Chumley is Home!!

Omigod she was so excited when I went to pick her up. Barking nonstop and ran to the car. (I suppose that could just mean she is wound up but still, it was nice to see her energy). Now, she is home, panting heavily, and looking very happy. Her ears are pulled up a bit like she is wanting to make sure she catches everything.

Remember how guilty I felt that I didn't get her a fancy puppy cut? Well, at this point she has so many shaved patches all over her body that I am glad it didn't ruin a good 'do.

She's looking pretty mobile. When she got out of the car, she had a long pee in a deep squat -- which I've never seen her do. I'm supposed to limit her activity and keep an eye out for side effects of the prednisone but they didn't seem worried that the situation would recur. I'm still waiting on the results of the tests for infections of various sorts.

Penn provided detailed discharge notes and I have learned ALOT about her from this experience.

She has:

    -enlarged facets on some of the vertebrae in her neck;
    -elevated protein in her spinal fluid;
    - no damage to muscle fibers;
    -narrowing of the vetebral canal in her lower neck but no spine compression;
    -inflammation of the nerve roots that exit the spine (the likely cause of her pain and lameness);
    -stones in her gallbladder but no blockages;
    -mottled spleen with poorly defined nodules (can be due to old age);
-"echogenic strands" throughout her bladder lumen but not attached to the bladder wall (??) possibly due to chronic inflammation. no neoplasia detected.

Things they have ruled out include cervical spondylomyelopathy ("Wobblers"); herniated disk, and polyarthropathy.

The plan is to manage symptoms while they wait for results of the infectious disease tests.

While I was writing this, she finally settled down and stopped panting!! She's right here next to me. and it is wonderful to have her back.

I'm so glad Chummie is home and resting comfortably... you both must be so happy and relieved. :clappurple: I read about the "deep squat" while peeing :D Excellent!

Thanks for the update. I hope the remaining tests come back normal too.

Thanks! I actually hope they come back Abnormal, because that would explain what caused this and it could be treated and I could be confident she is cured. Not knowing what caused it worries me. . .

Now she is sleeping peacefully. Yay Chummie!
Oops! You're right. Changing my hope...
Hoping for abnormal that is quickly and easily treated :D
I'm so glad she's home and resting easy.
Awww. So glad she's home and happy and doing well...
I'm so happy she is home and feeling better, Val! I understand you wanting to get to the bottom of all of this. I LOVE THE AVATAR!
Yay Chummie and Val and Maggie!!!

I hope she continues to improve.

The peeing, can that be increased by the Prednisone? I know she may feel extra energy from it, and perhaps some reduced sleep.
Great to have her back home where she belongs!! Nothing like a good long pee to make one relax.........

As already said, may the test come back to something that can be cured easily. Your vet bill must be strangling........but worth every penny to have Chummie back with you and her "old" self again.

susan
Yes, they said prednisone would increase thirst and peeing. I was more surprised to see her stance. She's always been a stiff-legged pee-er and a walking pooper so to see her get into and hold a deep squat was quite a surprise.

Anyone want to guess the amount of the bill? She was checked into ER Monday night and transferred to in-patient care Tuesday morning through Sunday morning (5 nights). She had an MRI, ultrasound, spinal tap, joint taps, xrays, and bloodwork. Plus she was administered IV pain killers, antacids & sucralfate for her tummy, and then predisone (2.5 days worth). She was under the care of a neurologist specialist and examined by various other doctors.
I'm so glad to hear that she's home and resting comfortably. Hopefully she'll be back to her old self soon!

My guess at the vet bill is $4200 8O
Gonna reserve comment on the estimate to give others a chance at a Very Special Prize to whomever is closest without going over.

Here she is resting. She doesn't exactly look happy, but she looks calm and tired and I am glad she is home resting:

And check out some of the fancy contours in her new hairdo. This actually is a good picture for showing how much weight she has lost since last year. I have her in a harness with a carry-handle so I can help her with stairs:

I am so happy to have her home. And that she's not squealing in pain anymore.
Poor Chum. She looks sooooooooo tired in the photos. You know what they say about hospitals... you never can get any rest in them!

