new to forum...getting second sheepie next week, need advice

Hi! I need some advice from experienced sheepie owners. I have had my 4-year-old neutered sheepie male for 1 year now (a rescue) and he is a fabulous dog. I have never seen him with other dogs, and have the chance to adopt a 1-year-old sheepie female. Any ideas on how to make this transition in my home go smoothly would be appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome and congratulations on your new sheepie girl.

Couple of things, try and introduce them on leads on neutral ground. Let them sniff and explore each other.

When home, feed them in seperate areas for awhile till you know that there won't be any food aggression issues.

Let them adjust to each other slowly and never leave them together on there own always under supervision till they get to know each other and also till they work out who the boss of the two are.

Have a time out area for when one might get fed up with the other that one can go away for a bit of a time out session.

Good luck with introducing a new member of the family to the household I am sure all will go well and you will all adjust too, keep special time for a one on one session with your sheepie you have now, then swap them over and have a special one on one session for the new girl. Then a group session with both playing together, that way no jealousy occurs as they are adjusting and working each other out. :D
I'm a single dog owner, but I'm sure others will hop in. I just wanted to say welcome to the forum! :D
Welcome to the forum and good luck with the new transition! Lisa's advice sounds incredible, and I will keep it in mind if/when we get to the point of considering a second OES.

Good luck! Post some pictures!
Hi1 Welcome aboard. We're in the process of transitioning to a two sheepie household as well. We've had Belle for almost a week and it's gone quite well. Lisa's advice is pretty much exactly what we did and it worked. I will add that we've also been careful to give Blue plenty of attention so he doesn't feel displaced.

Good luck!
Having rescued a second sheepie last summer - a very dominant female - I completely agree with Lisa's advice only add: respect the one who ends up being dominant - even if it's not the present dog.
Welcome to the forum! :)

I agree, introducing them on neutral ground is a great start, and allowing them *some* freedom to sort things out on their own, supervised of course, usually allows them to figure out their relationship fairly quickly and settle in :)
Welcome to the forum! I agree with what everyone said above! We introduced our male OES puppy to our 9 year old female OES just about 3 months ago. It was a challenge but they are working it all out!

We are hungry for pictures so please post soon!
My advice is "do not get discouraged and do not give up"no matter what! I was so excited to get my second sheepie who was a rescue. The first day or so where fine, they were still figuring the other one out. Max was not sure why Miller was there, until he realized he was not leaving There was food agression, and fighting. Miller was a huge alpha dog, and Max none what so ever. The rescue was not house trained, and taught my dog to pee in the house again. The rescue was abandoned and left to fend for him self when I got him, so a lot of it stemmed from that. After 2 months, I really didn't think I could do it any more. The were fights that drew blood, nipping, etc. I was at my wits end and did not know how to make them like each other. I started looking for another home and we found one after I had had him for 3+ months. But when it was time to make arrangements I COULD NOT DO IT! I loved this Dog,and I knew if he was moved again, all his old habits would come back. I have had him since and they are the best of friends! :D . Yes there are still times when I say to myself "what was I thinking - two sheep dogs?". But days like today, when I know they are both at the groomer getting their summer haircuts, they have their best friend there with them. :D
Wow, thanks so much for the responses!

I have two questions about this website...how do I post pictures (I have hundreds!) and how do I change the "shaved" word under my screen name....my dog is a puppy cut!!

I am picking up the new girl on July 4th and have been making all the arrangements here in the house. I will let you know how it goes! :D
If you go to the pictures section of the forum there are detailed instructions on how to post pics.. :)

Also, your title under your name, "shaved", will change after you've posted more
