Do I don't I ... sheepie & boarder collie as mates ?

I really don't know what to do ..... we bought a lovely new motorhome at the weekend, as I don't want to put Ollie in kennels, so goodbye Caribbean holidays and hello travelling around the UK and Europe. Anyway, whilst there on this idyllic farm was the last in a litter of Boarder Collies, he is 8 weeks old and called Jack. I've had Boarders before and was wondering if he would get on with Ollie, who is a little over 1 and who's playmate, oddly enough is a Yorkshire Terrier and they get on famously. So anyonw know if Sheepies and Boarders mix ?

I know the answer to this one!!!!

Pirate (sheepdog) and Keira (border collie) are my dogs!!!! They are 180 degrees different in personality! And they love each other dearly!!!

Keira (while not hyper) is full of energy, while Pirate would rather lay on the couch and watch tv.

But, I think they build each other up. Keira always wants to play ball, which Pirate doesn't really care about. But he does it because she is doing it, and so he gets some really good exercise.

Keira is definately the smarter of the two, but she is smart enough to know to let Pirate think he's the boss.

They are a great combination. Oh...and he teaches her how to relax when he gets tired.

Let us know what you decide!
Ditto!

Guinness was about 1.5 years old when we got Murphy (who was about 6-7 weeks when he adopted us from the local shelter).

Guinness (our OES) is very laid back and Murphy (border collie/American Eskimo mix) is so not ! He is a good boy and very smart, but is the dominent one of them. He is very energetic and active and Guinness gets alot more exercise... and with his hips, the vet is very happy about that.

We really never thought about getting a 2nd dog that was not a Sheepie, but when we saw Murphy at the shelter, we just couldn't leave him there! And Guinness just loves him, too!

Everyone's situation is different, but our's is a great mix!
Keira was from a shelter too. She was about 5 months when we got her. No, I wasn't looking for another dog at the time, but she gave me the "eyes" and I was hooked.

Pirate, who was 1 1/2 at the time, loved her from the start.

Is Murph the most affectionate dog you've ever had? Keira is. She's a cuddler and a "french" kisser!
I'm sure they would, most oes get along with just about everyone if they have been properly socialized.
Actually, Murphy (a/k/a The Murphinator as my husband calls him) is very independent. He is a daddy's boy and follows my husband everywhere. He will give a kiss before his treats and before his breakfast/dinner and loves to snuggle at night when we go to bed. But he does lick you CONSTANTLY! Not kisses kind of licks, but rather cleaning you kind of licks-especially after you get out of the shower! 8O

Guinness is the snuggle-bumm. He is a momma's boy. Follows me everywhere and always gives me huggs and kisses.

But does Keira have a very "active" nose? Murph always is sniffing everything!
Does she ever! We joke that her nose needs to be tightened, cuz its too wiggly!
Ollie's Mum,

I am sorry that we "took over" your thread, but as you can see as far as Deborah and I are concerned, yes, Sheepies and Border Collies mix. They are completely different personalities and activity levels, but it sounds like both Guinness and Pirate just love their four legged b/c sibblings.

Good Luck in whatever you decide, but I also think that what Willowsprite said is correct -Most sheepies love other dogs if they have been socialized properly.
Rags was living in a foster home with a Border Collie mix when I rescued her. They got along very well.
Hi,

It's not so much the breed of the dogs that determine weather they'll be buddies or not, as a pup that young will be readily accepted.

Dogs have a code of law in which 99% adhere to - they never attack a pup but will dicipline them. Those little tyke's can be pretty annoying - tugging on ears, sharp puppy teeth, an other inappropriate doggie behavior. An older dog always teaches the new puppy good canine rules so less interferance from you as possible is best. Yup, even when that little one tugs on the heartstrings and yelps mornfully..the older dog just probably told them..hey back off.

Back to whether you should get another dog...I vote for YES! In a perfect scenerio..dogs of opposite sex have less problems. Then again...this is coming from me who has three dogs. Ha Ha...see I said in a perfect scenerio. Besides you are speaking of a tiny pup and Ollie would be automatically be top dog as he's older and the pre-existing dog in the house.

I am so happy for you! Let us know your decision.

Marianne
Thank you so much for all your advice, I feel so much better now, haven't slept much since Saturday thinking about it.

I said I'd make my decision by Wednesday, so I have another day. My husband isn't keen, but he said that about Ollie and you should see the pair of them, Ollie gets treated like royalty !!!

Thanks again to all of you, its helping me a great deal
Please let us know the decision! I think we all feel like we are vested in this.

I know you will make the right decision.
There's border collies next door, and although they only chase each other through the fence, they seem to play together great!
Good luck! I grew up with Border Collies and I think if you're good about introductions, etc your pups will create a new pack in no time! They are both wonderful breeds! :)
It's Wednesday!!!!! What's the decision???????
Well I couldn't convince my husband one bit and I have to consider him, so the answer is no, I've had a few tears last night and Dave didn't get any dinner and he can expect me to be a bit off with him for a few days, I'm not happy at all, I'm just hoping he'll change his mind over the weekend - thanks again for all your kind wishes and ecouragement.
Makalya,
I always find things happen for a reason. If this was meant to be, it would (or still will be). Please don't be sad. You can't enter into a committment (and getting a new dog is a major committment) without everyone on board.

Smile, please!
Thanks Deborah, and thats why we don't have little Jack - it needs to be a joint decision - ah well, maybe another time.

Thanks again xx
After all that we are getting Jack !! yeeee haaa !!!!!!!

I'm sure Ollie and Jack will be great playmated :hearts:
How exciting :cheer: ! You have to make sure we get reports, stories and pictures!

Congrats!
Ahhh glad you picked up on this again - yes, photos, up-dates will be posted as soon as I get the little fellow :yay:
Great news. I have an oes with 2 collie mixes they get on great cant wait to hear stories and see lots of pictures :D
