New 10 month old OES pestering very old cat

Five days ago we rescued a homeless OED here in Mexico where we now live. Peluche (in Spanish means stuffed toy) is beautiful and sweet and very very loving. He minds me pretty well. But, I am worried about how he is reacting with our 21 year old cat, Amazon.

He wants to play so badly and my two poodles, Simba and Shakira won't play, so he goes to see if the cat will play. Since our cat doesn't nip at him, he keeps going after her. He pushes her with his nose and she tries to run away, and he keeps following her. Yesterday, he had his mouth around the back of her neck. She is skin and bones (has a tumor) and will not be around too much longer. She is just too frail to protect herself and I don't want her to be scared and maybe get hurt.

I watch them like a hawk and if I see Peluche bothering Amazon, I firmly tell him NO. Sometimes I have to say NO several times.

Has anyone had a problem like this? Any advice is really appreciated.

Also, I would like advice on how to stop Peluche from jumping up on me and others.

AND , , , , Can someone tell me how to upload my Peluche's photo?

Welcome to the forum!

I don't have experience with having a cat, but I know that a lot of our members have both an OES and a cat, so I'm sure they'll jump in with good advice.

Your picture is uploaded just fine and is approved!
Directions for uploading and using photos are located in the FAQ section of the forum; here:

I'm looking forward to hearing all about Peluche as you guys become accustomed to one another!

Again, Welcome!
Hi and Welcome!

We had 2 cats before we got Barney, our dog. Luckily for us all of the cats are young so they just run away when the dog wants to play' with them.

Can you make a space for Amazon that only he can get to (that Peluche cannot reach)? That might be the best option.
Thank you Ron for the welcome. I copied the text below but don't know where to put it to put Peluche's photo into messages. Can you please help?

Thanks,
Gail

Oh, he is SO BEAUTIFUL!!
I think you mean you want to have the little picture under your name. If that's right, you want to follow the instructions for:
"How to create a thumbnail and use it as your Avatar"

(You've already created the thumbnail, so now you just need to follow the second half of the instructions.)
Hi,

Welcome to the forum and I agree he's just beautiful.

I have several cats as well as three dogs, two are Old English. I'm not sure how old your boy is but like all Old English they have a strong herding instinct and cats can find this annoying. In his exhuberant play he may accidently injure your kitty, so perhaps have a room which is off limits to him?
21 is the same age as one of my previous cats when he passed and I agree, that is old and they enjoy their quiet time.

One thing I found very helpful is putting up baby gates so the cats can have a quiet room and some peaceful time. If your old boy no longer has the energy to jump over things you can break out a small portion at the bottom so he can slip through to get away from the dog. I find the barrier works great and the majority of the time, the dog never think about jumping over it.

I hope you keep returning and let us know how it goes.

Since your cat is an older cat, and ill... I think it's important to continue trying to train the dog, however, the best solution is to make sure the cat has places it can go that the dog cannot get to. A baby gate is a great idea to give your cat even just one room where it can rest and be in peace.

Welcome to the forum, and good luck! :)
After reading all the responses about a baby gate, we decided to get a small pen to enclose Amazon. This way she can hear and see us, but Peluche can't bother her. We have an open floor plan, so we hope this will work.

Thanks again,
Gail
Welcome! Your picture of Peluche is adorable.
How is Amazon doing? The open floor plan does make it tough to make a safe zone for her. I hope she does well in her "safe pen".
