Scifi TV fans????

Is anyone a big fan or loyal watcher of scifi channel? I'm total in love with their new versions of Battlestar Galactica and Dr. Who. Hubby loves the Stargate series.

Anybody else???

I just got into the new Battlestar and am catching up through the reruns.

They just premiered a new show last night...Eurika...it was very entertaining!!
I missed that one... how was it? Worth watching?

Battlestar is very addicting. I have season one, and I'm gonna borrow season 2 from my dad. can't wait till season 3 comes out on DVD so I can have that one. I haven't watched a scifi show that well written in a long, long time... Still trying to figure out what is going on between Gaius and his blond cylon chick! Were you able to watch season 3 at all???
Season three starts this October...I think. Season 1 is on dvd. The first part of Season 2 is on dvd...and the second part comes out this summer. We have watched season one and are watching season 2 as they replay the episodes.

Eureka was very cute. It isn't like Battlestar at all. It is about a small town of super genius's(sp). It is a secret town that the government keeps as a think tank...here's a link.

http://www.scifi.com/eureka/
I'm not much of a sci fi kind of girl, but the only show I really watched on the sci fi channel is MST3K, so funny! And one of my friends was an intern on it, so that made it better when you had to watch and see his name in the credits!
:excited: I loved that show, the writing was really witty. My favorite Episode was "Hercules And The Moon Women". The characters are doing a skit- singing a song celebrating pants (because of course in the movie Hercules is wearing a greek battle skirt thingy, no pants at all)

"Dolphins are so smart"

"How smart are they?"

"Dolphins are so smart they WISH they wore pants"

"Pants, pants, pants, pants"

I loved that epidose.
OMG 8O MST3K! I love that show too! I wanted a Tom Servo robot for the longest time!
This thread should just be titled, "Who's a closet nerd?"
MST3K fan here too. Also a Who fan! Forget to tune into Battlestar.....so don't know about that

s.
Naww nerd, me never??? Did I ever mention I (and to be fair my sister and Dale too) went to a Startrek convention dressed for the costume contest as a trill on vacation at Risa (bathing suit, spots and all). As I remember we got lots of applause, particularly from the male contingent.

Bonus geek points to anyone who knows EXACTLY what I just was talking about... Extra bonus points to anyone who remembers that episode, and which series it was in...

What can I say, sometimes you just gotta let the inner geek out.
I remember Trill but not the episode where they first appeared.....the Trill on Deep Space was one sexy lady. Always enjoyed her, even if she did have a worm inside her!

Wait, I remember #1 getting to host a Trill............

To really add to that, who's still guilty of regularly quoting things from this show? My 2 all-time favorites were "Santa Claus Vs. the Martians" and "Mr. B Natural" and I still say lines from those all the time.
:D Chris and I have all of STargate seasons 1-8 on DVD, well we downloaded 8 b/c we couldn't wait. 8O Even though it has been on his computer for months and we just started watching it. OOPPS we got caught uo watching The 4400. Which i highly reccomend all you SciFi geeks here :yay: I think season 9 of staragte just started. It is a little cheesy but after you have watched a couple of season's you are sooo hooked. I love it, although not to be a "SPOILER" but we just started watching season 8 and Jack is no where to be found. Not to happy about that . Sure they give you little tidbits every once inn a while, but it is just not the same.

Shannon
I think the earlier seasons of stargate are much better then the later seasons... Once O'neil wasn't captain anymore, and they added the new guy (Farscape boy, what's his fuzz) they just are not as good...

Anybody enjoy Babylon 5? Mike has all the seasons and movies on DVD. That is another series that if you aren't watching all of it, you get lost really easily! It was good though... We just finished watching all of the seasons in order.
Stargate was better early on, now rehasing, soap opery, something has driven me off.

Bablylon......I quit it after a year or two......don't remember why.

Problem is DH doesn't care for these type shows anymore so unless he falls asleep, I'm stuck watching HIS shows. Only one TV in house......I know, we are weird.

