Sheepies Complaining

I know there's a thread going on about snarling. But what I'm about to talk about is not snarling, its just plain grumbling, complaining.

When Pirate is displeased with something, or someone, he makes a deep grumble sound. We often refer to it as dinasour sounds.

Its wayyyy deep in his throat. Anyone who didn't know would think he was growling, but he isn't.

When we were at the Illinois play date, he made it a couple times when things didn't go just his way (ain't that just like a man!). It is not threating...it's just (excuse me) "oh crap".

I always make him sit, look me in my eye, and wait a few seconds before I give him meals. If I wait a bit too long for his liking, he grumbles at me!

The older he gets, the more vocal he is becoming.

Anyone have experience with this behavior? Again...it is NOT a thread, its just, "Hey! I'm not happy with this!"

OMG YES!!!
I thought it was just us! Norman makes the rumble noise and he huffs at us. That disgusted but can't do anything about it quick exhalation. You just know that if he could talk he'd tell you off.

Toby huffs but he also gives the eyeball. He's just like a little kid who's been sent to his room. He'll walk away but he always turns and looks over his shoulder and squint at you with that evil look. The first time I saw him do it I was shocked I almost told him not to look at me in that tone of voice.
I asked his breeder and apparently his brother and sister both do it too! We need Colleen to see if Gucci does it too!
Pip has a very vocal sigh... I compare it to a little kid's whine. It is like a big sigh combined with a snorting sound. It's not really close to a growl or antyhing but if he doesn't get his way, maybe I've taken a naughty something out of his mouth, or he's lost one of the kitty girls during chase, he'll complain!
Maggie grumbles too! She sounds like a cartoon character -- like a doggie version of "aww man! this stinks!" Sometimes she throws herself to the floor in a huff. I think it is hilarious.
Both MAggie and Barney grumble. It is so funny!
panda grumbles sometimes, but when she is really disgusted with us, she snort/sneezes and paws the ground......kinda like a bull 8O
Max....all 130 pounds of him.....will grumble first but then produce a whine that is so high pitched, it makes you wonder how such a squeaky sound can come out of such a big dog.
When Bailey is impatient he gives the high pitched whine - usually when he thinks we should be moving faster to do what he wants to do. But ever since he was a puppy, he's been making this deep rumbly noise when he's settling down to take a nap. It was hysterical for a little puppy to have such a low pitched rumbly noise but now he's grown into it. Usually after we've shut off the lights and he's done his final tour of the house, all will be quite and then you hear this noise - cracks me up every time.
Geez! Its not just Pirate! These dogs are sooooo vocal, and soooooo funny! People without sheepies (don't ya feel sorry for them) would/could never understand!!!
Our sheepies are very vocal as well. Belle is much more vocal than Blue. Blue occasionally makes the grumbly sound, but he mostly sighs or huffs when he's annoyed. Belle barks, growls, grumbles, sighs, and squeaks. I think she has her own language, we just haven't learned it yet.
Rebecca kind of does this high pitched whine when she doesn't get her way.

Hi,

I also make my dogs sit and wait a few seconds before I give them their meals too.

With Brogan I sit him, put his dinner bowl under his nose for a few seconds and then give it to him telling him he is a good boy. This has been part of his obedience traing which I have continued.

Getting back to the grumbling, Brogan sometimes does it but I know it's because he is excited and either wants to play or eat his dinner. He's just talking to me while he is jumping around.[/quote]

Brie does a high pitch whine & a squeaky low noise too when she does not get her way. She is not a barker, only every heard her bark about twice, one time she was outside and up came this deep bark and she frightened herself and charged back inside, soooo funny had me in stiches.

Kelsey barks and grumbles when she does not get her way or is being told off, she has to have the last word in a disagreement 8)

Love all the funny vocals that come from sheepies
Ava has the same thing goin on...sort of a roahroarooowhoowoahroaraooo noice - getting louder as she gets older
It's not just our OES-- Bear's the most vocal of my three as far grumbling. He makes Wookie noises and smacks me if if he doesn't like something. Clyde grumbles in his throat once in awhile but he stomps and shuffles his feet when he really wants to show displeasure. Lucy does a dog scream if she's mad.
This is so funny to read about others OESs. Hannah has a whinny yip if we leave her by her self in a room. All she has to do is follow us, but she has to let us know she isn't pleased to have to move. When we get dressed to go to work she will do the really deep grumble. It cracks us up!
She will occasionally do it with one of the other dogs but mostly it is to my sister and me.
With Pirate and Keira...I have them sit, then I put the food bowls on the floor, and make them look me straight in the eyes. I don't make them wait too long, just long enough for them to realize, "there's no such thing as a free meal".

The longer it takes for them to give me a good solid look, the longer it takes for them to get a "take it!"

I just think its a good way to reinforce good "table manners"
While we're talking about grumps, growls and whines I have to mention Bridie. Well, Bridie is a screamer. Honestly I've never heard a dog scream like she does, and she has done it since the day she was born. If she is in the laundry - she can see out through the screen door - and if I walk passed or one of the other dogs walks or runs passed she jumps up and down at the window screaming. It's a terrible sound and I worry that the neighbours might think I'm beating her. That's how it sounds. It's awful. Does anyone else have a screamer
LOL :D When Annie is told to "lay down" when she's in the kitchen or we won't let her in the bedroom, 99% of the time she makes a huge groaning noise when she finally lays down. We think she's saying, "You guys suck!" What's so funny is that Foz now does it too but usually only when ANNIE tells him to "lay down". She does this by moaning at him or giving him the "eye". I'm glad we have her hair short otherwise Foz would probably get nipped a lot more.
When we brought Hannah home and got her out of the car, our 5 dogs descended on her to see what we had brought home this time. She darted under the car and started screaming. Of all the dogs I've had, that was the first time I had heard one scream! It scared us to death. None of the other dogs had touched her but it you would'a thought she was being torn lmb from limb. Thank goodness she hasn't done it since. We love her other funny "talking", but we can do with out the screaming thank you very much!
Dixie is very much a screamer....

If she is in her crate and I come home she screams and screams to be let out to greet me.

I tried to put her out first in the morning and feed Bosley alone (he just had eye surgery so they are kept separated) and she just screamed her head off. I, too, thought the neighbors would be wondering...

The hard thing is to ignore the screaming and not let them win. You need to wait until they stop screaming before you respond. Otherwise you are rewaring this behavior. It is very hard, as Dixie will scream for a Looooong time. Almost like each breath she takes is a squeaky scream. 8O
Keira can be a screamer when she's really excited. I swear, when any of us come home, the neighbors must think we are beating her!

When she was a puppy and would scream, I swear it sounded like she was screaming "Help me mama!" It was pretty frightening.

I'm very glad she's grown out of that stage.
Bunker talks to me. Especially when I get on the phone. whines, grumbles, groans, burps and stamps her feet. She acts like a 2 year old.
Thank goodness I don't own the only screamer in the world. I have wondered if I did :D She is such a femine little girl and it's something you might expect from a little girl child, not from a dog.
