Willy Wonka 1971 (or Charlie 2005) and the Chocolate Factory

Let me start by saying that I have not seen Johnny Depp's 2005 version of the "Chocolate Factory." When it came out I found it really hard to believe that anyone would remake this movie.

First off, I thought that Gene Wilder was just perfect in this role.
Secondly, what could possible need to be retold about this story?

After reading some of the comments here and over at IMDB, I am inclined to see this movie.

Anyone care to offer an opinion?

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one of my all time favorite books. I never understood why in the Wilder version, they had to change the title in the first place to make it Willy Wonka. I later read it was because Wilder needed to be the main character in the movie.

I loved the remake. It was much darker and felt like the book much more than the first one. The story revolved around Charlie, just like the book. They even sang the same songs that were in the book. I loved the Tim Burton spin on things and modern special effects really enhanced it. Johnny Depp was an excellent, wacky chocolatier. The first time I saw this version it was at the IMAX too, which really was an awesome experience!
I don't like either of the movie versions - loved the book though!
I've seeen both and don't really understand the hype.

I didn't care for the first one, and like Ron, couldn't understand why it was re-made. I thougth Gene was fine.

The new one is kind of cool, and I think I enjoyed it more due to the specail effects, but I still don't think it a great movie. Not worth seeing twice and/or buying the DVD...which is how I gage them. Johnny Depp was OK, I guess, but the character itself is weird, so whoever plays him has to act weird.

But my 17 year old son absolutely LOVED it, went to see it at least 4 times and bought the DVD. Go figure.

For the love of Pete!! I was typing almost the exact same thing including opening day at the IMAX. This is starting to get scary!
I loved the book, I loved the original movie and I also loved the new version.
I really wasn't planning on seeing it, I didn't wnt to ruin my memories of the original, I didn't think Depp could possibly pull it off, and for a long time I would say I can't stand Johnny Depp.

However, my kids wanted to see it, so we rented it when it came out on dvd, and I must admit, I loved it. I even think Johnny Depp did an excellent job.... LOL We actually bought the movie....
I didn't read the book, but I absolutely loved the first one. I thought Gene Wilder was so perfect for the part. I liked the remake too, also saw it in IMAX so that was cool, Johnny Depp really irritated me but I love Tim Burton and his twist made it worthwhile for me.

If we weren't like a year and a half apart, it's like we were separated at birth. ;)
The original is my all time favorite move to watch when I stay home sick. I also liked the new one. It seemed to have a little more innuedo type humor and Jonny Deep does a good job acting very strange. The only thing that creeped me out in the new one were the umpaloompah(s). I have this thing about clones. Call me wierd.
I absolutely loved the original Gene Wilder version and originally thought why remake something so terrific? Then hearing that Johnny Depp & Tim Burton would be involved, I had to go see it on opening day.

The new movie was interesting in another viewpoint sense, but I hated Johnny Depp's role in it. I don't think he pulled it off and was rather annoying as WW vs. the twisted sweetness that Wilder brought to the movie. I guess Johnny Depp's role was truer to the book, but Wilder made the story become so magical & endearing to me. Plus I also hated that they only had one individual Ooompa Looompa and just CGI multiplied him.

I'm a huge Johnny Depp fan from Ed Scissorhands to Ed Wood so it's really hard for me to give him a bad review.

So, Ron, if you're really that enchanted with the original movie, I would say you will be disappointed.

Music score was good though, typical Danny Elfman.
I completely agree with Ron!

I can not see myself seeing any other version other than the original. Gene Wilder is the ONLY person/actor I could have seen playing this role. There is a huge cult following and the movie is SUCH a classic. I love every minute of it!

Because of my older brother, I was subjected to seeing this movie QUITE often growing up, and memorized all of the songs, scenes, etc....

I do think Johnny Depp is an incredibly gifted actor, but I still don't see it ever comparing to the original.

I never read the book.

And ya know......I would love to grab at one of those huge gummy teddy bears, or the mushrooms filled with icing.....YUMMMMYYYY!!!!

What would you do if that REALLY existed???? :excited:
Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka reminded me of Michael Jackson 8O
CREEPY!!
