licking a sore

I need suggestions, please.
Howie went to the vet yesterday, follow up appointment for his surgeries. The vet said everything is healed,( a few remaining little scabs) no need for the cone. :clappurple: It has been on most of 28 days.

Problem is, I took the cone off last night. Howie has now licked the scabs and they are now tiny patches of irritated skin.

What do I do? Keep the cone on when we are not near him? Or is there something that I can put on the the skin the prevent him from licking?

A few more days and the skin will be healed.

Hey Howie! Shorts/underwear are your new best friend!
Shorts really?? Okay, I will give it a try.

My problem is Maggie will lick Rosie's sores...vet sold me a citric solution to put on sore...Maggie smells it now and won't come near it...tastes terrible! Rosie doesn't even try to lick it and she is a nervous licker even when there's nothing wrong.
Boxer briefs worked for us. Tighter legs stay in place better than regular shorts (compression shorts were too tight/rubbed and caused matting in a hurry) and make it less likely that a snout will get shoved in there to lick away. Also makes for a priceless photo when they decide to stretch out on their backs while sleeping (yes, I do have pictures somewhere of my drunk-passed-out-college-student dog).

Also, along the lines of the citric solution, a solution of tea tree oil in water (fairly mild, say, 10%) did the trick with our first dog. A couple of sprays and he'd leave the area alone. Second dog licks off the tea tree oil, so we've had to come up with other creative solutions.
Shorts Instead of an Elizabethan Collar - a Better Approach?
Ron, that is exactly what we do!
Howie's sutures are completely healed! Thanks for the suggestions of the shorts.

He wore my old pjs, and never complained.

Howie was so rough with his cone, we had to duct tape it!

Oh poor poor Howie. I can't wait to meet him and give him hugs.
Yea Howie, you're well :clappurple: And I must say, the pjs are so cute on you. :hearts:
Thats what we do to. Big tshirt tied around the waist. I even went out and got a childs pair of leggings and cut a whole for Matties little tail. They made her butt look so cute.

Glad to hear that Howie is doing much better.

He looks adorable in his PJs! An alternative to that E collar is a "Comfy Cone". We uses it for both our dogs ans they liked it better than the traditional elizabeth collar... But, if the shorts/PJs worked, good for you!

Howie is adorable! Glad he is feeling better!
Howie looks so cute in his PJ pants. :hearts:
