Grandma's on her way to the ER

So I am waiting here to find out if I should make the 220 mile drive (round trip) to the hospital tonight. She was having very painful chest pains.
My sister said she was yelling with pain. They were supposed to take her to the local hospital which is about 1/2 a mile from where she lives. But there ER is not taking people so she is being sent to a hospital approx 20 miles from there.
My sister said she would call as soon as they got to the hospital which won't be for about 25 minutes. I will be putting the kids to bed in 1/2 hr and Billy is here, so I could go.... My Mom said to wait until they see how she is.
I am a nervous wreck!!!

OH NO!

I hope it is not serious.... :( :( :(

Keep us up-to-date!
Oh no. Is this the 90-some year old grandma?
I hope all is ok... Got my fingers crossed for you both.
Thanks guys,
I will update. I hope it's not too serious also, but at her age it is probably serious and she hasn't been doing well recently.
Jill, yes she's 93.
I hope it's not serious and that everything is ok....
Hope all is ok. Prayers are with you and your family tonight.
Praying your grandma will be fine, and for the comfort of your family.

Drive SAFELY!
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. :)
I am still at home...
Mom and Sis are with Grandma. The Dr had already seen Grandma before my Mom and Sis were allowed in there.
Mom was waiting for the Dr to come back and talk to them.
Then they are calling me back.
The paramedics put on her chart that she was having shingle related pain in her back. Even though her caregiver and my sister both told them she was having chest pains. So they gave her morphine. Her vitals are ok. They are now looking into the chest pain. They were supposed to call Mom back while the Dr talked to Grandma who is very out of it and needs my Mom there. They never did.
Mom told me to go to bed and she would call me in the morning.
Hope everything is okay, Elissa. Saying a little prayer for her.
Hope all is going to be OK for your gran elissa, such a worry at that age :(
That's terrible sounding pain.
hope she's okay, elissa...
i knew an elderly person who had shingles and I know it can be very painful. poor grandma...
I hope things have settled down a bit today, Elissa.
Keep up post Elissa. The up side is that even if it was Cardiac pain and not pain from the shingles the morphone would be helpful.
Thanks everyone!
Ginny thanks for the info about the morphine.
My Mom and Sis didn't get home until about 3am.
Grandma is still in the ER. They did all sorts of testing.
Grandma's caregiver is there with her right now and waiting to talk to the Dr. Mom said they might even release her.
She is going to call me back soon.
Hope shes ok...

Sending you ((((hugs)))
Kim & Maizie
My Grandmother's regular Dr was there in the hospital today.
He said they sure screwed up last night because of what the paramedics wrote. They had her for 3 hrs before they realized she was having chest pain. He couldn't believe they were about to send her home.
She just got a diagnosis of having a Pulmonary embolism.
My Sister said it's like a blood clot on the lungs. They put her on blood thinners and will keep her in the hospital for a few days. I just talked to her on the phone. She sounded pretty weak, but said she was feeling better than she did last night.
Too bad they didn't get her on blood thinners sooner!!!!!! Wonder where they got the "mis" information from!!!!!!!!!! Makes you wonder doesn't it!

I hope she is better SOON!!!!
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Elissa. I hope your grandma feels better soon.

We are trying to figure out why they didn't have chest pain written down. My sister was there when the paramedics were there. She and the caregiver both told them that she was having chest pains. The Caregiver might have mentioned that she has Shingles, but this was definitely chest pain and not pain in her back which is her normal shingle pain.
Ginny, could she have died if they sent her home without treatment?

If she had been released from that hospital they were going to take her to her normal hospital which is a much better hospital than the one she was at.
Thanks Chris :)
Thoughts and prayers are much appreciated.
Elissa, I guess it depends on the size of the clot and how much difficulty breathing she was having, She had to have been in alot of discomfort though so in that case I'd say the morphine was a good thing. I blame the hospital as much as anything, you never believe what's written on a prehospital report without verifying it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never believe the darn ambulance people.
glad she's feeling a bit better and that they at least figured out what it was. I hope she continues to improve!

CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At least they have her on the right meds now and her own doctor was able to see her... I hope her body continues to heal and she is on a quick road to recovery!! Prayers and thoughts to all of you!
Thanks for the support everyone :)
Hayley and I are going to see her in the hospital tomorrow.
Ryan didn't want to go with me today so tomorrow is his first day of school and he will be gone until 4pm. So we are leaving early in the morning right after his bus leaves.
Mom said she was out of it all evening and that someone was with her until she took a sleeping pill and fell asleep. She didn't know where she was. She had no idea why she was there.
Hopefully we can sneak Hayley in to see her. Hayley always brightens Grandma's day.
I agree with Ginny on this one. There are exceptions, but I'll be forever grateful to those that cared for me and my family when we needed them.

Of course, I might add my son is a paramedic, and since he works for the fire department, he's also a alternating fireman, so as Ginny says: CAREFUL!!!!!!!!

Glad they got the correct diagnosis for your grandma. Hope she's fine and back home soon.
Hope your Gran continues to improve. Thinking of you all
E, Just catching up on posts....how is your grandmother today...my prayers are with you guys, and I know a visit with Hayley can only make her feel better!
Yes, how are things today?

Thinking of you, and sending get well thoughts.
I just got home from my visit.
I wouldn't say she's doing good. She is still in a lot of pain. :(
I was there for an hour before she woke up. Finally she said to my Mom that that baby looks like Hayley. It was Hayley. :? She was mumbling a lot and was not able to say what she was trying to say. She couldn't think of the words. The only thing she didn't seem to have a problem saying was when I was leaving I told her to feel better before I left and she said, "Thank you Honey!" She must be on some happy pills because she has never referred to me as Honey. 8O
She was up all night last night despite being given the sleeping pill.
I think she woke up about 1/2 after her caregiver left for the night. She moaned and complained all night driving the other woman in the room crazy. She didn't know where she was....etc...
So tonight her Weekend caregiver will stay with her in the hospital and until she comes home. They are going to keep her there at least for a few more days.
I'm sorry she is in a lot of pain. :( My thoughts are still with her.
I hope she starts to feel better. Being hospitalized is hard on the elderly. Between being sick/in pain, they just don't adapt well to all the stressors to their system. Then throw in the pain meds, all the tests, the different staff coming and going constantly.... you get the picture!
It will help the most if the caregivers she is used to are there with her as much as possible. It will help ground her and keep her from getting more confused.
Being a hospital nurse on the night shift (7p-7a) I see LOTS of confusion. Luckily, it does usually improve after discharge and getting back to a more normal routine.
Hang in there!
Things are not looking good. :(
She is being sent home and they are talking to a hospice nurse
She stopped eating yesterday.
She has been asking to see Hayley and I have been bedridden since early yesterday morning with a bad stomach virus. I finally was able to make it to the computer just now.
Needless to say I cannot make a trip to see her in this condition.
I don't think I could walk out to the car if I tried.
I was so sick yesterday that I called Billy at 7am, he was already at work.
I told him he needed to come home now because I couldn't take care of Hayley !! It took him an hour and a half to get home. By that time he got home I was in bed. Hayley was basically roaming around my bedroom. I couldn't see straight...had the chills and sweats.
Today my back and ribs hurt from being bent over a toilet way too many times yesterday and this morning.
Billy could not stay home again today. So Dad came to take care of me :) and Hayley.
Mom said I better hurry up and get better and go see Grandma.
My Uncle is flying in from NJ on Sunday.
I hope you feel better qucikly, Elise.

I hope both you and your uncle are able to spend some time with Grandma.
Thanks Ron.
I hope she can make it until my Uncle (her son) comes.
Ditto, thinking of you all, such a grand age is your gran, you are all in my thoughts & prayers. I lost my gran at 91 a few years ago, so I know how hard all this is at the moment, especially when they get ill at that age.

xxLisa
My husband, my sister and I went to see my grandma. Family was there, she was alert, but spoke softly. I whispered goodbye into her ear, telling her I loved her and would miss her.

We had to leave, but late that night I called the hospital to get permission to come sit with her. So the 3 of us went back around 11p.m.

They moved her into a private room before we got there so we could stay as long as we wanted. We sat on the bed talking to her throughout the night. She was unable to respond except through a few slight squeezes of the hand.

We told her we knew she was going to die and that it was ok for her to go. I told her, "You know Granny, we're gonna miss you and I know you'll miss us too, but its ok. Go be with Grandpa, Mom, Dad, your sons, sisters and brothers. Go be with the ones your heart aches for, we'll be there someday".

We talked, bringing back memories of times and things we knew were special to her, and us. We talked about fishing, her cooking, the stories she and Grandpa told us when we were little. We laughed and cried all night with her hand in ours.

