OES herd training for working dogs??

Hi, I've just rescued an 8 month old OES/Kerry Blue Irish terrier and love her dearly. She's cute, very friendly and soooo inteligent. She spent her 8 months being allowed to sleep on beds but as i'm asthmatic i had to stop her from doing so, it only took 2 days of saying no and she doesnt even try anymore. She knows exactly what i'm asking of her but she can be so stubborn. An OES wouldnt of been my first choice of companion but now i've spent 4 weeks with her wouldnt choose any other breed. I was told by the person i rescued her from that she is so hard to train, i havn't found that to be true as she picks things up very quickly. But she can be so willfull, she knows when i'm calling her and asking her simple things such as sit and such but a lot of the time she just stands there looking at me or pretending to be deaf. I know she knows whats being said as she responds so well to hand signals as well as voice commands but i'm wondering how i can break her out of her stuborness as it can be so infuriating as i know she understands. I'd like to train her for herding but as i'm not sure how to go about it or how old is too old for training I've probably missed the boat for her but i know that she would absolutley love it as much as i would. I suppose my question is, does anyone know how to go about finding a trainer for herding not just for Shama'n my puppy OES but also for me :) ok well this was just going to be an introduction of Shama'n and myself but i suppose i just love her too much :D
I hope someone can advise me on training..thanks
Mike and Shama'n

Welcome to the forum :)

As far as I know with herding, they just put them out there and see if they have any instinct for it first... I have no idea where you'd go from there, but I'm sure your local kennel club would have more info as to what activities are available in your area.

What an interesting mix, I'd love to see pics of her! :)
Hi WillowSprite, well i'll try and get a pic sorted soon, and yes Shama'n is absolutely Gorgeous with big floppy hairy ears, everyone awwww's at her.
Thanks i'll try asking around but as i live in a fairly counrtyfied place i'll even start walking her up through farms and see if there's any friendly farmers willing to chat :)
P.S..she isnt the normal OES coulering..she takes that from the kerryblue which is more of a bluey grey and i dont think she'll get as big as an OES female but only time will tell, her paws are pretty big compared to her size at the mo.
Thanks for the welcome.
I can't wait to see pictures and hear how her try at herding turns out. Good luck!
It is not too late to try herding. We had classes at our house for several years and it was a blast. We raise sheep, but I never had a clue about how to do herding. We started when our Ollie (OES) was about 5 yrs old with the classes - he learned so much and was much more helpful around the stock. We had an instructor come to our place and others came for the classes too. It was so cool seeing all the different herding and working breeds do their stuff.

You could put up a wanted sign at your nearest pet supply or farm store and see if there is anything offered near you. Or contact groups like ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America) or AHBA (American Herding Breed Assoc.) to see if there is anyone near you. We trialed through AHBA and got Ollie's HCT. Good luck! It's a lot of fun doing what your dog was meant to do, and great exercise for an energetic young dog.
OK, I see from another post of yours that you're from UK, so the groups I listed probably won't help!
There must be some equivalent type groups in your neck of the woods tho'!
