Poor Chester... 18 Month Old in Lawrenceville, Georgia

Chester is a sheepie-boy in Georgia who's waiting for someone to love him. NOT someone who will stick him in a cage in the backyard and neglect him again.

Notes: This is Chester, an 18mth male Old English Sheepdog. He is about 75lbs. Chester is good with older kids, cats and other dogs. Chester is housetrained and crate trained. Chester needs to know what it is like to be a part of a family. Here is what we know about his history: Chester was a stray at a local animal shelter in July of last year. At the time he was 6mths old and was adopted by a family who kept him outside in a tiny pen. Chester was not played with, taken to the vet or the goomers. He is covered in THICK, TIGHT, and heavy mats. Is there a groomer out there that can donate a groom for him? We don't think he will be very cooperative, as he has not been to one before, but that is just a guess. He is very sweet and loving, just needs to know he is safe. Chester will be gorgeous when he is cleaned up, and feel ALOT better. The picture is not of him, but of an OESD that looks just like him. We will get pics up soon. PLEASE E-MAIL ALL INQUIRIES TO: treasuredhollow@bellsouth.net If interested in adopting please submitt an application by clicking the link below.

awwww poor chester. I would go in there with my little pair of sciccors like I did to Allie if I could... lol
It is better than being hot and matted.
Thats so sad. What a cutie too! I wish I could take him home with me, but I got two already. What about a foster family? Or will he stay at the rescue?
They're getting Chester cleaned up/shaved down tomorrow. I was told that he had been groomed once in the 12 months the previous family had him... it was shortly after he was first adopted. They said his coat is like armor... they can't even get their fingers through it. Every sheepie should go out with an instruction manual on how to properly care for one!

He's with a rescue that is licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture according the the PetFinder shelter info so hopefully he'll get cleaned up, assessed and placed in a proper home... hopefully third time's a charm!

HI 8O
Hmmm...let me do some checking on Chester :lmt:
Lawrenceville is just a stones throw away...
Diane
Thanks, Diane. I was going to offer to pay for the grooming, but I see as I read Jaci's post that it is already being taken care of. Poor Boy. :(

Let us know what you find out, please. :?
All dogs should be part of the family and loved.

Okay that's not a reality for many dogs but wish it were.

I hope this guy gets the loving home he deserves..please keep us updated!

Marianne and the boys
Hi everyone,

I talked with this kind lady this morning and he's going for shots and tests tomorrow. I also gave her Ingrid's number and e-mail and offered whatever help they need. He's been outside for a year.

Zach
Being outside in Atlanta year around ... not fun for man nor sheepie
Chester is going to the Petsmart in midtown Atlanta
on Ponce De Leon Avenue for a much needed groom Sat AM.
I thought I might buzz over & look into those big brown eyes
& tell him he has this Forum in his corner now :hearts:
No more alone in the backyard again
Diane
Diane, please give Chester a big hug and a kiss from me!!!
Zach... hoping he will be HW- ! If you hear back about the results will you let me know? I didn't ask Jennifer for an update because they have enough to do but I'd REALLY like to know.

Thanks Diane! Please let me know how if you happen to stop by to see him? I bet he'll act like a puppy once they get him shaved down and clean again. (Your description of what a mat on a sheepie feels like would be very ouchie ! 8O  8O ) I hope it's not too stressful for him :( ... everything is all new and scary. I can't imagine the sad existance he had.  Grrrrr...
I wish Georgia wasn't so far away. If it would be just 4- 5 hours closer. He really looks like a handsom boy. Poor lost soul, he will feel like a million buck after his shave. Hope all his other tests a good.
I just seen there is another one in a shelter down in Georgia. :o
:clappurple: Diane went to visit Chester at PetSmart today and she took some wonderful before pictures. http://www.pomeroys.com/EmmaDarby/Rescu ... hester.htm That's a sheepie-smile if I ever saw one! She said he was soooo sweet and wiggled all over. He also has a tail. And surprisingly he didn't smell that bad despite the horrible mats...

