We found an Orthopedic Specialist

After several days of searching we found an Orthopedic Specialist whose "specialty" is luxating patella. We have an appointment for Ty to see him next Wednesday. I thought we would end up going to Cornell Vet Hospital but the Dr. we are seeing is actually a retired Dean from there and was recommended to me by one of the Vet School Professors.

I've been given a "preliminary" estimate of $1700-2600 PER LEG 8O My vet wasn't convinced that the second leg needs doing and wanted us to come back for xrays under anesthesia. But I decided that since he couldn't do the surgery it made more sense to have the Xrays done where I was going to have the surgery done.

According to the receptionist at the specialists office he can often tell by feel what needs to be done and they don't do the exrays until the time of the surgery, which saves the cost and trauma of unecessary anesthesia.

My next call was to my Cedit Union, I can get a Home Equity Loan with a reasonable interest rate. So I'm hoping for the "best case scenario" (one leg $1700) but preparing for the worst.

I've often wondered how you made the decision to spend such a huge amount of money on a dog but now that we are faced with it I realize there really is no "decision" to it, you do what you have to do.

Exactly, we do what we have to do.

You understand why I'm so grateful to Harry that he put his paw back down and told his he didn't need cruciate surgery yet. I know the surgery would be a crap shoot anyway since his structure is so bad, it would probably tear out again.

If LP surgery is needed (hopefully just one side) then I hope it goes well.

It's called LOVE!!

Glad you found a specialist. Hopefully he will tell you that only one leg requires surgery. Or maybe even that surgery is not required.
Good luck with your appt next week!
You definitely have a journey ahead of you. I hope the specialist will be able to help alot.

Yep you do what you have to do  Hope all goes well with ty and big hugs to the sweetie too.

I find vets worse for medical treatment costs then taking kids to the doctors for treatment, Frigthening the expenses when things go wrong.