Guess that drops me off the nerdy list.

Not weird at all. We have 2, one in the den and one in my bedroom. The one in the bedroom almost never is on, and the one in the den is on for maybe 2 hours a day.

...and we don't have cable, just a nice snowy picture.
So Ron... lack of cable is no excuse... were you a trek fan when it was on??? That was always aired on UPN.
I think Ron is refusing to answer my Trek question on the grounds that it may incriminate him...

Anyone else a big Star Trek fan beside Susan and me?
Define "big" Star Trek fan? Over 150 pounds?
To which "Trek" are you referring?

OMG. I just counted and we have nine TV's, each one in a different room, and used every day.... 8O

To which ever Trek you heart desires! I'm a fan of The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine myself, Voyageur was ok, Enterprise had the best opening of all of them... unfortunately the show itself ... not so much.

I also liked SOME of the various movies.
The orginal was pretty cool. The communicators were apprently the design goal for Motorolla's cell phone development.
Have you ever seen the documentary "how William Shatner changed the world"? It is about how all these techinical developments were based on Star Trek stuff that people wanted to have...
According to the documentary, Star Trek spurred the development of
Cell phones (communicators)
MRI and CAT scan machines (tricorders)
and many other cool devices that I can't think of off the top of my head. They even claim that the development of the apple computer was inspired by Trek! The show also talked to scientists working on transporter and warp drive technology...although those 2 are a BIT harder to crack! I do remember hearing that some scientists were able to successfully transport an atom across a room... (that was NOT on the documentary)

Ok, my geekiness is so showing through now
I am totally hooked on Battle star Galactica. If you have hi Def on Sunday nites a 8pm thaey are rebroadcasting last seasons episodes on UHD. It is pretty cool. I am really looking forward to the new episodes in October.

The Star Trek expsode was call The Trouble With Trills. One of the Best, very funny and cute from the original series.
I remember Trouble with Tribbles but not Trouble with Trills........am I having a senior moment???

susan (who still uses a Star Tac cell phone due to resemblence to communicator..... OK, a Bluetooth does resemble Uhura's ear piece. I can't wait until the cell phone pins on our chests, though dialing may appear we are playing with ourselves. )
I guess I'll admit to being a Star Trek fan too.

LOL

I've watched Star Trek since I was born, my Dad always watched the original series (already cancelled and in re runs by the time I was born), and then I watched every series after that. I loved Next Gen, and Voyager, I wasn't so crazy about DS9, and didn't like Enterprise at all. Voyager was my favorite.

And yes, I actually went to a convention once, but I didn't dress up as anything.... LOL
I'm a big scince fiction fan. Has anyone else been watching Eureka on Sci Fi? Great new show.

I'm proud to be a Trekkie. I love the original, and am still heartbroken over the cancellation of Enterprise. It started so well and had such a great cast! But the last few episodes were completely ridiculous.

As for vintage sci-fi, we have the DVDs of all of the Sliders episodes. I missed Sliders when it was on TV but my husband was a fan so I've caught up with it on DVD. Jerry O'Connell as a genius - what's not to love?
Sorry It was the Trouble With Tribbles
I remember Sliders! That was a good show... my favorite was the episode where they were stuck in the reality with the plague and antibiotics hadn't been discovered, and the Dr made pencillin from bread mold :) Can't beleive I still remember that!

In my very humble opinion, Battle Star Galactica is the BEST SciFi show on right now. The show is amazing... the writing is AWESOME. I love that show, I can't wait until October when it comes back on!!!

I did see parts of that, it has been on twice that I know of and both times it was at about 3am and I fell asleep. I would like to catch the whole thing one of these days.
Guess I'll jump in here. If anyone has looked at Carl's signature line....the dog's names are...

