I spoke too soon...

so walter was chewing on something he wasnt supposed to have, and he looked pretty intent on keeping it so I went to trade him for one of his toys... but when i went to pick up his toy he thought i was going for what was in his mouth and he snarled and bit me! he didnt break skin, he actually stopped right away but i have two puffy scratches so it was definitely a bite
he knew he was in trouble and he immediately rolled on his back for his punishment (a flick on the nose and some yelling) then i dragged him downstairs into the laundry room, made him sit and go down then put up the gate so he didnt get the priviledge of sleeping where he wanted (which he had earned this past month)

im feeling pretty discouraged... this is the first sign of aggressive in 2 months.

do you think i handled this ok? should i take away more priviledges?

It sounds as tho Walter knew he was wrong. The behavior must be corrected when it happens. To take away more privileges won't mean anything because he won't know why. I would test him over and over again until you can take a steak from his mouth if needbe. How old is Walter? It sounds as tho this has been an issue before. You can try taking his food dish away once he has started eating to see how he will react. He should trust you enough to know that you will give it back. My pup, Bentley, tried this once with me when he was about 4 mo. old and I took the bone away and shook him by the scruff of the neck and told him he could not growl at me. After a few minutes I gave it back to him and them took it away again. He let me and has ever since. Sometimes it could be a safety issue and you need to get that dropped pill or whatever out of your pups mouth. Remember you are the alpha and let him know that won't be tolerated. Your handling of the situation sounds right. Good luck with this challenging situation.

Hi,

I like the advice given to you and while I know you'll be a bit hesitant about Lil Walty repeating this behavior with you, I would suggest you work with him on his food issue.

He has come a long way (remembering stories of his past misbehavior) and it could be he's still occasionally testing as he's still a teenager. Oh sheesh can they test!!!

If I get a chance I'll ask my trainer tomorrow if he has any other suggestions and get back to you.

Good luck!
Marianne
thanks for the advice guys, after sleeping on it i feel a bit better. i know that its my responsibility to be persistent in his training... i guess i assumed that he knew 'out' and was ok with giving things up (he was sooo good for 2 months), starting today we will be practicing everyday again.

i guess its time to take him out of punishment haha!
Hi Lil Walty's mom,

Strangest thing happened when I went to doggie obedience classes Wed - no one was there! When I returned home my friend whom has the same trainer said on my answering machine..oh darn I missed you - had a message to pass on to you. Oh well, I never had a chance to ask the question but will remember to do so next time I see him.
