questions about 4 mo. old sheepie?

Hi,
I was just wondering if my 4 mo. old sheepie is ever going to listen and come when called! :o If he's ever loose in our yard and I call him he just stares at me like I'm stupid. It's driving me crazy. how can we teach him to come?

Have you taken him to a puppy class yet? Those are the sorts of things that they'll go over there and it really helps to socialize him too. At 4 months though, they're still crazy little monsters though. Clyde was selective hearing at that age. Heck, who am I kidding? They all selective hearing even now!

Hey, as a Michigan person, are you interested in cming down for the picnic we're planning this month?
Is she food motivated? How about training with a cookie or treat? Say "Come! get your cookie" (or whatever your treating phrase is). Also, Perhaps stop giving treats except when preceeded by the "Come!" command.

Eventually, everytime you say "Come!" he'll think "Ohh boy, it's cookie time!" and come running.

That's the theory, anyway.
Hi,

Here's what they do in puppy obedience classes...have a long leash ...least six feet in length. Pup is at the end of the leash..say pups name with lots of cheerfulness in your voice..________ Come! (Always say this in a nice voice and not ______ Come in a you'd better come here voice) This way pup associates it with a good thing. Small tug on the leash if necessary and pup runs over to you...have a treat in your hand which pup can view.

To perhaps be clearer on the intructions...you should walk the full length of the leash away from the pup. Kneel down and call puppy, have treat in full view. They come...lots of praise be consistent and do this for a couple weeks. Soon no leash is needed...eventually no treat..but just praise.

One previous trainer suggested I run the opposite way when one of my former sheepies was a runner. Instead of chasing after her..I was supposed to call her by name and not in an angry tone of voice and run the opposite way. It worked and she raced after me. Remember sheepies love to herd things.

Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

Our 5 month old also seems to have selective hearing when it comes to the word "come". If we follow it with "treat", he does come 99.9% of the time!
Sammy had selective hearing at 4 months and on occasions he still does but if he is in the yard and I want him to come I run in the direction I want him to go and he can't help himself he just has to follow :D

I've done some long lead training as suggested in a previous post and it is starting to help too.

We have a saying in our house now, "Will work for food"
I'm assuming the puppy isn't deaf. You'd be amazed how many people don't realize their dog has a hearing problem.......maybe not totally deaf, but some compromised hearing. At 4 months tho, it's probably puppy deafness.....selective hearing.
My Chauncey is 9 mos. and we've overcome many things. We've seen a significant improvement in the past month. We (I) forget that he is still a baby, actually probably interring the terrible 2's. Alot had to do with vinegar therapy ( spray bottle with vinegar/water mix ) he was a nipper. Now our current project is to come. This is difficult because unlike any dog I've ever met, he's not the least bit interested in treats. We've bought lots of neat ones...just not interested. We are now working more with the long lead. This seems to be slow but steady progress. One major problen is we don't have a fenced area. We have an acre but $7,000 isn't in this years budget. We are working as we did with our lab to teach him the boundry's. I'm really beginning to believe with Chaunce it's an age thing. Plus I've become a devote watcher of Dog Whisper. I've started being more dominant and he has become more lovable and snuggly.
Butterscotch, I have not had much time to play around on this site lately, but last heard the picnic was the weekend of the 29th? If it still is, we can nt make it, family reunion weekend in Jackson....But for the heck of it, where is it, incase I get sick of the family:)
