Barkley is Home

Hi Everyone!

Last time I posted we still weren't 100% certain we were getting our first pick. Well, we got him. Barkley (Lord Barkington of Westminster) has been home with us for just over a week. Now that I'm back to work and have internet access again, I'll be posting more pics soon.

What a great week we had!

He has been amazing in his crate ever since he made it through the first difficult night. Last night after going to bed at 11pm Craig had to actually wake him up at 6am to go potty.... which he did immediately and then went straight back to sleep. Barkley is such a good sleeper and he hasn't once had a nightime accident. He even let me sleep in until 10 on Saturday (oops!).

Okay now I'm bragging. He's been such an amazing boy. I hope he does okay now that I'm back at work. I did keep him crated for a couple hours at a time even when I was home so he would get used to it. He barely whines at all in the crate (maybe for 30 secs sometimes) and then he's happy to just sleep.... unfortunately he enjoys sleeping in his water dish.

Playtime is lots of fun. He has a large stuffed walrus that he likes to hump.... he puts that walrus in his place in the pack! He likes to chew on everything so we have to watch him constantly to make sure he learns what is okay to chew and what not to chew. He loves to play with his soccer ball, which he will actually guard by standing with the soccer ball under his tummy.

He's a big boy! On Thursday (August 3rd) when he went in for his 1st puppy shots he weighed 16.8 lbs. and when he went in on August 4th for his microchip, he'd gained half a pound in a day! Now a week and a half later I'm sure he's between 20-25lbs.

More pics to be posted as soon as I'm able.

Yea! I can't wait for more stories and pictures!
Yay!
Barkley's finally home! What a good boy not tiring his parents out the first few nights!! OMG he sounds soo adorable. I wanna see him guard that soccer ball!

Can't wait to see pictures!
Wow he's so adorable and big, at almost 11 weeks Piper only looks slightly bigger than Barkley at 6 weeks! So sweet, I love the mask on his face!
Thanks everyone! I think he's a big boy but I have no frame of reference except for pictures of your babies.

When our breeder was showing us all his paperwork and shots records I asked if 17 lbs (recorded by the vet at almost 8 weeks) was big and she replied "he's a monster!".... so I guess he is big.

I've changed my avatar to a pic of Barkley at 8 1/2 weeks and I've uploaded a bunch of pictures which will can be viewed on the camera button as soon as they're approved.

I don't yet have a picture of him guarding his soccer ball, but I'll be sure to get one asap.
THAT IS ONE CUTE PUPPERS... OMG...... you could just kiss his face off.......
He is adorable! Congratulations. I love the picture of him looking out the window.
Barkley is one gorgeous boy, absolutely love his double patches. :D

Congratulations on your new edition, he is one cute pupper.
Barkley is absolutly adorable. He really makes me want to get a puppy, but I will control myself. lol Best of luck with your adorable fluff ball. I'll be looking forward to hearing about his antics.

Congradulations,
helen (Violet, China & Pearl's Mom)
Barkley looks lovely and what a heavyweight! Teddy E is 8 weeks tomorrow and I have just weighed him at 13lbs we go for our first shots tomorrow. How are you coping with sharp teeth...ouch!

He is a big boy! It's already getting difficult for me to carry him down the stairs for his middle-of-night potty break.

Barkley hasn't given me a single puncture mark so far. I'm yelping whenever he nips to teach him that it hurts (even when it doesn't hurt). Those puppy teeth are sharp! He's got more coming in still too, so he chews on everything, especially us. I think we're his favourite toys. Craig has had the skin broken a couple times, but he plays a little rougher with Barkley and isn't as quick to yelp as I am. Barkley must think I'm a total wuss.

YAY - congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D I'm so happy for you! I completely understand the chewing thing - Bingley is chewing everything in sight - especially us!!!!! 8O We're working on re-directing and probably not as much yelping as we should be doing! Your boy sleeps sooooo well! We've been setting the alarm with Bingley at night - but after reading your post I'm wondering if we should! Congrats on your boy!
Mop Lover,

Oh I think you should definitely keep setting the alarm for Bingley. We certainly need to for Barkley. He's such a good sleeper, if we don't set the alarm and wake him up for a pee break, he would actually wet the crate in his sleep (he's done that during the day before).

At this point he can consistently make it from 11pm to 4:30am but sometimes he wasn't needing to go at 4:30 (like the one night he made it to 6am). I think we'll push it back to 5am soon.

The trick is, we take away his water between 9 and 9:30 pm. But then so he doesn't get dehydrated his bedtime treat is a Kong filled with water and kibble (that swells) with a little bit of cheese that we freeze (keeps him occupied until he falls asleep and slow-releases water for him) and peanut butter to top it off.

Bingley is so cute! I love the new pictures you posted of him yesterday. He looks like he's a big boy too!
I posted a few more pictures of Barkley... here are 2 of my favourites.

OMG he is so adorable!
Congrats!!
I want him!!!! He is too too too cute!!!!!!! PINK BELLY!
Love his pics! Too bad we're thousands of miles apart - it looks like Bingley and Barkley would be good playmates! Good to know you're still setting the alarm, too! We're on a similar schedule - Bingley goes to bed around 10 and we wake him up at 3:30 to go out. I think we may push it back to 4 soon. But I have to get up for work at 5:30 so it's easier for me to get deep sleep at 3:30 - seems contradictory, doesn't it?!!!
What a handsome boy you have there!! He is a "hoss" isn't he?? I could just squeeze him!!
I LOVE the Barkley pictures!!
Just seeing them gets me even more ready to see "our" puppy. I can't wait until we can go see the pups and hug them all!

How old are Barkley (and Bingley too) ??
Ours birthday is April 15th (tax day) 8O , so he is 17 weeks now.
Barkley was born on June 10th, so he is just over 10 weeks now. If you look at my photo albumn I have photos from as early as 3 weeks. I think Bingley's about the same age (maybe a week older?).

Do you know if the puppy the breeder's picked for you is a girl or a boy?
Steph,

He's beautiful! Congrats! You'll be surprised how quickly he grows. I remember with Pirate I thought he would turn into the worlds biggest dog, he was growing so fast!

Barkley looks like a panda! What adorable markings.

Thanks for the pictures. Enjoy your new boy.
Yeah, he does look like a panda!

I have been surprised at how fast he's growing. In the 2 weeks we've had him home we've already had to move the divider to expand his crate area.
Our pup is a boy. He was one of 3 left, all boys. The one picked for us has the best conformation and structure for a performance dog, according to the breeder. I guess I have to trust her knowledge and experience!!
Congratulations! He is just beautiful. I love your pictures! What an exciting time to have him enter your life. He couldn't be any cuter! I know you will enjoy many many happy times with him.
It will be interesting to see how big Barkley gets. I was initially going to get a female, but fell for the eyes (only one in the litter with blues). His dad is 100 lbs.. How big do you think yours will get ?
He is just absolutely gorgeous Steph! :)
