Problem at the Puppy Park

I took my 2 year old deaf Sheepie Francesca to the puppy park today. She has been to puppy daycares and also plays very nicely with a number of dogs in our neighborhood, both male and female. But she did not get along well at the puppy park. Francesca typically approaches dogs and licks them on the side of the cheek. Sometimes, when she starts licking, the other dogs did not like it and they will snap at her, which I expect. But twice, she snapped at other dogs when they did not let her lick them.

There were no fights, she just walked away after snapping. But I have never, ever seen her do that. Generally, she is a very loving, friendly puppy.

Any suggestions about what is going on with her? Also, what does the side cheek licking mean? I really don't want her to become aggressive.

from what I understand cheek licking is a sign of submission......

So she licks to show submission and when that's not welcome, she yells "Hey mister! Pay attention! I was being SUBMISSIVE!" Funny. Kinda.

Maggie is a big cheek licker and when dogs ignore her, she barks too. I guess I think it is sort of hilarious -- like "play with me!! Please play with me!!!" Never seems hostile, just kinda desperate.

Was Francesca being hostile? What was her body language like?
Hi,

Those whom view themselves as the submissive ones always do the jowl licking..think of when you pick up a puppy. 99% will lick your face.

Watch a mom with her puppies and you'll see the same thing. You'll see this in wolves too. Some claim it goes back to their ancestors when pups would lick an adults face in hopes the adult would regurgitate their food for them. Wolf moms still do this for their pups as do the other adult wolves whom help care for them.

Watch a group of dogs and in most cases you'll see the pups greet adults in this same way. Adult dogs continue to do this with more dominant members.

Sounds like Francesca is just being a sweet girl and although she snapped, at this point I wouldn't be alarmed as she didn't follow through with anything else. The only problem I would watch out for is, if a dog accidently bumped into her or someone touches her from behind without her expecting it, You can desensitize her to this. This site helpful..actually two sites for owners of deaf dogs.

The boys are sending sheepie kisses her way.
