Poor Garfunkel...HELP

Poor baby has a growth or a sore or something on his back end. I noticed him licking back there, its about an inch or two above the "out door", last night. I looked and didn't see anything. I was thinking clingons but there were none. Come home from work today and notice he's licking, licking, and pulling on something. Tell dh to look, which was useless as he just looked 8O and said there's nothing there.

I get the flashlight and get the dog on the grooming table and really checked it out. Found ?something?. Get the shaver out and tell dh I need a hand. We shaved and looked and shaved some more and looked. There IS something there but we can't seem to get close enough even with the shaver.

He will go to the Vet tomorrow but in the mean time, I put the cone of shame on him to keep him from licking but he's misirable and wants to lick. It has to itch or hurt, I'm not sure witch.

Is there anything I can put on it to make it stop itching and or hurting?

I think you should put the cone of shame on him if you have one handy because he could be irritating whatever it is and making it worse.

Poor Gar. :ghug:

Let us know Pam what the vet says. We will be sending good thoughts your way.
Poor boy! I know he hates the cone, but better to be safe. Let us know how he gets on and give him a big smooch from me!
Are you sure you weren't feeling the end tip of the stub of what is left of the tail? Hope I make sense...Could he have eaten something that is stuck in there? Glad you are going to Vet and hope its not something stuck...Keep us posted.
Poor buddy. Ask your vet first but if it continues to be irritating...

Tronolane anesthetic cream may help soothe irritated back doors  It doesn't have any cortisone so it won't reduce
any swelling but it will provide quick relief. It contains zinc oxide so do NOT allow the dog to lick or consume it. I
asked my vet for approval to use it on Panda a few months ago... due to her fusing spine she can't reach it. 8)

Hope he checks out A-OK!
I thought about the stub...I've NEVER been able to find one on him. I've brushed him back there and its just not there. Plus the "spot" is above and to the side a little.

When we were inspecting, it almost looked like it might be a clingon, kind of brownish in color and it moved a little when we were fighting it to get a closer look. We tried to get under it with the shaver and couldn't. Maybe a skin tag?

He's just so miserable right now. Dh was rubbing his belly on his bed...Gar jumped down and walked into the bathroom. Dh checked on what he was doing, he was just standing there looking sad and forlorn.

I hate this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Poor Gar, hoping the vet can shed a light on the mysterious lump. Wondering if it might be a insect bite (spider or something along those lines) or a grass seed. Obviously something that is annoying him a lot at the moment. I'd be hesitant to apply anything till you find out what it is from the vet.

Let's know what the vet says when you take gar in.

Hugs for your baby :ghug:
Hoping you are at the vet now! :D

Yep the cone's not a favorite, but in this case was best to keep him from gnawing and licking the offending object back there. :?
I would have seconded the application of some numbing spray or cream as well, just to give him a bit of relief.
Instead of the cone for Jack which was driving us all nuts, we got an inflatable collar.....looks like a life preserver over their neck. It may not keep Gar from reaching the rear, nimble dogs might be able to get around it, but old stiff Jack stood no chance plus his booboo was under his arm pit. Stinker though did figure out how to get his tongue and nose between the two ends where they come together.......

Anyway, the collar allowed him more sight.....and the rest of us no bruised shins. He was far calmer...other than wanting to lick.
Hope you have had the opportunity for a vet exam by now.
It could be many things. Dogs can get insect bites there.
It's possible it is some minor infection or a small cyst or tumor.
Best to get it checked out ASAP.

We also ordered the soft collar - in our case the Kong cloud and
love using it instead of the plastic e-collar. In our case it worked well because the it was an abdominal incision so the collar prevented reaching that area. I don't think this type would work well on paws as I think the dog could still reach to lick those areas, but for trunk or butt, I think it should suffice.

Poor Gar. How miserable for him. Hope you got some good news today!
We use the Comfy cone availabe at PetCo and it works just fine. I hated the plastic E collar and the rubber donught didn't seem to work for us...

Hope he is feeling better...Go easy with the razor...if its something like a growth, etc, you certainly don't want to shave it off and cause a bigger problem...keep us posted...
Dh took Gar into the Vet this A.M. He was able to shave it much closer and revealed...a hot spot. Never understood why they call it that.

To me it looks a little raised. I didn't think that hot spots raised. We caught it soon enough that he doesn't need abx.

He was very restless last night and kept banging into things with the cone and waking me up. Needless to say, I was not at my most pleasant at work today.

So its the cone(oh yeah) and keeping it clean for the next week, or until it heals.
Poor Gar...
Well at least it wasn't anything terribly serious. But I have heard that hot spots can be pretty painful. Our vet recommends things like solarcaine to relieve the burning pain. He says it's like a sunburn for us.
It seems to help Mattie when she gets one.

Hope Gar feels better soon, and Mom gets a good night sleep

Glad to hear it's not something more serious and he gets better soon.

Cindy
They are often raised - from all the licking, moisture and inflammatory process. :(

Hope the poor guy and humans all get through this...quickly!
Suggestions what to use instead of an (Elizabethan) e-collar
