Vacation in Pompeii

Okay - before you groan  :D , I don't mean to bore you with more vacation photos!! But, a couple of people asked specifically about the Pompeii ruins, so here are a few pictures. :D

This shot just shows the store fronts from across the street:

This is a wine bar. It opened right up onto the sidewalk by the street. There were 65 of them in the city. Apparently, in AD79, people drank a LOT of wine.

Image

There were no actual bodies found. What they found were "negative images" of where the bodies were, so they filled the holes with a sort of plaster and now have the casts of several bodies, both human and animal.

I wasn't supposed to take this picture, but I didn't know that until after the guard started yelling at me in Italian.
This is a bedroom inside the brothel in ancient Pompeii. There were also some very graphic murals on the walls displaying the services offered there 8O . I didn't get pics of those.

Image

If you can ignore my nephew doing his impression of a horse and the camera strap that slipped in front of me, you'll see the ruts in the streets made by chariots. Pretty cool, huh?

Image

According to our tour guide, this is the most important and well reknowned mosiac in the world. It's inside what was the largest house in Pompeii. The home took up an entire city block.

Now, I promise - that's it!! No more vacation photos!

That is absolutely fascinating. Now I want to learn more about Pompeii.

Are you sure you didn't get photos of the graphics on the wall??? 8)

I want more vacation photos, please!
Amazing!! More pics please! :)
I find it so weird that I have almost the exact same pic of that body casting that you do! We were in Italy about 10 years ago and it looks like it hasn't even changed.

Now I have to see if I got any pics of the murals. 8O
Who could get bored with these pictures? They're wonderful!
Who told you "no more pics"???????????? We'll take all the pics you want to post!

These are great! :cheer: I'm so glad you had such a wonderful vacation. And what memories your nephew will carry with him for life!
:D :D Okay - I'll try not to make you sorry you asked. :D :D

I took this picture to show a couple of things. One, how the city was laid out on a grid and had typical "blocks" and "intersections". Also, I thought the crosswalks were very cool. Do you see the raised stones between the streets? They were there so you could cross the street without getting wet or muddy when it rained. The stones were placed far enough apart so that you could walk comfortably and the chariots could still get through.

This is an oven in one of the 35 bakeries in Pompeii.
I have no idea what was going on with me & that camera strap that day!!

Image

This is the calidarium, the first room inside the public baths in Pompeii. You can see the cubby holes where they put their clothes & shoes, etc, and the murals on the walls. The baths had four rooms. The calidarium where the hottest water was, also had a sauna. The trepidarium was the next room where the warm water was and the frigidarium was the last place they bathed to cool the body & refresh it. Finally, there was a massage room where slaves would massage the body with olive oil and then scrape it off.

Image

This is the amphitheatre in Pompeii.

Image

These are the cells where the gladiators were kept between fights.

Image

These murals are on the walls inside the smaller, more typical home in Pompei.
(again with camera strap!!)

Image

This is a mural inside of a bedroom in a smaller house in Pompeii. They were said to use them to make the spaces appear larger.

Image

This is the courtyard, or peristyle, inside the biggest house in Pompeii. Can you imagine having that huge courtyard inside your house?

Image

This water fountain is still working on the original aquaduct that brings water down from the mountains. We filled up our water bottles a couple of times. The water was really good & cold!!

That would be very cool if you did! Although, they did say something about that particular building just being recently opened. :?
Weren't there some statues outside, no wait, there were stone markers that labeled what the building was. I remembered everybody in the group giggling when they said what it was.
Teenagers!
Yes, there were statues outside the building distinguishing what was done there.

I was quite glad my nephew wasn't paying enough attention at that point to ask me any questions I wasn't prepared to answer.
Seriously cool! I love the fact that all this has been excavated from under all that ash & rock.

More please. I'm not doing anything else today, LOL!
my stepson went to pompei and the pictures he brought back were facinating! did you get a picture of the room where there were a lot of casts of the people? It was a very eerie photo....
I did get some pics of that room (it was in the baths). There is one in this post (above). I took others, but there were so many people in that room, it's harder to see the "bodies" for all the people. ( it's a "forest for the trees" thing)
Great pictures Tammy!
They are so fascinating.
I REALLY need to go to Italy!
Great pictures. Looks like you are having a fabulous time.
Thought it was funny that both people in the picture with the cast of a body are on cell phones!
I find the story of Pompeii to be absolutely fascinating. There have been a couple of PBS programs about Pompeii in the last few years.

There is also a Novel: Pompeii by Robert Harris that isn't the best literary work I've ever read but tells the story of Pompeii in "story" form. I bought the book through Amazon.com about a year ago as it's out of print. I think I only paid $3.00 for it. I think it would be a great story to read after actually being there.

Your pics are just amazing!!!!
i love the pictures! italy is definitely on my list of places to go next
The pictures are just amazing and your captions are so descriptive and easy to understand. I, for one, love your pics and could enjoy a TON more. What an amazing opportunity to get to enjoy so much history and to share it with all of us. Thanks.

Hope to go someday.
Thanks for letting me share! :D
Cool photos, thanks so much for sharing!! Fascinating! And I love your avatar too, so adorable!
Wow
Awesome vacation photos!!!
Thanks so much for sharing!

I wish my parents had taken us to pompeii for summer vacations. I think I would have done muct better in World history and actually like it!!!
THanks! You're very kind. :D

Deb - I love your new avatar, too. I've been admiring it for days!! However did you get that perfect pose?
The pictures really do look fantastic! That was really a great vacation you had. Mr. J always thinks it's funny when I give a Beaureguard's Mom update. :D

He thinks it's so weird and says things like (sarcastically) ".....oh Beaureguard's mom thinks or does this.. oh, I remember her (then rolls his eyes)." I think the last thing I told him is what you drive (because I like it and we are still going back and forth on our next vehicle).
LOL...that's okay. I give my sis Little J updates, too, because he & her son are pretty close in age.
