I just heard that on the news. How sad.
He was quite a character and lived a life of adventure.
I read that earlier this morning. So sad. I feel bad for his children, they are so young.
He must have been nearly on top of that stingray to have it enter his chest and pierce his heart! Yes, he leaves behind two small children.
Such a sad thing, I couldn't believe it when I heard it on the news!! And such a freak accident, according to the news it is very rare for a sting ray to cause death. I always thought the guys was nuts but such a sad thing for his family.

I also didn't realize that he was a true conservationist. According to the morning news he invested a large part of his income in perserving the wildlife in Australia.
Funny because I just came downstairs to post the same news (it's 6 a.m. my time). I'm shocked, sad, and disappointed!!!!! :( I loved that man. His poor wife. Don't think many could be married to him. hehe ...but she seemed like his perfect match. Instead of studying in college, I'd get so caught up in his shows :(
I saw this on CNN this morning and was saddened. A stingray of all things...I would've thought his demise would have been caused by an alligator instead considerin the risks he took. I wonder if environmentalists will now loby against "swimming with the stingrays" which is popular on many cruise ships. Steve did it once, I refused to go with him.
I was sad to hear this too... I mean, with what he does for a living it's not really a "shock", but it was.... if that makes any sense.

So sad for his wife and kids :(

You are kidding?????????? 8O I can't imagine anyone doing that. When I grew up stingrays were fairly common on the beach, VERY SMALL ONES would come in with the tide. Occassionally you would be stung in the foot. It was terribly painful. I cannot imagine SWIMMING with big ones 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O
Wow, I thought a Croc would turn on him.
I loved watching his show. He had so much energy and so much love for all animals.
What a horrible loss for his wife and kids! :(
Wow, what a bummer. Like Elissa said, all these years with the crocs and it's a stingray that got him. Poor guy and his family. I'm gonna miss his insanity. He always made me laugh, he was such a fruitcake.
He "knew" crocs so until he would have gotten old and slow, he was probably fairly "safe" around them, but stingrays and other exotics he wasn't around much. So knowing his wanting to get as close as possible, it's not surprising something got him. I figured it would be a poisonous snake, or some such.

Me too... So Sad.... Heard it on the news today...

It's really sad. He truly loved what he did.
I don't believe Steve was crazy, well, perhaps a little, but an extremely passionate man. He was passionate about everything he did because he loved life so much and he really loved all animals. To have loved them as much as he did made him a very special person. He was also a passionate conservationist and yes he did buy up land from his earnings.

Sounds like his little daughter may have inherited his passion for animals too but has he said in Andrew Denton's interview she is more discerning than he is/was.

I was also very saddened to hear of his death and I am sure he will be greatly missed by those who knew him and were close to him.

Rest in peace Steve.

I meant crazy in a good way, I hope that didn't come across as negative. It was clear how passionate he was and his excitement really made him do things that someone without his experience would have to be nuts to do! I always loved the one episode of the Crocodile Hunter where he was studying Komodo dragons. One slapped him really hard with its tail and left a giant bruise/welt. Steve wasn't put off by thepain, he was thrilled that it touched him and he got to get so close! There's somebody with a love for what they do.
We call crazy a Larakin here and he was :D What came out of his wild personality was awareness for animal preservation even the ones people arent thrilled about. Snakes and Crocodiles are not loved here at all. Majority of snakes in OZ are highly dangerous but have a place in the enviroment. Crocodile deaths up north happen on a regular basis but he instilled in people the need for preservation of these ancient creatures as everything has a place and are there for the enviroment. He even stopped the government doing a massive cull of the crocodiles up north in the wild.

A larakin yes but so much awareness was passed onto people with his campaigns on preservation of any animal.

The premier of Queensland invited steve to dinner to dine on crocodile and steve said "What a d---khead" that was his nature, animals of all types came first.