Martin Zephram
Gidget Nerys
Virgil Tiberius
Farouk Bashir
Brigham Batai
Josephine (Josie) Salia
Dawn Eline (Dawnster Monster)
Jeffurry Eugene (The Bedlam Terrierist)

So bonus geek points for everyone that can name what, series/character or a few are from favourite episodes of Star Trek, the middle names come from.

And BTW our officially registered Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) name is RISA lol
Willowsprite,

Since you already know the answers to this you have to keep quiet :rimshot: ! lol We'll see if anyone else is as obbessed as we are.

Carl
Ok... let's see how I do here!

Nerys.. as in Kira Nerys Ben Sisko's (head of DS9) #2 and Bajorin commander at DS9 (I think she finished as a commander anyhow) she was my sisters hero on that show! gotta love Kira!

Bashir- As in Dr. Julian Bashir... the whole reason my sister wants to be a Dr, he was the physician on DS9.

Zephram... Zephram Cocraine... I THINK he was the creator of the warp drive... hmm, hope I got that right.

Risa is the tropical vacation planet often visited when the writers wanted to kick the sexual tension up a notch on the shows.

The others are much harder. Those are all I've got, and really all I can think of with Tiberius is a roman legionaire.
Uuuuggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*waiting*

Please don't let me believe that only Carl, Michele and I know the answers to all those.
Iriskmj wrote:

How can you get all of those and not get Tiberius?

Think original series! ;)
Sorry, but when I think original series, all I can think of is the big gloppy lava monster, and William Shatner screaming KHAAAAANNNNNNN!!!!! oh yeah, and the wales... I loved the wales.

Why couldn't it have been something easy, like Riker or Troy??? TOS was before my time! hmmph...
Think TV SERIES not MOVIE

Although it applies to all of the movies based on the first series, too.
Big hint for Tiberius...Kirk.

The others (except for Jeffurry Eugene...think pilot for Janeway) are characters in episodes of TNG. Several are from just one...one more hint....the second choice we had for a kennel name was Kataan.

Everything else was correct...brownie points for detail! Yes, Zephram Cochrane the "father" of warp drive. And guess I have to say wales? ok, after careful thought...I got it whales! yes, loved the whales too....lol. And Spock and Kirk trying to swear. lol and sending a Russian to the newclear wessels. lol

And yes, we watch the new Battlestar Galactica...I love that they have the "old" Apollo playing a "bad" guy on the new one. Got a big kick out of that. And yep, what's up with the blonde chick? white is NOT her colour BUT she certainly has a red "kick butt take no prisoners" dress!

Any more guesses...the contest closes soon...lol.
D'OH!

Shame on me! James T Kirk.. as in Tiberius. That's just about as basic as they come!

I'll have to brush up on my TNG. Those names are familiar, but I just can't place them.

I wish the DVDs of the seasons of Star Trek weren't so expensive, it'd be fun to own them!
One of my favorite episodes of TNG - when Picard gets trapped in the ray and imagines an entire lifetime with the family he never had the chance to have. The planet was Kataan, his wife was Eline, and his best friend was Batai.

Salia was Wesley Crusher's first love.

Eugene was a tough one - I don't know the Voyager series that well so I had to look that one up. Tom Paris's middle name?

And Tiberius was the easy one! Did anyone else see the William Shatner Roast on Commedy Central the other night. I only caught the beginning. You've gotta love Shatner.

I think that has to be my absolute favorite episode of TNG...

Finally we have a winner!! Yee hah!! It is always interesting to see what different fans remember the most; but we really didn't expect any problems with Tiberius from an Star Trek fan.

The episode for Eline and Batai is called The Inner Light. Both Michele and I think it is the single best TNG episode followed closely by The Offspring. And within The Inner Light the best scene is Eline's reaction when Kaman asks permission to build a nursery!! The actress' reaction is just so "true and honest". The third best TNG episode is probably "The Metamorph" from which we already have a future pupster's name selected!

And yes we used Batai for Kaman's friend, not his son. Although Batai was well played by Patrick Stewart's son, I think Batai the son, was the weakest character in the episode - pretty flakey actually!

