DID ANYONE HAVE A KNEE REPLACEMENT?

I was woundering if anyone here has had a knee replacement? I am 42 years old and I need one. If there is anyone that could give me any input on this please let me know. I go to the Dr on Aug 10th to discuss setting up a time for surgery. :(

Sorry to hear that. At 42! OMG they think that a replacement lasts about 15 years, you'll probably need 3 of them over your life. :(

I'm sure you have thought about it, but if you haven't grab a second opinion. Your insurance will probably cover it. Be sure to take your records and go to a completely unaffiliated doctor.

Good luck! I hope others with info about it can post their advice here for you.
My father had both of his knees replaced at the same time.
He said that it was the best thing he ever did. He looks taller now and has no problems running after his Grandson. He would do it again in a heartbeat.

Ron, My Dad said they would need to replace some parts down the road. I don't believe the whole knee would ever need to be replaced again.
So the next surgery would be way less invasive.
Vic had an accident years ago motocrossing, and then reinjured his
knee putting it through the floorboard of a car in another accident.
He had knee replacement surgery about 28 years ago. They told him
he'd be lucky if it lasted 15 years but he is still going strong. (Knock
wood) Hasn't ever had any trouble or pain with it at all. Of course
now that I actually wrote that out loud.....
Also my sister in law had knee replacement about 3 years ago. She has
never recovered from it, but then I don't think she really wanted to. She
never did the PT, and she refuses to do anything more physical than
drive thru the fast food window. Last fall she said she was thinking about
doing PT to get more mobility, but it never happened. I guess I wonder
why she had the surgery if she never planned to use the knee again
anyway?!
bge- you and I may have the same doctors - I go to Overholt and Faralli
and so did my mom and my sister. They are some of the best around.
I am looking at some surgery in the near future too.
I'll tell you one thing, the vast majority of people I know who have had
it done have done really really well afterwards. There are always a few
that have problems, but then they are usually the ones who
complain about everything.
Good luck!

They are making some REALLY good knees these days. My Dad had both done too, he also said it was the best thing he ever did.

As a nurse I can tell you that the first few days after surgery will be pretty rough. BUT if you follow your rehab instructions and do what you are told to within just a few weeks you'll feel 10% better. The only people I ever knew that weren't MUCH better off after than before were those who did not follow through with the exercises and the knee stiffened up.

GOOD LUCK!
My Grandma had it done and she was Extremely happy with the results! The recovery was difficult for her because she was quite old but the results have been great for her.
I had both of miny replaced at the same time 3 yrs ago. Yes the first couple of days were hell. At the time I had no cartilege left in either knee. I asked the doc whether the operation was medically indicated. He said yes. I then asked at what point people decide to get things done. His answer "When they can no longer stand the pain". Considering the fact that Cortizone shots were no longer giving me any relief, I was getting about 2 hours of sleep at night, and was taking 10 - 12 ibuprophen and aspirin a day, I told him to schedule the operation. Since I couldn't afford to take double the time off for separate operations, I asked if he could do them both at the same time, and whether he and done so before; his answer was affirmative; later I found out from the hospital that he routinely does about 20 of these a month!

The operation was on a Monday; I went home Friday. My son drove me to Church Sunday, I was walking with a walker. The following Sunday I drove my self to church and was walking with a cane. I was back to work full time in 6 weeks (cashier 40 hrs a week). By the way, when I came to from the operation, my legs were quite painful - muscles and tendons - due to the trauma of moving them aside to get to the joints. But there was absolutely no more knee pain.

If you wish to ask me any more questions, you're welcome to eMail or pm me.

Interesting stuff - I am due to have mine done, well one in a few years time - I'm only 34 and have no cartlidge left in my knee - thank god I won't have to pay for it - good old NHS
My Grandma just had both of her knees replaced in December...I wish I could upload this picture Grant just took of her at my cousin's wedding a few weeks ago! She is dancing up a storm! She likes to show off her recovery when ever she can! She had to get a gallstone removed last month and Mom said she spent the entire time in emergency showing everyone what she can do with her knees!

She worked really hard with rehab...that seemed to be the key!

If you are anything like Grandma...it will improve your life tremendously!!!!
