Back from University

We did a 16 hour drive from Toronto to Thunder Bay all in one run. We stayed for a day and a half, and and then drove back again, all in one run. Coming back we were minus a driver, so took a 2 hour nap in a parking lot at 3:00 am, as we couldn't find a hotel that was open after 11:00 PM.

It was a beautiful drive, with beautiful weather.

The area is in the Canadian Shield, which is mostly rock and coniferous forests. There were signs for several hundred miles warning to drive carefully to wathc for deer and moose. We only saw a coyote.

This shows how the rock had to be blown out in order to put the road through. We are on the Transcanada highway that runs east to west across the country.

We were going mostly north, and then west around Lake Superior. This a a picture taken last nite, Saturday evening, at around 6:00PM. It is facing direct towards the middle of Lake Superior, southwest, where Michigan would be directly across the lake....but very far away.

We got my son all settled into his dorm, and it was very weird leaving him there with a bunch of strangers. We spent lots of money at Walmart and Superstore, and unpacked his stuff with him. We were pleasantly surprised that his room came with a fridge, so he promptly sold the old one we had brought with us, to another first year resident for $35. :)

We have called and emailed him several times already  and he seems to have met quite a few girls... :?

Back on the home front the dogs are dirty but happy, and now my younger son wants to move into his older brother's bedroom.
Geez, he hasn't even been gone 4 days!

Thank you for sharing the wonderful pictures. I am originally from Michigan so it was great to get a different view of my home state. I relocated to Florida about 3 years ago.

Your son is going to do fine and the world is just starting to open up for him. It does not surprise me that he has a lot of girls hanging around already. Try to enjoy this time in your life.

Siblings are so funny. They are sad to see their brother go, but can hardly wait to move into their room. lol

Best of luck,
Helen (Mom to Violet, China and Pearl)
Wow, what a trip. The pictures are gorgeous.
We went on vacation from southern MN (flat, endless corn and soybean fields) to the north shore of Lake Superior and into Canada this summer. We have pictures like that too. It is so different from here, and beautiful. I grew up north of MPLS/St Paul, which is in between the 2 in land contour!

I laugh about your younger son wanting the recently departed (that sounds morbid) one's room. Same thing happened at our house. My oldest are twins - so 2 rooms opened up. My son picked the big room - better to fit the couch and extra bed in for those XBOX sessions with lots of friends!
Gald everyone is safe and settled in!
Welcome back! :)

Glad you had a safe trip, and the pics are gorgeous :)
Welcome back!!! It's always a bit traumatic to take a child to college!! I may have told this story before but when my son went away to college he was 950 miles away and I knew I wouldn't see him til Christmas, it was awful!!!! During the first week he was gone I woke up after dreaming I had forgottem what he looked like, I had to get out of bed and go find a picture of him to reassure myself that I hadn't!!!! Now I keep a picture of both kids on the wall at the foot of my bed so I can say goodnight to them every night.

Keep busy and do somehting special for yourself. The first one is the hardest!
Lovely photos and looks like a great road trip. Glad your home safe with all those miles you travelled. :D

We took my youngest to the airport yesterday so sniff sniff  Rang him last night and he is settled into the dorm, mostly rang to see if he got off the plane OK and got to the University LOL.

Only gone since yesterday and I miss him already. :?

Wish we could of drove him there but impossible as bass strait is in the way, he is down in Tasmania.

Now the big question nicole, how is your phone bill going to be over the next few months, mine will be enormous. LOL
Welcome back! Ginny's right - the first one is the hardest. But soon enough you get used to less laundry, less cleaning! And he'll be home for break before you know it!

We have a long distance plan...free calls evening and weekends.. :cheer:

We went out to get him a couple things, yesterday, and when I came back I washed up a couple dishes for him that we'd bought. Well, heaven forbid that I got some water drops on the sink. He wiped up after me with a huff!!!

Upon a close look I noticed some whiskers where he had shaved and actually cleaned the sink! :excited:

And today he tells us he just did his first load of laundry...Yaaahhhh! There is hope, yet! :yay:
HA HA HA that is great I am hoping my son will learn too.

He has not got to doing his own laundry yet, soooo that will be interesting when the clothes run out 8O He thinks it will be room service, I said no you will probably find it will be a communal laundry on the campus and you will have to do it yourself, we shall see who is right there HA HA.

Packed an enormous case for him so clothes to last awhile till he has to wash. Hope he does not come home with months of dirty clothes or even worse multi coloured clothes from washing all together. LOL

Hoping Jarod will wash the whiskers out of the sink too, that is one thing I will not miss
My daughter always came home with HER dirty clothes AND her boy friends
