STAY command

| Well, Annie still hasn't learned this behavior, but Foz is getitng it some of the time. Usually when we're only in training mode. He hasn't gotten it yet in real life situations such as, please stay until I'm in the garage and then you can walk out.
The Petsmart trainer started us off with having the pup sit, saying "Stay" and immediately giving him a treat. This is because he has no idea what the word means. Then gradually you say "Stay" and move a step backwards and count a few seconds, say "Good Stay" and give a treat. Sometimes I try to do this with the two of them at the same time. Annie gets up right away and Foz is still sitting there waiting until I tell him to get up. Poor guy! And Annie is supposed to be showing him the ropes! |
 That is how it went when we tried to teach him with Koda around But that is good, although you think i could have figured that out. We never really had to teach Penny anything, she just wanted to please her mom and dad, it amazes me how smart she is. Al righ t i'll stop bragging now

| It also is very important to stop the exercise by giving your release command BEFORE the dog moves. For example - if you know your dog can only stay for 10 seconds, give the release command at 8 seconds and give tons of praise. They learn so much faster when they are successful and praised, rather than not successful. Always try and set them up for success. You can work on lengthening the amount of time they stay when they understand what you want. |

Thanks Becky & Miley Good quesiton, as this is a tough one to get right. You reward the stay, not the release. Keep the rewards coming, while the dog doesn't move. Then "release" and just walk away. |
