adult sheepdog adoption

Hi I was at the local animal shelter today and saw an oes male he is still young about 2 1/2 to 3 years. The poor baby looked rather funny as he was shaved except for his head and very very skinny I asked a few questions at the shelter about were he came from and if he got along with other dogs. The people at the shelter weren't sure about the temperment he was friendly when i walked up to his kennel, but they didn't know about how he was with other dogs. I came home a of course called the shelter right away and told them I wanted to adopt him. But he has to stay until at least tues. in order to be dipped he is being treated for mange, they are trying to put some weight on him too, he is all skin and bones. Anyway does anyone have any idea how they oes get along with other dogs I have both large and small and they like other dogs and love to play!! Keep your fingers crossed that i will be able to adopt this one!!

Sheepdogs get along with other dogs pretty much the same way as other dogs get along with other dogs. It all depends.
GOOD LUCK and please keep us posted.

Hi again the shelter has said that I will be able to take the sheepdog home in a week, he needs one more mange treatment. I have named him Gabriel. The shelter is across the road from where I work so I can go by everyday and start to bond with him. I had him out to walk around today and he seemed fine around the other dogs that were in their kennels. I was told that Gabriel is an escape-artist and will push the latch up with his nose, it's a good thing I keep my gates padlocked. I will keep you updated after Gabriel comes to his new home. :)
Hi, Trish again it's official now Gabriel is now my very own baby. ( I have paid my adoption fee.) He will be coming home next week, the shelter requires that all adult animals be neutered before they are adopted. My own Vet. works will the shelter on their spay & neuters so she will be doing Gabriel surgery. His appointment is for the 25 and I can pick him up on the 26 knowing Dr. Debbie like I do she may want to keep him another day to give him healing time before he meets his brothers and sisters, the welfare of the animal is most important to her(that's why we all love her so much)
I have been going everyday to visit & bond with Gabriel, I think I will have a lot of work, but fun work on by hands with him. I don't think he has been physically abused as in beaten or hit but very neglected. He will let me but a training collar on him, and doesn't pull that much on the lead but doesn't seem to have ever heard the word SIT & of course I haven't really had the chance to walk him very far just in the small area at the shelter. He wants the other dogs to play with him if they seem friendly and he loves to be brushed even though he only has fuzz on his body now, his ears and muzzle are still very matted (they feel like thick felt, with a few dread-locks hanging down. The shelter said his whole body was like that. Dr. D's office will finish shaving him for me & I have been taking my scissors and whacking away.
Sorry this has ran on so long. I just wanted want to share my excitement about the "new baby". I have also ordered some books one on all breed grooming, one on OES, one on adopting adult shelter dogs, but I know I will be here asking maybe begging for advice.
PS When Gabriel comes home, puts on a few pounds and his hair grows back I sure you will see him is brags, he is going to be a beaut. :D Trish
Hi Trish,

Congratulations on your new "baby". Gabriel is very lucky to have you and I know that you are going to love being owned by an OES. My baby will be 1 year old at the end of the month and it's hard to remember her not being here. Let us know how it goes when he finally comes home.

Good luck!

Ann & Phoebe too!
Gabriel is home at last, he had to be shaved so looks like a big spotted poodle. I think he is somewhat embaressed by his new do, and his over all condition is so what run down, but his heartworm test came back negative!! Great news! He is a real sweetie. Gets along with his canine brothers and sisters, not to fond of the cats but leaves them alone when I tell him to. All he needs now is lots of love, some good food and some vitamins and he is getting all that. I'll try to put up his pics. I hope to get to know all you fellow sheepie(owners/parents) Trish
Hi
I am looking for an adult OES to rescue. I have just lost my OES of thirteen years and miss her dearly. I live in N.E. Pennsylvania. Hope someone can help me. Thanks
Hi Trish....WELCOME :)
I am Vero from Lima, Peru.....joining the forum is the best thing I could do...down here I don`t have many info on OES since not many are around, and this place has done me and Pisco very good.
Looking foward to more comments on Gabriel.....
Since Trish wrote that in September of 2002 has she posted much since? Guess I should go look, huh?
I hope things worked out....
Hi Debbie,

I am sorry to hear about your OES girl. I know there is the www.neoesr.org I don't know how far it is from where you live. I know there is also a rescue site called www.petfinder.com. I hope this gets your search started. Good luck.
Hi Stormi,
Thanks for the info. I did try petfinder.com and have an application in for a 10 month OES named Misty. I will let you know what happens. Thanks again.......Debbie
I realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyy want an oes, but I can't afford it............. if anyone has a little oes at 2-9 months please email me back about it at adorable_sheng@yahoo.com
Dear Guest,

Please consider adopting a rescue- you will find that many adoption fees are more budget friendly than getting a new puppy which often runs around the 800-1000 mark, depending on where you are. Also keep in mind that Sheepies are big dogs, which means a lot of food, and vet care can be spendy too. Please think carefully about your decision, and let us know how it goes!

Karen :)
