites, towels, darks, delicates etc. No need to determine the load size as it does it for you. I love everything about it. It has not agitator and holds my queen sized comforter easily too.
I like my Kenmore top loader. When plugged in, I just give the dial a twist and a push, and it gets all my clothes clean- no more scrubbing on the rocks in the river......Good luck finding your perfect appliance.
The one thing that I realized about the digital models is that you can't force the machine from one stage to the next in the cycle. Sometimes I would push the machine through or past a step to speed things up. Probably not the best thing for the machine, but I did it anyway. I can't do that with our digital model. With the problem we had with our washer this last week, this would have helped out greatly.
