Best publication for OES (our first)?

We will be picking up our first Sheepdog next week. We currently own two Shelties. Can anyone suggest what they think is the best overall book on Sheepdogs? I am sure there are several, but it looks like there are many veterans of the breed here that may know some of the better ones. Thank you so much in advance.

We have "The Complete Old English Sheepdog" by Christina Smith. It is getting old -published 1993. It goes alot into the bloodlines of kennels around the world - the author is a breeder originally from England, now in the US. Over half the book is various kennels and breeders around the world, but the pictures are awesome!
There is good info on the history of the breed, breed standards and personality, and a good section on grooming with step - by- step pictures. (Although not as good as the posting on this forum with pictures!)

I would like to hear from others too - I need to get an updated book.

( I have a cool magazine book published by BowTie Inc. about Bassets, and the Westie one is excellent too. I called them and an OES edition is not planned for release this year. If they do later, I definitely will get it. They are very accurate for each breed and make a good read too. They are from the same editors as Dog Fancy magazine.)
We have three sheep too. How does your sheepie react with them? And chickens?
Depends on the type of book you want, most are on the breed and history, the one mentioned above is a great "the complete old english sheepdog". Another great one if you can get your hands on one is "The Old English Sheepdog" by "Ann Davis (Arch)", excellant one too. There is a lot around on the breed. There 2 of my favourites.

However if you want more and in great detail about the breed, including history, training, and detailed grooming, trimming, clipping, bathing, drying and all over general coat care then one of the best is -

"Care and Grooming Of Old English Sheepdogs" by "Monique Carriere". It covers so much, just about everything and is the most detailed book I have ever read on general coat care & Information on OES.

Very hard to get now, but you might be able to seek out one in a 2nd hand book shop, if you are lucky, as it has been out of publication for quite awhile. :D
To cmphoto:

Our previous OES, Oliver was great with the sheep. He had his herding certificate thru AHBA. We stopped competing after that, we were more interested in the practical uses of herding. We have a 25 ewe flock and having a herding dog really helps. Especially when they lamb and we grow to over double that size for a while! 8O

Bart is new - a 3 yr old rescue. He has great interest in the sheep, and we
plan on working on his training when the weather cools down. Too hot now to work the sheep that hard (with a wild rookie dog like Bart).

3 sheep is a perfect number - in fact 3 sheep is the preferred number for the basic level herding trials. Have fun!

I completely agree! That book is excellent and very informative. I've had that book for sometime.
Two relatively current publications I like:
Old English Sheepdogs; Joan Hustace Walker; 1999 Barron's Educational Series. ISBN 0-7641-0735-6, Includes information about Old English Sheepdog Club of America, and extensive bibliography.

A New Owner's Guide to Old English Sheepdogs; Marilyn Mayfield; 1999 T.F.H. Plublications. ISBN 0-7938-2795-7.
HA HA! When I first read your post I thought you asked for the best possible LOOK on Old English Sheepdogs!!!  I was picturing weird poodle cuts, everything imaginable! I like the kennel club book on Old English written by Ann Arch. BUT I'm sure the "best" book out there is an entire library collection! You'll have your hands full of grooming with two shelties and an OES! :D

BTW your puppy is sooo photogenic - beautiful pictures.
That's the problem you start with one book and the collection seems to grow and grow 8) I love searching through 2nd hand book shops and anything with an OES on it I seem to buy, even Kids books, latest aquisition is "John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat", it's a childrens book but the illustrations are just beautiful in it of John Brown the Sheepie.
