My dog knows how to use the ice dispenser! OH NO!

OLIVE HAS LEARNED TO HOLD DOWN THE LEVER ON THE ICE MAKER AND LET OUT ALL THE ICE. IT WAS FUNNY THE FIRST COUPLE OF TIMES, BUT NOW I AM SICK OF PICKING UP A LOT OF ICE. PLUS WET SOCKS YUCK :!: SHE PLAYS HOCKEY WITH IT AND KICKS IT ALL OVER THE PLACE. HOW DO YOU UNTEACH A BEHAVIOUR YOU DIDN'T EVEN KNOW YOU TAUGHT THEM :?

I have no advice for you but I have to say that is hilarious. Just picturing it has me laughing out loud. What a smart dog!

Is there any way to disable the ice dispenser lever so she can't push it? Maybe pack some tea towels behind and around the lever. After a few tries (or a few days) maybe she'll just figure it will never work and give up.....
HEHEHEHE it's hilarious~

I think the key point is to find him doing the act/or right before he's about to do it and say "NO!" or "Off". If your dog understands "No!" He won't press the ice machine and will get tons of treats/praises/kisses AND an icecube. If he doesn't understand no, use anything from "No! Sit" or "No down!"

It does take consistency and a good 2 months.
I used this method to prevent my dog from keeping off the food that falls on the kitchen floor, and to keep him off the beds. Not if a good falls on the kitchen floor he automatically goes to the down position and stares REALLY hard at the piece of carrot... of course he knows that if he waits he gets the carrot, if he doesn't I take it out of his mouth..
Oh, this post makes me grateful our dispenser has a lock feature on it. The boys haven't figured it out yet either. :) Jasper loooves ice too, so I could only imagine how our kitchen floor would look if he figured out the dispenser.

I'm laughing at her playing hockey with the ice. :) I like Joanna's advice. Good luck!
Oh my gosh. I can't imagine what that must be like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8O

Yuki stands by the ice machine whenever she hears it go off, but if she could get it herself... we'd have a huge mess!

Any way you could put something like duct tape over it for a few days until she forgets about it? Truman loves ice too and has been know to help himself when we open the freezer.
OK I RESPONDED TO MY OTHER ADVERT ON ACCIDENT sO IF YOU LOOK AT THE DOG INSURANCE ADVERT YOU WILL FIND A MUCH LONGER RESPONSE...OOPS. i TRIED TO PUT TOWELS ON IT AND SHE JUST TRIED TO EAT THE TOWELS AND THEN STILL GOT TO THE ICE. i ALSO TRIED TO DISABLE THE ICE LEVER, AND I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. i AM HOPING SOMEONE WHO LIVES CLOSE TO SC CAN RECOMEND A GOOD TRAINER BECAUSE THGE PETSMART THING WAS USELESS. UNTILL THAT TIME I WILL TAKE MY CUE AND LET THE ICE MELT AND JUST MOP THE FLOOR. i GUESS I WILL HAVE REALLY CLEAN FLOORS NOW.
LOL. Bunker and Rainger Girl have both figured this out at My parents. Just telling them no over and over has seemed to work.