Thanks Stacey! I was actually trying to pick a picture that looked like one of Jaclin's (6Girls) -- her dogs always look so happy so I scrounged around for one where M&C were both smiling and put a border around it like she does. So I'm just a copy cat. But it is a cute picture.

I guess so! She's barely moved. Didn't even come to the door to greet me when I came home from shopping. But this is good - she needs to rest.

Here's more of the bad haircut -- shaved wrists for the joint taps, and a bandage where the IV was.:

Sweet Chummley! Glad that she is home!!! Um, I guess $2950.00
$3300 Canadian.....so $3000 American??? Not sure what the conversion is these days.....keeps changing!!!

Glad she's home!
can I change it to $1.00...everyone might go over..... 8O
Yes, Darcy, you can change it. I will judge based on whatever is anyone's most recent guess. Are you switching your bet?

Nicole, if you want, I can do the conversion from $3300 canadian on the day I arbitrarily decide to end this contest.

Remember everyone -- there will be a Very Special Prize. George can guess what it is -- just George though -- anyone else gets disqualified. :) (making up rules as I go along).

Anyway, here's a pic that shows what just a few hours of being at home does for a dog. Now she's looking more like my sweetie:

$3710
Wow - poor sweety. I'm glad she's home!!
It is a good sign if you are supposed to limit her activity. Shows she is feeling better.
Welcome home Chum.. we missed you.. glad you are feeling better.

Dudley and Murphy

$5,397.00 US.. that's our guess.
Welcome home Chummie! She looks like she has been used as a pin cushion but does look happy to be home.

Hubby guess is $3,564

Mine: $4,117

Lucky & Sam said that Chummie got to go home in less pain then before:

PRICELESS!
:yay: YAY youre chummie is home sweet home. She looks so happy to be back with you and maggie.

The bill 8O $3200 or more :?
im so glad chummie is home, she does look very happy!

i guess: $4850 USD
Yay Chum!! :) I'm so glad she's home.
Makes me wince to see those pics of her front legs.... her skin looks so bruised :(

My guess for the vet bill is 2286.00 US
:phew: What great news!! I'm SO glad to hear Chum's home and resting comfortably. I bet she's so happy to be home, too! :yay:

Went the prednisone route with two dogs before (including Drez). Yes, there are side effects, but when all else fails, it is a wonder to see the change in them. You have to look at it from the point of view of there is no choice, and if this is what will help her, so be it.

My guess is a bit higher. Figuring it is UPenn's vet hospital, and UPenn Hospital isn't cheap, I'll guess $7000. 8O

Big hugs to everyone in your house! :hearts:
Yeah Chummie! So glad to hear she is home, what a great feeling for you!
Yay! I'm so glad she's home!

I'm gonna guess $2155...
BLESS HER HEART!!! I AM SO RELIEVED THAT SHE IS HOME WITH YOU AND HER FAMILY!!! Here's all of our best wishes for her continued speedy recovery. She is just beautiful. That was absolutely heartbreaking about her crying when you left.

Vet bill guess, from experienced vet bill PAYOR, $5700.

It must be much less than my guess or we would have heard the thump of you hitting the floor when you saw the bill. Either that or you were just so glad to get your baby home.
I am so happy that Chumley is home!! Big hugs and kisses to her
I'm debating between $3760 and $6400. Hmmmmm
Let's go with $3760. Have they included the costs of the infectious disease testing already?

Glad to hear Chummie's back and feeling better! That Prednisone will start to drive you crazy with all of the drinking and peeing. If nothing else it'll probably keep her from getting a bladder infection! :D
Poor girl. I missed all of this last week, I guess. I'm so glad she's home and doing better.

