New and looking to buy a OES for our family

Hi... We are looking to buy an OES for our family (we have a 4 year old).

We have contacted the breeders that the association in our state (we live in Australia) gave us details for and I have chosen a breeder that I feel comfortable developing a relationship with (mostly based on her being so up front and inviting to spend time with her and her dogs). She will soon be breeding her bitch and I just wanted to get some information on what we should look for and questions to ask.

She has invited our family to come and meet her dogs, and she has sent us pictures.. they are so beautiful :D Are there any things we should look for?

We want to make sure that we get a dog that fits our family well... we walk every afternoon, live near dog-friendly off leash areas and are looking to buy acreage in the next few years.. but most importantly we want a breed that will suit a family with a child... she is really great with other people's dogs and isn't rough.

I look forward to gaining some knowledge (and a puppy :clappurple: )
Thanks for your help.

Hi Mariana, I am from Melbourne, Australia.

Things to ask the breeder, have both parents been health screened, that is Hips checked for HD and have they been eye examined. Ask to view these documents, it is not compulsory here but any responsible breeder of OES here do the right thing and have these clearances done before breeding. Also ask to see the registration/pedigree papers of both mum and dad too when seeking or checking out a litter.

Also looking at any litter when the time comes, ask to see mum and if possible the father as checking out temperament is important too.

Do your homework and it will pay off with a healthy and happy puppy.

Wishing you all the best in your search for an OES :D

Welcome to the forum, you will also find this a wonderful place to learn too all the good aspects and not so good when it comes to owning a sheepie.
Thanks for your speedy reply :D

I was also wondering about the coat and the heat here in Brisbane.. I was reading that their coats insulate them against heat and cold.. but is it best to keep them fairly well cropped in our 30-40 degree weather times?
We get the same heat here in Melbourne in the Summer, my girls are in full coat, but we do have airconditioning 8) In summer they are exercised in the cool of the morning or after the sun goes down.

Coated in full coat or clipped off really does not matter as long as in the hot weather they are not left outside in the heat of the day.

If the OES is going to be a pet, probably better and easier to maintain if the coat is short, a nice fluffy puppy clip, especially if this is going to be your first sheepie. The coats take an awful lot of work and time
Welcome to the forum Marianna! :)

I had heard OES were hard to find in Australia, that's great to hear you have found a breeder you seem to like so far. Don't be afraid to ask them lots of questions to make sure you are comfortable in every aspect.
Welcome! You'll have to keep your eyes open for me - a littermate of my puppy is going to Australia to live when she's old enough!

I agree whole-heartedly with checking health screenings. It's so important to promote a healthy litter as well as come home with a healthy pup.

Have fun!

:D
Welcome to the forum. Some of Harry's bloodline comes from a breeder in Australia - his sire's side. Good luck to you.
