We're getting a cat!!! :)

Yay!!! I convinced my husband it will only be temporary.

The cat's parents (air force folks) have to leave Alaska to get medical care. The place they will be getting treatment doesn't allow pets. They won't be coming back to alaska eithert. They have a 2yo girl that will be heartbroken. She says they sleep together and she DRAGS the cat by the collar, so that seems positive (since we have a little one of course).

Welll... it was his idea to FOSTER the animal.

He has this wild idea that he just signed up for a furever pet. Have no idea why he thinks I would make him keep KoKo.

She's 2. Going to get her now. Woohoo.

As long as it makes life easier for you while Mr. J. is deployed, I'm all for it! :D

But seriously, ENJOY! :D
Oh my, it's a ZOO here. The new cat is super sweet with Jordan. Already good friends. We have her in our bedroom where she'll stay for a few days. The home we picked her up from was so tiny it made me sad. Such a nice couple living in some bad conditions.

Yuki loves the new cat. The other animals who have only smelled her are going bonkers. Our existing cat can probably be heard in the lower 48. She's pissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssed. But we've taken in several foster cats and she's always adjusted. Just takes her a long time, and it's also been almost 2 yrs since we've had another cat in the house.
are the two cats same gender? I think I read she for both???

In our house, I could not have another same gender cat. When we took in the deaf white cat, it was a female. Our male adjusted to her just fine, but our female was livid.

The neighbours beside us have a female cat too, and our male and their female get along fine, but our female and theirs does not.

The neighbours beside them have a male cat...who is extremely aggressive to ALL cats, but my male more so than the others.

Our cats are both fixed, and they have been together for 7yrs as companions. The male is 9 yrs old, and the female is 7yrs.

Keep their nails trimmed short to avoid fighting damage, and give them each their own litter box. Perhaps once things calm down, they will adjust...however you may see some stress behaviours from your cat...peeing as if she's marking the territory.

Good luck.
Aww! Congrats Jo! It took Iris and Bell a while to get used to Crash coming tolive with us... Esp. Iris. She and Crash were constantly at it because they each thought they should be top bannana! Iris won... the diva ALWAYS gets her way! Now bell and crash are best friends! Just give it time and patience and congrats on the new (if slightly temporary) arrival!!!
Yeah, any suggestions or stories would be wonderful to your experience with introducing a new cat!

My hopes: Present Cat and New Cat get along.

I knew going into this two female cats wasn't the ideal situation. I am hoping Chloe will accept her like she has all the other female cats that came into my home while I was in college. Chloe is Alpha. Every cat that's crossed her path, she's been the "you come near me when I say, immediately, and don't bug me any other time." She LOVESSSSSSSSSSSSS to play with cats though when she's accepted them.

The new cat is a doll. She is hissing when we bring the animals in (one at a time) for a 2 minute sniff, but that's to be expected. She's scared.

Our existing cat's hiss scares me. She's attacked me and the dogs a few times already, and is throwing out some karate moves anytime the dogs come near to play. This is normal behavior for her though (when bringing in new animals). She was actually worse when we brought Yuki to the home (she spent an entire 2 wks swatting me), so I feel pretty good about this. She's the one I'm afraid of. And my little maltese. I don't want her to get scratched up.

I already know some of cat lovers here are against this, but the new cat IS getting declawed Thurs. I cut her nails super short when we got home, but with an infant and a 6lb dog, I don't feel safe nor do I feel our existing cat would be on a fair playing ground.
Well, not being a cat person I cn't say I share your excitement but CONGRATULATIONS on the new addition. Pictures, forthcoming????

OOOPS, just clicked on your camera and pics are there!! She's pretty, for a cat
my husband HATES cats. he isn't excited. he just wants me to be happy. inside, i think he likes them ...to a degree. plus, it's my birthday next week and i had been begging him. he said DEFINITELY NO, but this cat fell in our laps. :)

he said this only means we're definitely getting another oes (later) since i am the one who sometimes thinks a smaller breed would be better.
She's beautiful.

I've never had to declaw a cat before, but if she is not a cat that is staying forever, why are you doing it? Are her owners paying for it?

What about putting those nail covers on both cats from the vet...our vet office has them and they are an alternative to declawing.
Well the last owners said she would pry those soft paws off. I did think about that and BROUGHT SOME (petco is next to their house) when we went to see her.

If she has a chance here, she needs her claws removed. Or else we don't feel comfortable introducing her to her majesty (the other cat). And if someone her mr. j's Yuki... ALL HELL Would break loose.

The plan is to keep her AT LEAST a year (that's the plan I told mr. j). My plan is to keep her unless the animals getting along is just impossible.
Good Luck!!

Raising animals is alot like raising children sometimes you have to do what's best for your family even if it's not what other families do  In the end it's "your" family!!
I can't say I like getting a cat's beautiful claws removed... it goes right up there with de-barking a dog for me. :(

But I am happy that you're getting a cat. They are definitely different than dogs but when they are lovey-dovey with you for the first time it is very rewarding.
AS FAR AS DECLAWING YOU'VE GOTTA MAKE THE DECISION AS FAR AS WHAT IS SAFE FOR YOUR FAMILY... BOTH MY GIRLS ARE FULLY ARMED, CRASH IS DECLAWED. SHE HOLDS HER OWN DURING CAT WARS... PIPPIN HAS BEEN SWATTED BY BOTH CLAWED GIRLS BUT NEVER INJURED....

AS FOR INTRODUCTIONS. WE KEPT CRASH IN HER BEDROOM FOR THE FIRST SEVERAL DAYS. THE KITTY GIRLS WERE ALLOWED IN TO SEE HER SUPERVISED ONLY AFTER THE FIRST DAY. AFTER A WEEK SHE WAS ALLOWED FREE RANGE. THERE WAS A LOT OF HISSING AND SCRABBLING, BUT ONLY ONE SERIOUS INCIDENT THAT WE FELT HAD TO BE BROKEN UP.... MOSTLY IT WAS JUST POSTURING.

NOW IF YOU HEAR A HISS IN MY HOUSE IT IS EITHER:

A) CRASH AND BELL PLAYING TOO HARD WITH EACH OTHER

B) SOME ONE IS MAD AT PIP... HUH, WHAT A SURPRISE!
