The detailed rituals we go through just to get a potty

I was out walking, cycling the dogs through for potty walks this evening. And it came to me that I have certain things I do and certain things THEY do. And they do different things for Carl...lol. Only on THIS forum would it occur to me to post these eccentricities.

MARTIN: This good natured teddy bear is a nut! He will usually go the entire walk with Carl without a pee until he is traveling toward home then he MIGHT go pee....For me he will go almost immediately. As for the poop....I call him the 80 plops around the world, his record is 13. All in a big circle...this can be a real problem when walking two dogs or at night when I forget the light!

VIRGIL: This guy is more predictable. He's off the step and if you don't quick step him (and even then it's not a given) he will plant his feet and wiz in the yard...and there is NO moving the Virgil mountain when he's a goin'. For pooping he will always do a two-parter....but at least he stays in one place.

DAWN: is Virgil's carbon copy...except......she goes on command....YEAH! Don't you just want one of your own? lol But here's the kicker.....she will only do this for me...and if I'm out walking anyone else..and Carl brings her out....she's gonna make sure she is walked by momma...doesn't matter the obstacles she might have to overcome (this can include people or objects). When Dawn is asked to go poo...she will always use me as a May pole....around and around then stop and do the business. When we were first working this ritual out I made the mistake of following her around..twirling with her....not good...not only was I ditzy I was then dizzy.

The afghans mostly go on command too. I'm the one that walks them 99% of the time. We have to go through a begging chant...butt down, knees out tail up, do the poop! They also will do the side by side double pee pees...then they switch and pee on each other's previous sites. We call it...."I now claim this in the name of the queen or king" depending on who has done what where. Brigham's record is 17 marking pees! before he ran out of juice.

There are other hazards that can and do happen.
The side by side double poo poos can be a challenge especially when one of the goers is a mover ie. Dawn or Martin. I call this the pretzel move....usually accompanied by "Mom is not a pretzel and you are not gonna make her one!" There is also straight jacket move....when both dogs go in a circle in the opposite direction faster than I can change hands. And the macrame move ...where one dog moves as so to knot the leads together in a decorative fashion. I have been known to lose my mind and walk THREE dogs at a time. That can lead to the braiding move...and since we are in Quebec we can now call it the French braiding move. Makes for a lovely mesh of leads but also leads to the dogs welded together side by side. Virgil and Martin also have a special move reserved just for Carl....the Stretch Armstrong move....where they both decide to go potty in opposite directions leaving Carl to stretch his arms out as far as they will/can/might go without dislocating his shoulders and thats not a certainy either.

I'm sure I can think of other things....I often wonder what my poor neighbors think when I'm talking to the dogs while walking....because usually I'll make up a potty song personalized for whoever I'm walking at the time. If the men in white coats come to take me away I know that they'd never get me....the dogs won't go potty without the "entertainment committee". Oh, and when we get all the dogs to go...we call it a BINGO.

I guess I have to say that YES we carry potty bags (pet peeve) and faithfully pick up after ourselves...and sometimes others!...and all the dogs know that grass is NOT a suitable potty zone (of course no one in our new subdivision has grass yet).

So to what lengths will and do you go just for that bag of brown gold?

LOL Your post made me laugh...

This is one of those "You know you're a dog person when..." moments.

My husband and I both can tell the difference in each dog's poop based on how they "present" it.
Sky's is always standing on end, Dancer's is a little neat pile (prim and proper like her), and Panda leaves large gifts in a big circle. I'm not sure how she manages to not step on them, but I'm glad.
They all pee on command, but Dancer still won't pee in the rain. LOL
LOL!

Muffy (my sheepie growing up) never liked anyone watching her poop - she'd get a funny look on her face and turn her back on you. But the funninest thing was "wetting" before going "bye-bye" (her favorite thing). She was in such a hurry to go that if you tried to tell her to "wet" she would squat and FAKE it. Of course, I knew nothing came out so I would tell her "No, you go wet" and then reluctantly she would go. But she would always try to get away with the fake squat when she wanted to go in the car.

