washing walls and streaks

Okay I have fairly new paint on the walls, and one days I notice a greasy hand print.

The wall is in eggshell, and a coffee brown color. Paint is mid grade quality by General Paint.

Well the wall is completely streaked, and so I washed more and it streaked everywhere I washed. I washed with soapy water, I washed again in plain water...I can't get rid of the streaks.

They are driving me nuts, since the rest of the wall is untouched your eyes are drawn to it.

Do I need to repaint the entire wall? If it was flat I could spot paint, but because it's eggshell I need to do the whole wall....right???

or anything else I can do?

Try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser first. I use it on my walls and it's amazing the stuff that gets out.
Thanks, I can try that.

But does it leave streaks from wiping?

I think I just chose the wrong color, because if I was the other walls it doesn;t show the wipe marks. I also think I washed to quickly after, and the marks are permanent.
It pretty much, well, erases. I've never found it to streak anything but I don't know how greasy your walls are!
Is it streaks of something still ON the wall, or did you remove some of the paint?
It was one small hand print, probably from eating something, leaving behind residue...

I got that mark off, but the act of washing left water marks/streaks...and no matter how many times I try to rewash it won't go away.

It started out being a 6x6 square, to 1/4 of my wall....figuring if I kept washing it would get better. NOPE.
So it sounds like some of the paint is being removed... looks like you may have to repaint that wall?
I LOVE the Magic Eraser. It gets almost anything out!!

I keep hearing that... I was thinking about buying one, but is it really any different than any other plastic pot scrubber thingy?
As far as the wall goes, you probably took off some paint. Sorry  It will mean repainting that area.

The Magic Erasers are WONDERFUL!!!! What I love about them is you only use water. You are not having to use any kind of chemical. I highly recomend them. You do have to be careful on painted surfaces. But my walls are cream color and if a little paint comes off you can't tell. They are also the satin finish, not the flat.
Alrighty, I will repaint, I never thought I was removing the paint tho. I don't know how long it takes a wall to cure, but this probably was only a week after...maybe not even.
If its a high traffic area I would repaint it. Use a satin or semi gloss. It was probably flat paint and that streaks terrible when you wash it :)

Lol. Only in that it is neither plastic nor a pot scrubber. ;)
:excited: Yay for magic erasers. I don't know what kind of fabulous magic chemical those things are made of, but they are fantasic for getting rid of wall dirt issues!!!

And eggshell finish is notorious for being difficult to wipe off... don't feel bad. That is one of the reasons they recommend semi gloss for kitchens... easier to wipe off the pain
I painted my walls with eggshell. Then 24 hours later found a small hand print. Washed with just water and it left bigger mark. Read the paint can, it said wash with soap and water. So washed it again. So now I have an even bigger spot on wall. I was told it would be fine and needs to dry. It has been 3 days and the spot is still there. The weird thing is where I washed it is shiny and the rest of the walls look flat. HELP!!! I don't want to have to repaint my living room again. The magic eraser is not going to help because the hand print is gone. It doesn't look like I washed paint off. So what do I do? Let it set for a few more days? Repaint just the spot? Repaint everything again? I picked this paint because everyone and the internet said eggshell is easy to clean. Yeah right!
You do wash from the bottom up and rinse the same way, right? What did you use?

The best wall washing formula I know is 4 ounces (dry measure) of trisodium phosphate per gallon of warm water. If the walls are sticky, add 4 ounces of ammonia. This is a great two-person job. One washes, the other rinses. Wear goggles and rubber gloves. Wash from the bottom up. Use sponges for washing and rinsing. Change rinse water after every wall. Since you had trouble with the one spot, try washing the entire wall to even up the .....cleaning or abraiding. Don't know what is happening on your wall.
I've never heard of that paint company, but it is ALWAYS a good idea to buy the best paint.
I use Benjamin-Moore Regal paint and never have a problem.

More expensive, but lasts way longer than most other paints and the durability and cleanability are great.
I ran into this same exact thing! Did you find a solution? So disappointed with my new paint :(
We have used Behr eggshell paint and never had a problem with streaks after washing.
As it is a semi matt finish what you have done by action of washing it is caused a shiny area by effectively buffing or polishing it, if it's going to be high traffic and get regular cleaning either clean the whole wall uniformly, or use satin finish paint there.
How you wash is an important as what you use. Always start from the bottom and work upwards. One bucket of cleaner per wall and a second person should immediately follow with clean water rinse, changing the water frequently. Use the softest material you can as you don't want to abrade the paint. I use a sponge mop.

For marks, next time try shaving cream......rinse with club soda......no real scrubbing...finger pressure on the stain. Then dab try with tissue or tp. Yeah, you use a box but it is the most absorbent material around and soft, nonscratching.

It's melamine, like the plates you can buy.
It is NOT recommended for painted, glossy or fiberglass. Which I found out after I bought a bunch to clean the water spots on the waverunners.