Quote:
The skin on his neck looked very good!
Breath didn't even smell that bad ;)

He is with K-9 Rescue League in Lawrenceville, Georgia 770-714-2880.
Remember the picture shown on PetFinder is currently NOT Chester...

Diane said she would try to get some after pictures to share too. I bet he'll feel soooo much better. Yay for Jennifer with K-9 Rescue League for fostering this sheepie! And thanks so much for taking the day to get these pictures to share with us Diane!
Jaci
The pictures are great. He looks like such an exuberant sweet cuddly guy. To see his beautiful tail tucked so tight between his legs is sad. I really look forward to more good news about Chester.
Poor guy, he must feel better after getting groomed. I hope he finds the wonderful home he deserves.
Diane also took "after" pictures of Chester and got some background info on this boy... http://www.pomeroys.com/EmmaDarby/Rescu ... hester.htm

It was said that Chester, formerly known as Chestnut, had been adopted from Animal Control a year ago. His new family was SUPPOSED to have him neutered but never followed through  He's to be neutered this week. He weighs 45 pounds... even though he needs to put on some weight, he will be a small sheepie. He's to be vet checked and HW tested soon too. Hoping all those mats protected him from the mosquitoes. :plead:

I think it will take some time and understanding to help this boy settle in. I can't imagine being left in a small kennel in the backyard for a year with little interaction. Some people are so stupid  Hope he finds a great home THIS time.

If you can help out OES Rescue or a rescue in your town, please do. You can make a big difference in the life of a neglected, abused or simply homeless pet.

Any news on Chester?

Jaci
Hey Jaci... thanks for the link! I am certain he feels so much better now with his new haircut!! I will keep my eye on him...

I wish we had room for him at our house, I always have room in my heart, but have to think wisely for our family overall.

In conversation yesterday, I heard great feedback and well adjustment on our friend from TN.... WHAT A RELIEF!!! :)

Yeah, it has to be the right time for everyone involved. Self control is a good thing.

YESSSS! :yay:
Thanks for the update.
I've been wondering and hoping since I last got a brief bit of info.
Thanks so much Alissa. That is super news and I appreciate hearing. :D
Jaci
This is what happens when the shelters adopt these dog out to just anybody. So many times we contact the shelter about an oes that is up for adoption and they tell us that they want to find a home for the dog or they just don't like rescues.
There are lots of shelters that think that rescues make money on the dogs we get, well, they have no idea.
Sometimes it is the other way around, if they have an oes pup, they will never let us have it, they charge up to $500. for adoption fee. Talk about making money.
This is so sad, because the dogs have to suffer.
Our dogs only go to homes that had oes before. I am still in contact with families that adopted dogs from us 3 years ago and if anything should happen, I am here to take the dog back.
Ingrid
South East OES Rescue
Hi Ingrid-
The rescue that now has this sheepie would love to find an sheepie-experienced foster... I would think they might also release him to OES rescue but I've not asked.

Chester's been hw tested and is negative, he's been brought up to date on his shots and he is now neutered. Jen says...

"...He really needs work on leash walking and his manners..."

Would it be okay for them to contact you to discuss this?
Jaci
BTW- I KNOW... I've come upon this before. You almost need a middleman or go-between to overcome the shelter/rescue hurdle you've described.
That would be fine Jaci.
All our foster homes are filled, but we can work it out somehow.
Ingrid
Thanks Ingrid! :D
I'll pass along the contact information for Southeast OES Rescue now.
Jaci
Let me know if I can help in anyway Jaci!
Thanks Alissa :D
I think Jen is hoping she can find a foster for him locally... she would like to see this through. I did pass the info along though so she has it if she should need it.
Jaci
Jaci-
Any news on Tess?
Thanks for all you do!!!
Just to clarify... I don't do much... only on the rescue fringe. I don't follow all that I post here. :(