Mopsy never went to the bathroom during a walk. She would always wait until she got home. She didn't like the "public bathroom".

Harry spreads his charm around for everyone to enjoy.
Dancer will fake pee too.....LOL
Panda goes potty (both) on command for me..but not Brian. She doesnt like to face you when going poop (I think she likes to show you what she is doing.) She doesnt go potty at all on the leash, which can be difficult when traveling. She is also known for the fake pee.... :D
Ok, I have to say it... one of my little pet peeves.... WHY do some people refer to it as "potty"???!!!!
Well Stace...what do you say....go to the bathroom..do your business? Seems too long....potty is quick...I also say pee and poop though..
Michelle, LOL! You're right, only here in the Forum would you be able to share that story with people who enjoy and appreciate it.

I wish I knew more about training when Bailey was a puppy - we are the cause of all his bad habits. He doesn't go on command, and he poops all over the yard. If I were smarter I would have trained him to poop in a place that I (and guests) can't see from the back patio LOL! He's also a traveller - once he starts a poop he moves in a circle until I'm afraid he's going to step in it, but never does.

Until recently he would only pee in familiar paces - our yard, his dogsitter's yard, Darcy's yard. He would hold it FOREVER until we got back to a safe zone. His record was 12 hours, when we drove home from Vegas. Fortunately he's getting over that as he gets older.

I just tell them to hurry up and go pee, or poop. LOL
Then I guess you wouldn't like my song..."It's Howdy Potty time...It's Howdy Potty time...." If you know it then sing along!...lol...or does that just date me...oh well...old and silly...yep that's me!
Its not any worse than me singing..."In the jungle, the mighty jungle....." to Panda ALL of the time...I guess you could say that its our song 8O
The closest thing we have to ritual is when I frantically whisper "Hurry up, I forgot bags and we gotta get out of here before the neighbors see us!"

Don't worry, I go back but you know no one will believe me if they catch me-- I'll just get yelled at.
At our house they potty on command.

In regard to the language: at our house pee is pee, poop is poop and potty is BOTH!

When we go out it's "go potty". If they poop, they get told to pee. Vice versa for if they pee 1st. I guess it's just what works!! :D
You guys crack me up .... lmao....

Jake and Mulligan were very different.

With Jake is was go on command.

With Mulligan it is also go on command... except we don't know which command to give him. We tell him to go pee, and he goes and sniffs. We tell him to go potty, and he might go pee. He seems to go potty when I say, "OK, let's go home!"

I sing "Little Scruffy Foo Foo hoping through the forest, scooping up the field mice and bopping them on the head." all the time. She just sits there and stares at her very strange mom.
We're hoping Bingley learns to go on command but the three fosters we have had have all been different. Prissy would ALWAYS walk while pooping - like a horse in the show ring. Mopsey always pooped in a neat pile. Mickey would circle 3 times before going. I love their quirks!!!
OK, I'm not crazy!!!!! I thought I was weird because I noticed that Mojo leaves 3 presents each time and then runs away. Handy information when we are on a walk.
O I AM LAUGHING SO HARD.. CODY HAS NOW FOUND A FPREVER HOME BUT HE WOULD GO POO AND TURN IN A CIRCLE AND HE DID STEP IN IT ON A FEW OCCASIONS...STRAIGHT TO THE BATH FOR HIM. oLIVE WILL NOT GO ON COMAND IN FACT SHE WILL GO ANYWHERE SHE DARN WELL WANTS TOO ( WE ARE WORKING ON THAT) AND I MUST HAVE BAGS AT ALL TIMES.. :? SHE PEES IN LITTLE SPURTS AND WHEN EXCITED SHE PEES. I SING TO HER I WANT THAT DOGGIE IN THE WINNDOW AND SHE KNOWS IT IS TIME TO PLAY AND THEN WE PLAY HIDE AND SEEK IN THE HOUSE. ITS VERY FUNNY AND SHE LOVES THE GAME :P

OMG, I didn't think anyone else knew that song! LOL

I always thought it was "Little bunny foo foo hopping through the forest, catching all the field mice n boppin em on the head"

LOL

It is....in Canada!

