Happy 5 month birthday Chip.....

Pictures please!!!
It goes so quick and before you know it they are big kids. :D

If you are feeding a good quality puppy/growth dry food then it has all that is needed as far as the correct quantity of calcium in his diet for growth. If he still has yoghurt then he is getting some from that too.

Oversupplementation of calcium can lead to major problems. So NO if you are on a premium growth dry for him.
Thanks.

He eats 25% Wellness, 75% Nutro Chicken/Rice/Oatmeal formula. The Wellness was too rich for him on its own and we have found a good combination.
A, I found this liquid vitamin stuff (I cant remember the name of it) at a pet health food store...all natural ingredients...its like a gravy. Anyway the ''bacon cheeseburger'' flavor is Pandas favorite...4 squirts in her food and boy does she gobble dinner now...It not only has calcuim, but all of the vitamin complexs....its about $5.00 and comes in a bottle the size of salad dressing...mine lasted a month....Ill find out the name if you want....
Thanks for the tip, I will check into it- There are some neat nutritional supplements on some of the "natural" sites... so doing some research!

Thanks for the support/advice
Hi Alissa :D
Saw this ... guess too much is not a good thing 8O
Calcium excess
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm ... icleid=652
Feeding high calcium diets with excess calcium is often blamed for contributing to bone problems in young, rapidly growing dogs. There does appear to be a link between the incidence of hypertrophic osteodystrophy (HOD), osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and hip dysplasia, and the overfeeding of calcium. In recent studies, researchers fed dogs calcium at a much higher than recommended amount, and compared the incidence of disease in dogs that were fed normal or less than normal calcium levels. As would be expected, the animals that were overfed calcium showed increased incidence of skeletal problems including hip dysplasia.
Diane...premium dry kibble should do it for Chipper
Hmmm...I'm not a vet or nutritionist though
Thanks D!
Appreciate- very interesting.

I am just concerned that he is growing so fast. When he arrived May 6, he was 17 pounds. Now are at 42! Just want to be sure our Chippy is getting everything he needs
Alissa,

I was interested in how much Chipper weighs now as London got weighed today and at 13 weeks she is now 22 lbs. That means in the next 2 months her weight will double???? 8O
Thanks Diane for putting up that link on over supplementation of Calcium. :D

Alissa what you are feeding him is fine, he is on a good diet to help with his rapid growth. With the mixture of the two you are feeding him he is getting a good balance of all that he needs during his rapid growth stage.

This condition of over supplementation of calcium is mostly prominent in large and giant breeds as the rapid growth they experience as puppies too much has been linked to bone deformaties.

Calcium supplementation was used when there was not good quality balanced pet foods on the market like today. When people just fed there dogs anything, now all is balanced in the right proportions for growing dogs there is no need for it anymore to be added to a pups diet.

Years ago (and yes I am showing my age  ) I had one sheepie on a home made diet which I added Bone Meal too for calcium as a puppy that was OK as she was not on a prepared dog food & needed that in her diet for the rapid growth stage, that was also worked out with a nutritionist as to the quantities needed in her diet.

Chipper will be fine and grow and bloom into a lovely big boy
I have a question....is the stuff that im giving Panda okay? She loves it! I forgot to check how much of everything that is in it.....she only gets about 3-4 tablespoons in her dinner...
Alissa,
We need new pics of your little man.

Darcy, What is stuff your giving Panda?
I threw the bottle away the other night....I just called the place and they arent open until 10 am....Ill let you know...I dont think with one bottle I poisioned her, after all it is made for dogs, but if it isnt going to help, Id rather not give her any....sometimes I just get really confused regarding all of the stuff that are available for animals (and even humans) Why are suppliments and vitamins available, if it isnt necessary?
Okay the sauce is called NutraSauce...it has .13% calcium..its the bacon cheeseburger flavor.
here it is...what do you all think?

That's about right! Foz is 5 1/2 months and weighed in today at about 40 pounds.
Darcy what are you feeding Panda as far as Kibble or food goes? If it is a
good quality kibble then all is in it for her.

Vitamin supplements are there to balance home made diets that is why they are around. Also years ago as most Kibble was not very nutritional mostly used as a filler, people use to add supplements then as a lot of kibble then was mostly cereal based so not much in them.

If she is a fussy eater you can get Liver sprinkles that makes the food yummy and encourages them to eat. :D

Mine get a premium Kibble plus I give them fresh meat and Vegies, I always read on the pack what is in the Kibble as far as ingredients, additives and preservatives go.
Happy Birthday Chipper!

Darcy, I'm marveling at all of that typing :o
I was just thinking the same thing! (about the typing).
Chip is 42.4 pounds and GROWING... Will get some new pics up soon!