It was just posted on Tess' thread that she's going home today :D

Yeah for Tess!!!!!!!!!
Hey Jaci we are going to take Chester into our rescue.
Sue had talked to them and they let us have him as long as we pay for the vet bills and they were only $125. Sue said she would pay it.
I am working on finding a foster home inGa
Ingrid
Hi Ingrid (& Sue too!) ~
That is wonderful news! :clappurple: I think he'll have the best chance at becoming a good companion with a sheepie-savvy foster. After spending several months outside in the backyard, he'll require someone who is patient and loving and will again introduce him to the grooming process. This may also leave an opening and funds so Jen can help just one more dog in trouble this year or simply concentrate on some she already has. Sounds like a great arrangement all around! :D

Thanks so much for sharing the news, Ingrid! Best wishes to Chester on finding his new family.
Jaci
How awesome!!! Great news!

Thank you for helping this cutie pie!!!
I've just sent an email and filled out an application to adopt Chester. I'm looking for a dog and I have had 2 OES. He needs a home and I need a dog, seems like a perfect match!
HOW COOL!! Good luck! Keep us posted!
Did you send your email to Ingrid or the K9 Rescue League?
I think I sent it to Ingrid/K-9. I just spoke w/ a woman named Jennifer in Dallas, GA who has Chester. Not sure what her connection is to the K-9 Rescue folks. I am assuming we are speaking of the same dog. I'm going to meet her and Chester on Saturday.
I got an email from Jennifer Bankston and she said she had an application from a single lady in Atlanta, fenced yard and she had oes before. Is that you or somebody else?
Ingrid
Yes, that's me, Lisa. I'm going to meet Jennifer and Chester at the Pet Smart on Saturday. I'm looking forward to meeting him.
Wonderful, Lisa, thanks
Hope the two of you will be a match. Jennifer will keep me in the loop.
Ingrid
I wanted to update everyone on Chester. I brought him home Saturday and he is doing really well! He is very, very sweet but understandably a little skittish and unsocialized. He looks healthy but could stand to gain a few pounds (lucky thing, wish that was my predicament). Jennifer and I agreed upon a 2 week trial/foster type situation and it looks like it's going to work out. The big test will be making sure he will get along with my other 2 dogs that I co-parent, 1 is a 3 yr old OES and the other an 8yr husky/lab mix, both females. I'm going to introduce them all next weekend giving Chester (I'm thinking of changing his name to Beckham or Becks for short) a chance to adjust to the new surroundings. Stand by for updates and thanks to everyone for helping to take care of this guy - he is 100% Sheepie in everything including personality. God, I love these dogs, they're so goofy!
Congrats to you and Chester.
I hope he gets along with the other dogs!
I hope you & Chester will be a perfect match! :D
Congrats!! Keep us posted!
Yea! Keeping my fingers crossed that everyone gets along!
This is great! Hope it works and please keep us posted! (pictures!!!)
I like the name Beckham a lot and I hope everything is going well!
Hi everyone,

It is official. Beckham is a permanent member of my family. He's laying on his bed right now next to me chewing on a rawhide with all of his stuffed toys laying around him. We're going to start some beginning training in a couple weeks but he knows sit and down so somewhere along the way he did get some remedial training. He's learning to walk well on the leash and LOVES to go for rides in the car. He sits in the back like a human and just checks everything out. I'll try to get some pics up soon. I have to figure out how to make my jpegs small enough to upload.
I use iphoto on a mac, any suggestions? Thanks again and I'm happy I found this space as I am a true blue Sheepdog fan.

Take care and pictures soon, I promise!

Lisa
Hi,
Open Iphoto
Click on picture you want to reduce.
Go up to file
click on export
a new window will open
click on the little circle next to "scale images no larger than".
not sure how small you need it(?).
I always type 300 in the box.
Hope this helps
Can't wait to see photos! sue
Or another way, (that I always use because I need simple ) is to upload them to the photo gallery and then let oes.org resize them for you.

Then following the instructions in the sticky to load them into your post.
Thanks Sue. I'll take some pics tomorrow.
Thanks Nicole!
That is fantastic news! :clappurple:
A big thanks to Jen for saving him and to you for giving him the loving home he deserves.