I don't want to think about your vet bill! lol I'm going to guess $4600
Yea!!!! I am so glad that Chummie got to come home. I'm sure she is much more relaxed and happy just being home. :high5:
Hi,

Logged on this morning to see how Miss Chumley was doing. Yeah!! So glad that she is home and she looks as cute as ever. You realize you now have bragging rights to "how much your dog cost". I was always slighlty bemused at those viewing my beraggled Shaggy when I claimed she's my 4,000 dollar dog. So that's my quess to the hefty vet bill you paid. If that numbers been taken..then 4,007 dollars is my quess.

Belly rubs to Chumley and some to Maggie too.

Marianne and the boys
oops forgot to guess. $3,450 :D
All right, tell us now! I want to know! I don't even care about the prize, I'm just curious.
I'll announce the winner when I am at home tonight after work. People have the rest of the day to make or change their guesses. :D
$2400 US...I am hoping they gave you a break and only charged where they needed to, and gave you a discount.

Glad she's back and doing well with recovery.
Maybe Val is pulling a fast one, and has insurance so it came to $50.
where as my $1.00 bid would be the winner! :D
My estimate: $3,475.53

(I hope I'm waaaaaay over for Val's sake).
Glad Chumley is home :D
Give her some big hugs from me and the boys.

I can't guess on the vet bills as i'm no good on the exchange rates
val,

So very glad to hear Chumley is feeling better... here's hoping all that after all the money you spent, the vet comes up with a firm diagnosis and easy treatment!

I'm going to guess that it cost you $5020...
1stly you're assuming someone let you change your bid.
2ndly if you get to change your bid to $1, then I get to have two bids, 'cause I'm taller.
Does that mean I could change my bid to $3 since I am taller & uhhh larger than both Ron & Darcy?
I find that hard to believe

I'm not sure actually. I will go double check. . .
Tease.
LOL!
If it's taking that long to add up the bill maybe I should have guessed much higher.
well im off to bed now as its 1am here.so i'll find out tomorrow how much the vet bill come too. :D
Oh the suspense is killing me.. I think I guessed a little low too, but I'm just hoping they loved Chum as much as we all do and figured they'd give you a discount!

LOL. OK it looks like the votes have tapered off. The grand total was $4702, which makes Boobaby the closest, but she went over. Sorry boobaby.

The winner is . . . .

Gail (JakobandBrandon'sMom)!!

The prize is, well no surprise, a free calendar next year!!! If you don't want to wait that long, I will volunteer to make another photo gift of your choosing.

Boobaby, I'd like to offer you a consolation prize but I don't have any ideas that the moment.

I didn't confirm whether the blood titers were included so if anyone wants to challenge the results. . . well, get over it.

For the price of a decent used car, I got my Chummie back!!
Wow 8O

Worth every penny though :)
Well Lucky & Sam said it best when they said that if Chummie got to go home in less pain then before it was...

PRICELESS!
Yeah, The MRI was a big chunk of it at $1970.
First of ALL WELCOME HOME CHUMMIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I was reading through the thread I was hopeing I would be in time to register my "guess", which HONEST TO PETE was $5,000 but got tot the end as seee I'm toooooooo late. But I know the cost of MRI's so figured it would be WAY UP THERE!!!!!

The real winner is CHummie s who has the worlds BEST MOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holey Smokes! $2,000 for the MRI! I figured the MRI at $800, if I had known the full cost, my guess woulda been $4,880... off by $180!

BooBaby, what a great guess!!!
Chummie is so worth that and much more!!! Too bad my low bid of $1.00 didnt work...hmm...it works a lot on the Price Is Right 8O

Thanks! Turns out, priceless does come at quite a price. Luckily, I like inexpensive cars.
Ron wrote:

Yes it was, but Gail gets credit too! Boobaby was $82 over and Gail was $102 under. Both very close.
Wow, expensive. Worth every penny though I'm sure. :)

I can wait on a calendar. :) Thanks Val.
I'm late getting to read this since I was out of town, but I am thrilled to death that Chumley is home and feeling better and so thankful that you were able to provide the very best care for her. Her smile in that last pic you posted brought tears to my eyes. Easy to see how grateful and happy she is.
AWW so glad chumleys home.

 From Maizie and me