Her lips were soooooo very dry. We wet a washcloth and barely sprinkled water onto her lips, and into her mouth and God blessed us with the most beautiful smile we'd ever seen. She said everything she wanted to say through that smile, especially that she was thirsty.

We had to leave to take care of the dogs. We told her we'd be back but if she couldn't hold on until then that it was ok. As we were leaving the room she called out my mom's name, whom had preceded her in death.

The nurse called me 10 minutes after I got home and told me she was gone. But, it was ok. It was sunup, and oh what a beautiful sunrise it was.

I tell you all this to say, Say Goodbye. People try to hang on to this world for us, and themselves. But, it makes it so much easier for them to know "it's ok". Especially when they're this age, they have so much more waiting for them on the other side. The people of their past are within reach now, all they have to do is reach back to them. And, saying goodbye is such a comforting part of the healing process for those of us left behind.

Your in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless and comfort you all.
I am sorry Elissa, :(
I'm sorry for your loss. Yes, never miss the opportunity to tell the ones you love that you do love them. For we never know the time and place when we will be parted. It can be sudden or with warning as with your grandmother.

Hugs to you, Elissa. Hope you feel better real soon.
Hope you're feeling better today, Elissa, and can make it up to see your Gran.
Thanks Everyone!
Pam, Thanks for sharing the story of your Grandmother.
Sounds like you gave her a wonderful goodbye. :)

My Sister called last night to tell me that Grandma, who has not been making sense and has just been mumbling woke up Wednesday night 3 times calling for Hayley. And her speech was very clear when she said it.

I am still too sick to make the drive today. My stomach pain is so bad that I cannot handle driving. Actually I don't even think I'd be able to pick Hayley up to get her in the car.
Billy is throwing a BBQ for Labor Day tomorrow. Obviously my family won't be making it out here. But if I feel any better I will skip the BBQ and go to see Grandma.
Mom keeps saying the only reason Grandma is still alive is Hayley, I really have to get her down there to see her Bubbe (Yiddish for Grandma).
Elissa, I hope you feel better soon!
Thanks Sue. This is really the worst time for me to be sick. :(
I need to get better so I can see my Grandmother.
E, I feel for you...I think I have the same thing! It feels like there is a rock in my guts....and the toilet is my new best friend. :?
Darcy,
I hope you don't have it. This is the worst I have been sick in years.
I stayed home from work day before yesterday..sue was supposed to come over but had to cancel...i went from the bed to the sofa to the bathroom etc all day...yesterday, i felt a little better, but this morning i feel like hell all over again...good news is that I have lost 3 1/2 lbs in 2 days!
I don't own a scale. I think they are EVIL
But I know I also lost weight.
I hope you both feel better soon.... and I hope you are able to go see your Grandma soon Elissa.
Thanks

A lot of people's health seems to improve just before death.......
I hope you can get Hayley there, to put grandma's mind at ease. She wants to say goodbye to her. She knows shes a child and doesn't want her feeling that Bubbe abandoned her. jmop

I pray God's will be done, but that you might possibly have the opportunity to spend more time together, with her in good health.
Thanks Pam, I don't think she will get any better though.
She has stopped all of her medications.
She has also stopped eating. I told my Mom that she needs to get her to eat. She said if Grandma doesn't want to eat she doesn't have to.
Her quality of life has gone way down hill in the past year.
She looked like she enjoyed that cake on her 93rd!
Best wishes Elissa sorry you are ill, I hope you get to see your gran with Hayley, that would be so special for your gran :hearts:

Not sounding too good and that seems to be the way too, unfortunately that is how my gran went as well, stopped eating, her memory was slightly better in the end and we had a fight with the doctors to stop medicating her so she could go in peace and harmony surrounded by family.

Love to you all, it is never easy but part of life that we have to experience. :(
Ron wrote:

She certainly did Ron! She always had a thing for Chocolate.

Lisa, My other Grandmother went the same way.
She waited until Ryan and I moved to California and she was able to see him walk for the first time (He was 3 1/2 yrs old). Then she stopped eating and talking. I moved in early November and she passed away in the end of November.

I am still in a lot of pain. My diaphram, stomach and abdomen and back feel like someone performed surgery on me without my knowledge. I do feel a bit better today. I don't know if I'll be able to drive though. I just applied Mineral Ice throughout my entire mid section. Maybe that will help enough so I'll be able to drive.
