Daisy attacking foster pup

Daisy (OES) is the sweetest dog I have ever known. While she occasionally meets another dog she does not care for, it is rare.

Today, while helping out w/ a rescue group a purebred Gt Pyranees pup less than 3 mos old was returned by her adoptive family because after 3 wks she is barking terribly while being left in a crate during the day. They live in an apt and this was a big problem.

As she was returned at the end of the day and hadn't had all her puppy shots, finding a foster for her was difficult. When I had originally seen her, I said that if I hadn't adopted Ollie (Heinz 57) I would have taken her in a minute. Anyway, I said I would take her overnight and even thought of trying to find another home for Ollie (as much as I love him) and keeping this pup. Ollie is easier to place mostly because he does not require as much care.

Anyway, I brought the pup home and Daisy immediately began attacking her when she entered the doorway - I hadn't even gotten inside yet. I was surprised, but with all the upheaval lately w/ the foster pups a week ago, I thought ok, this will pass. She had accepted the others.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to pass. I know it can take a few weeks for dogs to sort things out, but Daisy really does not seem to like this pup and attacks her (rather visciously) every time it comes out of the broom closet. Since someone has to leave her tomorrow (I live in a townhouse and 3 dogs is too much), I'm afraid the Gt Pyranees will have to go.

I'm really surprised by Daisy's reaction to this pup. Any suggestions.

Puppies usually have a grace period where they are "safe" from harm from adults. Not all dogs respect this grace period. I had a dog that hated puppies, and actually bit one that was only 3 weeks old.

If Daisy was fine with the other pups I woulds suspect that due to his size she may not recognize the Pyr as a puppy. Or she is one of the rare dogs that doesn't allow pups to be pups.

This is not a good situation for anyone, as the pup could be traumatized and become fearful of other dogs. Best to keep them separated and make alternate arrangements.
I have already contacted the rescue group and advised them that the pup needs to be moved tomorrow.

However, I am still extremely surprised by Daisy's reaction as she rarely responds negatively to any other dog/ puppy and even when she does it it usually because they have made some negative advance toward her or Ollie.
