Hi, this is my first posting, and I need advice, Winston is the third OES I have owned, but my first rescue OES. He is very precious and beautiful, but suffers from INTENSE seperation anxiety, when I left him alone for work the first day he ate the couch and blinds and lost bowel and bladder control, second day I bought a crate, and he chewed his way out and ate the sheetrock, today he is in the bathroom while I am at work, and heaven knows what awaits me at home,,any ideas are so welcome. Thank you

I fostered a dog once who sounds just like yours... she needed a lot of love and reassurance. And patience. And a bank account would have been nice....lol... the day I left her in the bathroom because I was afraid she'd hurt herself frantically trying to get out of the crate, she destroyed the floor and the door. Not much you can do, punishing them only makes them more anxious, but reassurance worked over time and we found her a home a few months later after she had calmed down. Perhaps try a steel wire kennel? I don't know what kind of crate she chewed through, but a cage that is appropriate for her size might be the best bet. It can be a haven for an anxious dog once they learn that they are safe in there.
I think Seperation Anxiety is very common - particularly with Rescues! It's probably one of the reasons dogs are given up - as it can be very frustrating!

I would try confining him - with alot of toys and/or bones (maybe a KONG stuffed or marrow bones that will last a long time without breaking apart). The other thing you can try is taking baby steps. Try leaving him alone for a short period of time - and if he does well - praise him and give him rewards!

You can try Rescue Remedy and/or Lavender Oil (the lavender oil would be put on his nose) - both are natural calming remedies.

If worse comes to worse - you can talk to the Vet about a prescription!
I love Kongs!! I put a bit of yogurt or peanut butter in one, put it in the freezer and use it the next day. Frozen marrow bones (I love those too!) last longer than defrosted ones.

HOW DID HE DO IN THE BATHROOM??
Any progress?
