Ear hairs, how important to pluck?

Allie went to the pro groomer for the 1st time....When I picked her up, the lady told me she hated getting her ears plucked. To start playing with them more, so she gets used to it for the next time. (I do and have played with them, she hates even when we use ear rinse in them a few times a week!)
I noticed how pretty they looked when we got home, but Allie really freaked when I tried to look in them...Yesterday, I noticed she has dried blood in the ear tunnels of both, at the bottom and when she was scratching her ear herself, she gave out a yelp!

So, do they bleed when this is done? And how important is it to have this done? Thanks guys!

They're probably pretty sensitive after having them done, especially if you don't do it at home a lot. I admit, I don't either. I'm really squeamish about hurting them so I usually just leave it to the groomer. But, it is really important to keep the ear canal clear of hair. Not plucking it can cause ear infections and it can matt up inside the ear.

If Allie hates the rinse, try either using the presoaked pads or using the rinse you have on a cotton ball. My guys don't like the squirting in the ear either. I know you can't get as far into the ear canal but unless they're really dirty, you really don't need to all the time anyway.
We each have things we just can't force ourselves to do for our sheepies. I draw the line at trimming the nails.
I've been pulling the hair for our sheepies forever. The easiest way,IMO, is with a hemostat. I check their ears daily and pull it as needed. It's much easier to pull a small amount than doing it all at once. Like doing your eyebrows.
I would call the vet. There shouldn't be any blood in the canal. She may have scratched herself after the hair pulling.
Both ears are full of dried blood, right in the opening of the canal. She is so nerded out about it, will not let me get in there to really look and use a wet tissue to clean it out. I feel bad for her, wonder if this will make her hate the grooming prcess now.....Only 5mths old!

Hi Chris,

Its very important. Bogart has had ear infections from time to time.
Even with dilligent care.

Carl has a great post on caring for your sheepies ears.

If its difficult for you to do, have your groomer or vet assistant
help.

Beautiful pictures of your puppy-Bogart says he's in love :hearts: :hearts:
Ahhhh, thanks Zahra! I actually have some new ones to post! She is getting so big! About 31 pds right now, turns 5mths tomorrow! We just love her...Bogart is very handsome also!

I just now put some ear rinse on a cotton ball and tried to dab in there, to get the dried blood out...She is just freaked out when I try and get in her ears! I am going to call the groomer ask if she at least softened up the hairs a little before plucking! Plus if she noticed bleeding right away...
Thanks again everyone!
I have never seen blood coming out of Dixie's or Bosley's ears. I would be concerned.

Bosley hates getting his ears doen, and will cry like a baby. We do it very gently and with special little treats, so he tolerates it. I pluck a few every few days, and just by hand. I shove my fingers in his ear, and grab a few hairs and pluck them out.

Dixie LOVES getting her ears plucked. She just sits there and leans into me while I grab a few at a time and pull them out. And when I am finished she punches me for more 8O

Both dogs will shake their heads, afterwards. It should not hurt them, but tickle more than anything else.

But it is important NOT to pluck hairs if there is a possibility of an ear infection in there. That could hurt and also expose the hair folicles to infection, and make things worse.
Bosley mom, I am wondering if it is dried blood? Just in the little cave area of the ear....Not in the tunnel at all..Has no odor what so ever. But it is dark brown. I have it all out of the one ear, am working on the other. I sneak up when she is napping, then give her a treat as I clean it out.
I think if it comes back this week, I will get her into the Vet....

If it's dark brown in that area, it could be dirt or yeast. If she has a yeast infection, that could be why she's yipping when it's touched. It may not be a bad idea to run her by the vet t be safe. Even if it's nothing, the vet can better explain to you what a healthy ear should or shouldn't look like as well as identify what the gunk is in her ear already.
Yeah, i just looked in the one ear, we were outside and with the light, it does not seem to be dried blood...When we 1st brought her home, she had an ear infection and it had a smell to it....There is no odor at all with this. I have the one ear cleaned, no more in it....
Just like having a baby......

Your puppy needs to be seen by a veterinarian.

There is a very good chance that it has yeast or a bacterial infection. Ask your vet to show you how to properly clean the ears and remove hair.

Excellent advice. Hannah was just diagnosed with yeast in her ears and it is brown. She was given MalOtic ointment. Hannah is six years old and this is the first ear problem she has ever had. I usually do what Bosley's mom suggested and that has worked up until this time.

Good luck, hope her ears feel better. She sounds really sweet.
I have Violet's little hairs removed by the groomer once a month and have never experienced blood afterwards. I do however deal with yeast infections in her ears every once and a while. I would follow the advise of the other members and have your Vet check them out.
