Hypersensitive?

Our house is the typical ranch style construction with attached front entry garage, living room, entry foyer, dining room and 1 bedroom across the front of the house and kitchen, family and rear bedrooms across the back.

The last two day, of upper 90's heat I keep the front and family room closed off and just cool the back. The dogs like to lay on the slate kitchen floor.

Each day about mid afternoon they began barking excitedly as if someone was at the front door. Remember, the front hall is also closed off from the rest of the house. Windows are thermopane, front is brick: pretty well sound proof from the rest of the house.

Finally I look out the front window - sure enough, the neighbor's cat is lying in the shade on our front porch. Cats don't usually make much noise. Amazing how sensitive dogs' hearing, or sense of smell must be.

Again. when the neighbor behind me lets his schnauzer out in the back yard, they know it and want to go out so they can run to the fence and bark at him.

Wow, nothing gets by them? Could the cat have peed thus the smell?

Be grateful, at least they will alert you to trouble. I'm beginning to think mine will sleep thru it.....unless it is : a storm or a siren. I'd prefer to be alerted to other items and have them sleep thru the storm and siren.
They certainly hear things we can't or at least they do before we do - Ollie jumps and runs to the window, and I think whats he seen, but infact he knows Dave is on his way home and sure enough minutes later his car is on the drive.
Cats are really quiet, it is amazing they can be detected. I know when they are round at night when they drink from the dog's outside water bowl, right below the bedroom window.

It is amazing how dogs "know" long before we do. Actually part of it is "telling time." MO must be at the front gate or inside the front door starting 15 minutes before my husband is due. She won't eat, follow commands, etc........she is waiting for Dad. If he's traveling, she faithfully waits up to an hour after his due time, then gives up. See photo in my file, the dog on the chair.......

As for hearing, yes, sometimes they do actually hear our vehicles long before we are visible. Clancy the Irish Wolfhound could hear the UPS truck several blocks away and was ready and waiting for their "100 yard dash together. The UPS truck would stop at the property edge and then race Clancy to the other side of the property.

My current minivan must be extra quiet because many times I have surprised the dogs when I pull up........"Oh, we didn't hear ya." Husband drives an older pickup and yes, they do hear him about a block away.
I am always amazed with there senses mine let me know someone is here before there is even a knock at the front door. 8O We live mostly downstairs and the front door is upstairs so no need for a door bell as sheepie girls tell me  They don't bark, just run to the baby gate on the stairs, butts wiggling with excitement so I know to expect a knock at the door soon as someone is there

Possums drive me nuts, sometimes at night, as they are nocturnal, one of the girls gruffs or carrys on a bit and it turns out to be a possum scrambling across the roof or hanging outside somewhere, nothing gets past a sheepie when it hangs around there home.
Lisa,

Your story of the Possums reminds me of an incident I had once with my former Collie.

One night when I came home from work late, Laddie wasn't barking at me like usual. When I went out in the yard to see if he was OK, and turned on the outside light I noticed him circling around something. On closer look I realized it was a Possum. Seemed dead. :( I walked over to it and kicked it and it appeared to be stiff. With a shovel I picked it up and dropped it in a plastic grocery bag and hung it on the fence gate so he couldn't get to it, figuring I'd throw it in the trash the next day.

Next morning when I let Laddie out I checked the bag. Empty! Hole chewed throught the bottom. The possum was indeed playing Possum and was gone! :D
That's real funny george, well maybe not for the possum 8) . Did not know you had them there too