His Australia zoo has done so much for preservation and endangered native wildlife, I hope that continues to grow and bloom and that his wife and children keep it going. :(
Hi Butterscotch,

No I didn't think you were being negative. I just wanted to explain that his craziness, as he did appear to be, was really passion. I think there is a very thin line between the two. He was just so full of life that he could be considered crazy. :)
I certainly respect him for his passion for a cause and for all the great work he has done for conservation and saving animals. But I have to tell you I stopped watching him after he fed the croc while dangling his new born baby from his arms.

I don't know about Australia but in this country there was a fair out cry over that. But he continued to do that often. Even today when they were showing clips of him on the TV they showed several different clips of him feeding crocs with his children (at different ages) in his arms.
I could never watch him or his programs again after that.
That is such a sad thing. His personality is what drew me to watch his show. My attitude was "if you've seen one crock, you've seen em' all". But, as my husband watched his show I'd catch bits and pieces that caught my interest (mainly the humor), so I'd sit down and watch.

I have to say I'm glad I missed the episode with the baby, but it seems to me that every parent that allows their child to go into the ocean, for a walk in the woods, or even feeding the animals at the zoo are dangling them in the face of danger. Since we can't see what lurks beneath or behind.

He must have felt it was safe, but then again, we all push are luck to far at one time or another. Its unfortunate, but this time he pushed a little too far. He'll be sadly missed. :(
I posted a post after Taskers Mom post but it appears to have gone missing. daaaaa!!!
It's still hard to believe he's gone. He was so full of life!!

I was sad to hear the news of his death, especially in such a "freak" accident. Apparently, there have only been three recorded deaths due to stingrays in Australia, his being one of them. :(

I've been diving with stingrays many times, both in the wild and on the "stingray feeding" trips. They're beautiful animals and not aggressive, but the stinging impulse is a defensive reaction. They burrow in the sand when they're resting, and typically they only sting when they are stepped on or if they are hooked on a fishing line. It seems that both Steve and the stingray were surprised by the encounter and sadly the result was fatal. He was a great conservationist and ambassador for the animal world and his passing is a big loss. I feel badly for his family and his crew.

I remember when that happened and never really understood what all the hype was about. It didn't bother me that he did and didn't deter me from watching him at all.

Such a sad, tragic accident. I just hope they don't show the footage (which I'm sure will only be a matter of time before it gets out)
I was thinking the same thing about the footage not being aired. He did such great conservation work that the only purpose for airing that footage would be for ratings and sick thrills.

I wonder if his Terry will come back to the U.S. or if she'll stay there and continue their work with the zoo and the conservation efforts.
I hope she will continue the work they started together. It would be so fitting. :?
I was wondering what his wife would do too. She's been living down there for so long now, maybe that's 'home'...
He wanted his children to carry on his legacy, like he did with his father so I'll bet she'll stay down there. I was watching an interview with him yesterday an he got all choked up when he talked abut his kids being involved in saving and preserving wildlife like he and his dad did. He's one of those people whose loss affects more people than you'd even think.
I was so sad about his passing. I greatly admired his passion and exuberance and his great love of animals and his conservation efforts. Truly a life that made a difference and was well lived with gusto. I am so sad for his family and friends. What a huge loss. His wife and he seemed so perfect for each other. His children, especially his daughter appeared to be so close with him that this is soooooo sad.

Rest in Peace! You brought many a smile to many.
Its a week today exactly now, that he was pronounced dead.I think its been a real bummer of a week, nobody seems to have shaken it off yet and the newspapers are full of photos of Steve and his wife and kids, and the love radiating out off Steves face makes it hit home so hard.He adored his wife and kids,as well as his work.I think we saw him do so much stuff that most people wouldnt consider doing,we thought he was invincible.
I feel so sad for little Bob and Bindi, and Terri and Steves dad Bob.If Terri goes back to the US,he wont have any family here.
I guess at least Steve didnt die the way he most feared,in a car crash like his mum did.
I am sure had baby Bob been in any danger,Steve would have tossed him over the enclosure fence to Terri. Its true, all kids are in danger all the time, how do we draw the line?We all decide whats acceptable to us.
R.I.P Steve,as someone said in the newspaper,Steve wont be holding a grudge against that stingray.
