is licking a sign of affection?

I often wonder if Panda's licking is a sign of affection rather than just trying to get my lotion or sweat off....what do you all think?

Of course it is affection, what's better then a wet sloppy sheepie lick Kiss
I hope so! It is with Luke and Daisy, with Rosco it's more like he's smelling you to see if you've eaten something and didn't offer him any
I like to think that they are showing affection :D Sadly, however, I think they are trying to get something tasty.

Annie rarely gives kisses so I guess I don't really smell good to her either. Foz now gives TONS of kisses instead of biting.
I think it depends where the licking is taking place... and I swear I mean that in the cleanest way possible.
I had a hard time answering this! Sometimes the licking is to get the lotion or salt off as someone already mentioned. Other times it is to get my attention..........but every morning Simone and Jack each jump onto the bed and give me a few quick lip licks (bleech!) If I ask for chin or cheek kisses instead, nope. I've some to think they are mimicking my husband's early morning kisses.

Other times when I'm snuggling one of the sheepies and plant a smacker on top of their head, they feel they must recipricate.

Pyrs don't kiss, it is below their dignity. Oh, Sam would muffle a bit, but that was it. For years Paige wouldn't let me kiss her head...now it is tolerated.

I voted affection. Maybe it's a mix - but they wouldn't lick anyone they didn't like!!!!
I think yes...but it is also a sign of submissiveness.

And of course the licking of salt....the furkids love to lick Billy after he's been outside working and sweating. YUCK!!!

Pepsi loves giving me kisses. Rags won't kiss me unless I ask, but she licks Billy all day long.

Peanut has bad breath so I don't let him lick me very often.
Kisses, tasting, slobbering, sharing the slime etc....

Some licking is a sign of submission too.

Dancer gives lil butterfly kisses, not slobbery ones, she's so gentle and ladylike LOL

Sky slops right up the side of your head, and anything else her tongue meets... your foot, your arm, hand, the remote control you're holding...whatever. LOL

Panda just kisses out of excitement, when she greets someone. Her kisses are really full force, lol, she can knock you over with a kiss. LOL
Maggie licks very enthusiastically. She likes to give a head to toe of everyone she meets. She also runs up to lick someone (anyone!) when excited. Sometimes, she comes up and gives long, slow, thoughtful licks.

Chummie licks only rarely and it is very slow and dainty and careful like she is communicating something deep and meaningful.
If licking is affection, then Sofa must REALLY love me... LOL
Yuki doesn't care much for mommy, but she licks me whenever she wants something. It's her way of being nice.

Other times, she's licking in hopes there's a little dinner you forgot to wipe off yoru face!
YEP.... lol
Initally, it's a calming signal. Just like yawning and tail wagging are forms of destressing themselves. But, I think after a while they learn that we like it and see it as affection and use it to there advantage.
Duch is a kinda hit and miss girl like where ever her tongue lands :D her favorite place is my ears tho. (Honest I do keep them clean :excited: )
