Just got SamSun out of the Kennel

Hi everyone,
We just got back from our 5 day vacation in the mountains. I picked SamSun up from the Kennel around 6pm tonight. He seems to be acting funny and I can't remember if he acted this way last time he had to stay away from us. This is the first time I have taken him to this particular kennel. I was kinda perturbed because he STINKS!! I don't know if she let him play out in the rain this week or what. He is moping around the house, sleeping and just seems real sad. He also keeps making this strange coughing/choking noise like he has something in his throat. Do you think this is normal behavior?? Thanks for your replies! :)

My kennel told me it was normal for them to be very tired when they come home due to the stress of being away and being around other dogs. But coughing is not normal for dogs and what you've described sounds like it could be kennel cough. Sometimes that clears up, sometimes it requires antibiotics. I would call your Vet tomorrow. . .
Take his temperature. Normal is 101 to 102.

He may have picked up a virus. Upper respiratory infections are common in kennels. Most are self limiting, some are really scary. Even with the kennel cough vax, there are other forms. All the barking he may have done in the kennel actually allows the virus better access to the throat........DUH! Their mouth is open and their throat is dry from barking. Actually the temp may be normal but rise if a bacteria infection sets in.

Antibiotics are not always given if the vet feels this is what he has. They want the dog coughing to get rid of the crud in the lungs. My vet gives the antibiotics. Don't let your dog get chilled or overly hot. Don't excercise. Right now he needs his doggie bed and you close by for mental support.

Brush him out, don't bathe him until you can get him to vet tomorrow.

On the bright side, he may have just barked himeself hoarse and is so pooped out he just needs rest. Provide lots of water and if he likes broth, give him some. He may not eat, but he needs his moisture.

When we had to leave Barney at a kennel last year for 2 weeks, he acted the same way when he came home (minus the coughing). I think we were boring compared to the exciting life of playing with a million dogs each day. Plus, I think he was really tired. He was back to normal in about 2 days.
If the cough stays, definitely take him to a vet.
Oh, and we specifically ask for Barney to be bathed on the last day of being kenneled so he is sure to smell nice!
Good luck, hope he is okay.
I just wanted to say "thank you" again to everyone who responded to my topic on SamSun. He is feeling much better today. He still stinks but I can tell he feels much better. LOL!!
