Today I Bit The Bullet

Today I bit the bullet and decided that it's time I clip my own dog. So I went out and bought an Oster Golden A5 (there goes my mortage payment hehehe) and got to it..

It was a beautiful sunny day, wonderful breeze, so I decided to do it in the yard. Murphy was good as gold.. he sat, stood or laid for 2 hours.

I will let you guys be the judge of my first clip job and any constructive critisim (sp) would be greatly appreciated.

The was the "professional job" that was done in April..it will take practice to get this good.

I really didn't know where to start.. so I started on the back and worked my way down his back legs.. then I did his chest and front legs.. then his belly.. I saved the head for last... I cut it to short.. I think. The hardest part was the feet.. it was hard getting between the toes. I cut him to close in some spots on the chest.. any suggestions on what I should use for clipper rash?

All in all I think I did an OK job.. I know he must feel better.. it's been very warm her...

My next purchase will be a grooming table.. My back is KILLING me from bending over... gonna go and take some Advil.

Brenda.

I think you did a great job, and personally I think they look silly with the body shaved and left longer on the head, so I think your hair cut job looks better than the groomers :)
Bren...sorry, but I had to laugh. Not because of the job you did, but just the look on his face......lol....

feet are the hardest....youll get it.....or not.....but he wont care....I mean, really, look at Panda's hairdo's.....she still loves me, and Im the queen of hack :D

Nice job and I know he feels better!!!!
I think you did a great job - congrats on your first shave - I wouldn't have known it was the first!
Stac.. I MSN'd you this morning before I started for moral support... then I said oh well.. and went ahead..

Darcy.. Murphy always has that look on his face, like someone beat him.... it's just that most times, you can't see it cause of the hair.
HAHAHAHAhahahahahah

The first pic (with hair) he looks so happy, then he looks so sad and embarrassed! LOLOLOL

Ok, but you did a GREAT job!

I'm impressed with the feet.

As far as clipper rash, are you sure that he's got an irritation rather than just his pink skin? I've clipped right to the skin with the #10 blade and not gotten any kind of irritation. Are you sure he didn't get burned? Ya gotta keep the clipper blade cool to keep it sharp. I burned Jakes ummm his errr private area with my first set of cheapo clippers... I felt so badly every time he licked I just had to get the A5.

Since it's closely shaved maybe a little neosporin or other antibiotic ointment will soothe it, since he can't lick there, I think.
you have done a great job. he will be so much cooler :clappurple:
Congratulations! I think he looks terrific (although perhaps a bit annoyed?)

I've been working on Maggie with cheap clippers and she looks awful. The paws are definitely the hardest and hers were matted straight to the skin -- pure felt. I have only done one leg at a time because the clippers get too hot. I've now ordered the A5s which should help. Right now, she's got three shaved legs and the rest fuzzy. She looks ridiculous. I also was concerned about the pink skin plus I clearly nipped her in a few places.

I think you did a great job. I'm very impressed. What blade size(s) did you use?
I used a 10 all over...

Ron, you are probably right.. maybe it's just pink skin. The clippers did get hot.. I kept on stopping so they could cool down and kept them well oiled.

Thanks everyone.. I am so please with myself..

Next up.... Dudley .... he is to funny, when I started the clippers, Dudley high tailed it in the house to my bedroom and hid in the corner by the dresser... didn't see him till Murphy was finished.
He looks great!

I am so impressed with his feet. I can never do them like that.
You did a wonderful job!! :clappurple:
You did great and Murphy looks wonderful! Sad, but wonderful!

The feet are always the hardest to clip on Drez, too. She doesn't like her feet played with, so it's a real test of wills!
The look on his face is priceless. Like now he feels naked-- for real!
I think you did a great job. Murphy will be so much more comfortable now! (once he gets over being naked)
Oliver was sooooo embarrassed the 1st time I cut him (scissors clipped too, so he wasn't totally naked) that he hid when Todd came home from work! We had shown him up to a year old, so he went from a real long coat to a short one in one day.
After the initial shock, he came to love getting clipped. It had to feel so good, and he didn't get as dirty outside on the farm.
He looks fine. As to where to start, yeah gads. Me too! The only dog who cooperated totally was Maudie. She'd stand for hours and wouldn't balk at the feet. It's been down hill from there.

Ofen I start on top of the head and make the initial clip all the way to the bum and then work off that line. That leaves the feet for the end. Not good. I watched a PetsMart groomer shave a chow-chow and she started with the feet! Get the worst over first, I guess.

Good first time job!

I think he looks great!

Get a can of that blade cooling spray. You just spray some on the blade and voila - it's no longer hot!
Yes, the blade cooling spray really works. We use it with our sheep shears. I know the sheep appreciate it!
I will have to invest in some of that spray.. the clippers sure did get hot.

Well tonight we went to the park all the dogs laughed at him.. I had to take him to the Dairy Queen to cheer him up...

I think Dudley has been laughing at him to behind our back.... the last laugh will be on Dudley.. it's his turn this weekend.
