Midwest Sheepie Picnic - need advice

Hi gang - need advice.

I'm interested in seeing if there is interest in a "Midwest Sheepie Picnic" among members in the St. Louis area (MO, IL, AR, KS, TN, IA). More importantly at this stage, looking for advice regarding type of facilities for hosting the picnic. We have only one dog park in the St. Louis area, that I'm aware of, open to the public (no annual membership fees). However being open to the public, it can not be limited only to our dogs. Has anyone involved in these events used places other than enclosed facilities? Also any do's or don'ts or tips from your experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
George

PS: just received word that Purina Farms has an 8 acre fenced facility used for herding and lure coursing events with pavilion we can use at no charge. So looks like one problem may be solved - still looking for advice and suggestions though, as well as members interested in attending.

Why don't you come to our SheepieFest in October???
Hmm..this one might actually be doable. My hubby's brother lives in Columbia, so it would make for an excuse to visit them too. :)
The only suggestion I'd have is to move it closer to Michigan...
You can have it at my house
My girls are still looking for all their friends

Thanks for the invite, Stacy. I'd be afraid to take the guys on that long of a ride in my pickup, and it's a bit too far for a one day trip. Would like to hear how it went though. Never having been to such an event, do the owners just hang out and socialize while the dogs play, or is there some structure for the dogs, showing off tricks, playing games, races, etc. What kind of facilities are you using?

Gail,
Columbia is only 125 miles from St. Louis.
For ours, we planned ahead of time who would bring what as far as refreshments-- we had way more than enough. Of course, it helps when one of your group owns several Subway stores, too! I believe that we had a few party favors as well. Laurie had set up a couple kiddie pools for the dogs, which they loved.

If I had to make one suggestion, have it in an off leash environment, especially if people are traveling. (Which, by the sounds of it, you've found a great place!) It's a lot of time in the car for a dog and when they get out, they really benefit from running around and having a good time. If any of the dogs don't get along, the offender goes on a leash unless he can calm down, just like a dog park. It makes it a lot nicer for the humans involved too because you can walk around and socialize without having to worry about tugging one or more large dogs around on a leash. Also, if there's eating involved, you can use two hands!

What time frame are you looking at? It really depends on my son's school, and if during the summer, we have a trip to Disney World planned.
