Hates de-matting!!

AAH, what do I do? Huggs has mat-city on his legs and tummy tum (it can sneak up on ya once spring hitts huh??!!??)
We have been brushing weekly, making sure any little matting was dealt with, but reacently the tem has been in the upper 70's and awesome outside!! Huggs has gone winter cabin fever nutts once we let him out.. LOL so have the kids, they have been filthy!!
I try so hard to brush his legs (which are worst) and he cries and pulls them back. I cannot get him still very long, so I pick at it and pick at it.. Any suggestions??

Huggsmom I found a little trick for me that keeps Drake occupied while I groom him. I put peanut butter on a raw hide bone that has been knotted and make sure I get it in really deep so he is distracted from what I am doing. Drake has learned to love his bath and I can get through the whole blow drying and brushing process without any complaints. This is Drakes special treat for bathtime and he loves it. If huggs does not like peanut butter think of something else that can really distract Huggs. I would also maybe try and brush his legs more often for just a few minutes a day.Hope this helps 8)
I would recommend having his belly shaved (if he's not being shown). It doesn't make them look any different - I have the girls underarms and belly's shaved - as it is SOOOOO MUCH easier!

The legs are often the worst part - mine hate it too! Sometimes thinning shears work best to remove the larger matts (without making it look too "scissored").

I have also used those mat rakes - but they seem to hurt - so I like using a comb and/or pin brush and slicker brush.

Sydney and Presley hate having their legs done the most.

Good Luck!

I have had that problem with Pisco a lot.....but I solved it with a lot of patience :)......every time he wanted a petting or I wanted to pet him, I would hold his paws and stroke them with my hands and if I have the comb at hand I will pass it trough his hair without doing anything just a stoke with no hairs involved.....now it works wonders...every time I groom him he will put his paws in my lap so I stroke him a bit and then start unmatting.
I will try the pat the paws, the peanut butter in a hollow bone worked the other night.... he didnt seem to mind too much that I was brushing. I didnt focus too much or too long on paws or legs. He did keep trying to move his position so I would stop, Am I pulling too hard?? Am I too rough when I brush??

Intradan how do you find Drake is with blowdrying his hair? I have never done that with Dancer yet, I just let her air dry after a bath and I don't brush her till she's dry. She's never had a mat or really very much tangling, except around her butt, but I think I should get her used to the blow dryer even if she doesn't need it since she will need it for shows. Her first show is going to be the end of June by the way :)
Willowsprite Drake loves the hair dryer. When we first got Drake I would take Drake into the bathroom with me while taking a shower so Drake would not be alone with the kids. He stayed with me the whole time while in the shower and while I blew dry my hair and got ready. I now realize that this got Drake used to the bath and sound of the hair dryer. Now every time he hears the bath water running for the kids he thinks he should have a bath too. When I blow dry my hair he barks and jumps until I blow his hair. I also use the peanut butter trick and he now knows where I put it before the bath. Today I had to give Drake a bath because he ran across the wet concret that had been died red (boy my hubby had a fit he had been laying a walkway and the kids let Drake out) I had Drake bathed, combed and blown dry in 45 minutes. Also as far as the feet and bottom are concerned I do them a little at a time. I will brush Drakes feet a little then his back and then his feet again then his butt. I never brush or blow dry in any one place to long. What I mean is I try and not stay in the sensitive spots for very long. The spot Drake really hates is his chin. I also have Drake up on our sink which has a very long top. Make sure you have everything ready to go before hand. Today Drake was ready to go up on the the vanity before I even had him towl dried. I only wish my potty and teething problems have went so well 8) Hope this helps 8)
Thanks Intradan! I hadn't even thought of putting her up on the bathroom counter for grooming! That solves a lot.... I'm going to try Dancer's first blow drying after her bath tonight.
