What would you Do???

What would you do if you were in this situation?

Everynight a group of us meet at the dog park, rain or shine, sleet or snow. Recently an older couple started coming to the park.. this couple is approximately late 60's early 70's..with 9 month old pure female German Sheppard. Every time they come to the park they stay at the other end of the field.. their puppy is barking and jumping in an excitable manner because it wants to play with the other dogs there... when she does this, they will whip her with a rope till it yelps...... a few of us have tried to talk to them about this in a friendly manner.. "you should let her socialize with the other dogs.. you should let her run and play, etc... they refuse to do this because they say she is "nervous" around other dogs.. Lately, when they arrive, I have to leave.. I cannot stand to watch them do this to this puppy.

Here is my persoanl dilemma... this whipping goes against every fibre of my being.. I think to myself.. it they mistreat this dog publicly.. how do they treat her at home. Anyway.. I know the breeders where they got this puppy.. the breeders are decent people.. they own a very popular pet store, they are very active with our local SPCA, they raise and breed champion Sheppards, have a very well respected boarding kennel and run training seminars....we even used to ride at the same stable a few years ago...

If you were me.. would you call the breeder and report what I have witnessed on several occasions.

Without a second thought.
Without hesitation.
Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!! Without hesitation. There is a huge difference between a difference in training techinique and cruelty. If they are whipping the dog they are being cruel.

I guess what I wonder is why are they bothering to bring the dog to a DOG PARK if they don't want him so be socialized???????????????????????
First thing tomorrow I am going to call them and report to them what I have witnessed...

I will keep you all posted.
yes, definitely yes...right now.
I would call!
Call the breeder right away :!: :!:
Okay.. I called the breeder.. and she was horrified.... horrified...she knew exactly who I was talking about..they go to her classes on Wednesday night...she was going to get in touch with them right away.

She was very very thankful that I called.. I told her that all of us that witness this would verify what I said.

Maybe I just saved a dog a life time of abuse.. I feel very proud of myself.

And so you should!

Cruelty to animals is everybody's business, yet so many people just don't bother to get involved. :(

Kudos to you! :high5: :high5: :high5: :high5:
I agree with Nicole.
Thank you for getting involved! :clappurple:
:clappurple:

Keep us posted if you hear any more!

Good for you... I'm so glad you called.....
I'm so glad you called too. Hopefully the pup will find new owners.
I would have invited them to witness it themselves without the puppy
owners knowing it. If the breeder could have seen it for herself without
the owners knowing it, it wouldn't matter what excuse the owners give
or even if they deny it.
But you did something, which is more than most people do.
It's not ok to sit back when a wrong is being done to someone.
Especially someone with no power, like a child or a pet.
Good for you!

Shellie
I'm so glad that you trusted your gut and called. That poor dog :(
You absolutely did the right thing!!! Please keep us informed of the latest.
You did the right thing. :high5:

I can only imagine the future that dog would have had to endure. :( Hopefully the breeder can rectify the situation.
Perhaps they just need education and can keep the puppy.
Good for you. Hopefully she'll give them a lesson in how to treat a puppy that they'll follow & be able to keep their little one.
The breeder was going to call the couple last night.. I am going to touch base with her (at her suggestion) and see what happened. The breeder did indicate to me that they attend her Wednesday night obedience class with their puppy.. I say puppy but she is 9-10 months old.

I have been racking my brain trying to figure out why a couple of this age would want a dog of this size.. protection???? they can barely handle the dog now (energy level, strength, size), I did express this to the breeder last night.. I'm not saying that elderly peple shouldn't have puppies.. but it is quite obvious that they have a hard time controlling her.. maybe that is why they think it is okay to whip her with the rope, their only way of controlling her in their opinion... anyhow.. I will follow up with the breeder..and see what becomes of this..

My parents have always had big dogs (mostly sheepies). They now have a 9 year old sheepie and plan to get another when she passes. They will most likely be in their mid to upper 60s when that happens. There is no way my parents would consider a small dog just because they will be older---they like big dogs for a reason.

So it could be that this older couple has always had bigger dogs and are finding it harder than they anticipated to control now that they are older (NOT in any way advocating what they are doing to it, just wondering if that's the reason they have the big dog).

BTW, good job on calling for help on the situation!
Good for you, thank you so much for doing the right thing.
Good job, you did the right thing.
You did the right thing, I hope things get solved in the best way for everyone.