So for another bonus Star Trek geek point, what was special about Salia?

We thought Eugene would be the hardest one to figure out and apparently that was the case. But you have to agree that it works pretty well with Jeffurry, especialy since he is such a "Bedlam Terriorist"!

Now for Triple bonus Sci-fi geek points can anyone figure out where "Virgil" comes from. It's not any of the Star Trek series nor is it either Battlestar Galactica Series. I'll also give points for anyone finding a second spacefaring "Virgil" and triple the points if you can quote his immortal phrase - which incidentially I quoted to a surgeon just before "going under his knife" a couple of years ago.

Have fun!

The roast was brutal but everyone was an excellent sport. It was really funny. Poor George Takai took some of the hardest hits!

Was it Virgil the philosophizing orangutan from Planet of the Apes?
ButtersStotch wrote:

Nope, :P no apes involved. Both Virgil's are totaly human and should be honoured to share their name with Vigil Tiberius!!   Dang good guess though, real sci-fi fan to come up with that one so fast!!! :go:

Carl
I was trying to lay low with my dorkiness. ;)
Carl Lindon wrote:

When angered, she let her wild side come out - literally. And she was a big fan of chocolate mousse.
Hmmm... All I've got is the immortal greek poet Virgil, who also makes an appearance in Dante's Divine Comedy. That unfortunately has no relevance to sci fi. Rats!

Virgil, Virgil, Virgil...

Ah well... I will bow my head to the more superior scif fi trivia fans on the forum.

If I've got this one right, then I have to salute you as a true connoisseur of classic science fiction. First Lensman Virgil Samms of Doc Smith's Lensman series. I read them a long time ago and buy his books when I can find them in used bookstores. My copy of Gray Lensman is the original 1950s paperback. I have a few of Smith's Skylark books too. But I can't remember the immortal phrase and don't own the first couple in the Lensman series so I can't look it up!

Even if I'm wrong, thanks for the reminder. I should read my way through the Lensman series again...
Okay,

Some great answers :clappurple: but not where I was trying to lead you. :phew: The Sci-fi Virgil who inspired Virgil Tiberius' first name is from a 1960's English series . - 7 main characters, 5 of them brothers! :cheer:

The second Virgil is/was a real life spacefaring human, and it was he who gave the immortal quote I, as an engineer - and a surgical patient, love so much. :yay:

Hope this helps.
F-A-B ....F-A-B...lol

and the next girl sheepdog we have will be named Penelope....hints enough?
Still no idea on the fictional Virgil. The real life space faring Virgil must be Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom. (I collect sci fi books, hubbie collects astronaut DVDs) The only quote I remember is "the conquest of space is worth the risk of life", which proved to be eerily prophetic in his case.
Carl should be very impressed. I'll let him tell you what the quote is.

Bingo, :excited: you have the correct real life Virgil, a true hero of the American Apollo program. His sacrifice saved the lives of many astronauts who have come since. Also well quoted but not the one for which he is most often remembered. When touring a plant which was making a number of the Apollo components he wanted to impress the importance of quality in the components the workers were building and told them "Do good work"! :rimshot:

Okay, one more hint on the Sci-fi series, think "super-marionation", an altruistic rescue organization and the pilot of a large utility craft.

I'll post the answer later if no one gets it with this BIG hint.
Okay,

So Virgil Tiberius' first name comes from Virgil Tracey, pilot of International Rescue's Thunderbird 2 in the Gerry Anderson's show Thunderbirds. Thunderbird 2 was one of the neatest concepts and shaped craft ever!! I grew up loving this show and still watch reruns - got to get the DVDs. Then they brought out a feature film based on the show a couple of years ago. Our two footers and Michele bought it for me for Christmas when it came out on DVD!!

I guess it was never very popular in North America but I would have expected one or two of our English forum members to have come up with it - then again it has probably lost much of it's appeal there as well. Just an old fart re-living his long lost childhood.

Thanks, this thread has been fun.