Dixie goes to the end of the yard, or the furthest corner at the dog park and does her thing. Not a big deal about it.

Bosley on the other hand   goes poo anytime he is excited somewhere....like as soon as we reach the dog park....or out on the sidewalk for a walk...or the parking lot at the car show.....or at the Michigan picnic.....He scruches up and drops it while he walks a bit...then jogs off without looking back....

He has to find the exact right place to pee, however, sniffs, and circles etc. He will pee on cue, but it has to be the right place. And now at night he is afraid of the dark backyard, so I need to go outside with him and tell him to go. NOT looking forward to winter, but he sulks outside, and seems nervous, and looks all around, and is ready to spook at any sound. Makes it hard for him to get comfortable enough to pee, as it has to be the right place for him....that and the fact that our lawn is getting long and he has started to take up "grazing" while he is searching for the spot....

Only this forum would understand what we go through and why...
Bosley's Mom was talking about the dog being afraid of the dark, brought back the memories of when my dogs would not go outside in the dark unless I went outside and stood there waiting for them. Mind you I have a doggy door and the reason I have one is so I did not have to go out and stand in the dark. lol. Oh well, they have out grown that, thank God.

Helen (Violet, China & Pearl's Mom)
Rags like to spread out the poops. Two here, two there, two more over there. She is a BIG pooper.
Pepsi also walks but, not like Rags...only about two piles for him and his and much smaller.
Pepsi will pee on command. From the moment he arrived here I used the same method I had used for Peanut. As soon as he would start to go I would say Good Potties!! Then he eventually learned what potties meant.
Rags always pees on top of where Pepsi pees so as long as he goes she will go.

Great topic Michelle, it definitely got a laugh out of me.
Nicole,

You reminded me that Farouk loves grass! There is NO grass in our neighborhood yet...but when Farouk gets to greens...he grazes. I always tell him "you are not a ruminate" or " the name Farouk does not mean COW"

Also I have to tell you of the time we went to let the dogs run in a big field. Let the big boys and Dawn out and Jeff realized he had to poop right NOW...but he so wanted to run after the others. He was dancing and pooping at the same time...I swear the poop hadn't completely exited before he was off giving chase. You could almost hear ....gotta poop...gotta run...gotta poop...NO gotta run!!!

It is little bunny foo foo, but every time I sing to her I have to put her name in the song. So I sing little Scruffy foo foo.
13 PLOPS!!!!!!!!!!! IMPRESSIVE 8O 8O 8O

Tasker's style is walk a little pee a little walk a little pee a little......... He also does the roveing poop........... never stands still to poop but has to walk in a circle.
:o O'! olive does that walks and pees. she kind of does this waddle thing and it is so funny. it looks like she is crawling through a war zone and thinking " take cover" i laugh when she does it. :D as for the dark she is spooked easily too, we have bunny rabbits all through the neighborhood and on hopped by while she was sniffing. my god i thought she would jump out of her skin she jumped so high and then ran to the back door kind of crying . she shivered for a few min. and then calmeds down. who ever heard of a dog that is scared of a rabbit. ooo big bad evil rabit

O Bosley won't be her night and shining armor the fight the evil rabits...why i am i thinking that movie watership down? o because evil rabbits do exsist and olive is trying to tell us all something  i bet Bosley know the secret too huh?
I thought I was the only one who had a poop while walking dog..lol. Morgan never stays in one place and poops, she walks and drops. I thought that was so weird, never had a dog that did that before. Bad part of that is once on vacation at my moms in the Poconos. Morgan must have gotten somthing in the garbage and got diarrea all over my moms baby blue carpet. Due to the fact that she cant stay in one place while pooping it was ALL over. Lots of resolve for that one!
