Sheepherding classes?

Anyone hear of this and/or try it? It seems like a great idea to me! Saw it on the Dog Whisperer---wonder how to find something like that in the area?
TIA,
Stacey and Nellie(now 11 weeks!!)

PS how do I post her picture?

Yes! A few members here have tried it, I'll try and hunt down a post about it for you.

Everything you ever wanted to know about uploading pictures and thumbnails and avatars can be found here:

Of course, you'll have to tell us what "in the area" means to you... about where are you located?
Here are three threads about OES sheep hearding:

Those were great videos! We are in Michigan, a little north of Detroit. Thank you for the links, I uploaded photos and am excited to post her picture :D

We did herding with Ollie. It is a lot of fun. We initiallly went to a test/trial after friends recommended it (they do it with their Sammies). I went (one morning after working all night) and was hooked.

A bunch of us from our area decided we wanted to do classes, but there weren't any nearby. I volunteered our farm and sheep, and asked the judge at the trial if he would be interested in teaching classes. He said yes! We held classes at our place for almost 3 yrs. I learned so much. Ollie was always the only OES at events we went to :( , mostly Aussies and border collies! We had all kinds of herding and working breeds come to the classes, it was very interesting to see all the different "styles" of herding.

If you don't know about any herding in your area, I would check with people from Australian Shepherd or Border Collie groups near you. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

Where are you at? I'm in Ferndale. We should meet up! I actually contacted someone about 45 minutes away from us that does herding and was going to start Clyde but then we got Bear so we never got around to it. If you're interested, PM or e-mail me and I'll dig up her name and information.

Jill, we are in Downriver (Riverview) and would love to get info on Hearding! I played the video and Allie heard the barking and noise and came running! Barking her fool head off...If you get time, e-mail me the info you have! Thanks
Jill and Chris,

Don't know if you will get this posting but could you also forward the herding info. to us by posting it on this site. I'm sure others will also find it very helpful. We have a smooth coat collie and she may find it more fulfilling to herd sheep rather than school buses and trailers. I have a good hold on her when we come across one on a walk. We are in Washington Township backing up to Stoney Creek. Anything in the metro Detroit area will do. Thanks.
Sheep herding is simply put, the most fun and joyful activity I do with my dogs!

Here's the video of our first experience with herding, at a herding instinct test. Mady was 6 months old, she had never seen sheep, we had zero instruction, it was basically bring your dog in, let them go and see what they do! Mady had been watching the other dogs intently before her turn, but she didn't bark or pull to get to the sheep, so we had no idea what to expect when it was finally her turn. We brought her in, and GO!!

Good luck in finding a place to herd!
Stacey, if you're in Michigan and just north of Detroit, you should plan on coming down to Dayton, OH in September for the Sheep-In. It's a casual get-together for Sheepie lovers. We gather at a dog park in a small town just north of Dayton. Keep an eye out for an event specific thread in the Pay Dates section.
