Undercoat-Should it stay or should it go?

I am just starting to do more of my own grooming (the grooming bills get outrageous!) What is the difference between brushing out the undercoat and keeping it in? Also, if I wanted to brush it out how would I do that, and if I wanted to keep it in how would I do that? If this is already somewhere on this site someone could just direct me to it. Thanks

I know it's somewhere, look under "keeping dogs cool" or things like that.

In the meantime, if you want to keep the undercoat, you'll get a thicker, poofier dog but with a lot more maintenance. It's more hair to mat and more to brush but it does look beautiful.

If you want a shaggy, but thinned out version, you can strip the undercoat out, which is what I did with Clyde when his hair was long. It's less bulk and can keep them a little cooler in the summers (as cool as a fur coat can be!) and it's easier to maintain. I know you can brush it out but I've always had better luck with a stripping rake. The good ones aren't cheap but they're a worthwhile investment.

Good luck!!
It up to you and how much time you have to spend grooming!!

I have an 11 1/2 years old where the coat is long but completely stripped out of the undercoat. She takes me 2 hours once a week to groom through.

I have a 4 year old in full coat and she takes hours and hours to groom right through.

So depending on the look if you want long there is two examples. A stripping rake is what is needed to removed the undercoat if you choose that way. A mars coat king is a good and easy device for removing the undercoat and leaving the outside guard hairs so you have that long shaggy look. This rake can only be used if the dog is completely matt free otherwise you cut chunks out if you strike a knot/matt.

There is other good tools in the stripping rakes on the market and as butterstotch said investing in a good one pays off in the long term.

If you want to keep a full coat then this is a detailed link on line grooming a sheepie. Very detailed and takes you through step by step on how to do it. :D http://www.oes.org/html/sheepdog_grooming.html

Hope this helps
Thank you everyone, I think that I am going to try to do a full coat, but we'll see how long that lasts! I am so gratefull that there are so many people on this site who are willing to help. I just had a bit of a falling out with my groomer who was giving me half price on most of my grooming so I am trying to figure all this out on my own. thanks again.
