what is A? B? Personailities...please define.

I was reading stacy's post, and i am curious how this is defined, or to define me?

I feel like I am a relaxed person, the house can get messy, I don't "Need" to iron, but will for special occasions. I don't often have worrysome thoughts, but they've been there.

However I would never let someone come into my home unless I had it as clean as I can make it. If I invite someone over for supper, I become obsessive, and grouchy, and panicky...I drive my hubby nuts. I always wonder how people see me, and think of me...I never want them to know the "real" me...the messy side of things.

Once people get here, I usually relax and enjoy the evening, and hubby has calmed me down.

I don't put myself out there to help, because I feel the little control person inside me wanting to "fix" their ideas, and do it my way. I seem to have a way of organizing and cutting down the steps it takes. But I am lazy so don't want the task of doing it, so I usually keep quiet and help with clean up.

HERE'S THE SHORT VERSION OF THE TYPE A/B THING FROM WIKIPEDIA.COM... I'M SURE IF WE HAVE ANY PSYCH MAJORS ON THE FORUM, THEY COULD GO INTO IT MORE INDEPTH!!

Type A and Type B personalities
During the 1950s, Myer Friedman and his co-workers defined what they called Type A and Type B personality types. They theorized that intense, hard-driving Type A personalities had a higher risk of coronary disease than those of Type B, people who tend to be relaxed, uncompetitive, and inclined to self-analysis.
I just pulled this off the glossary from the American Psychology Association's website. They've even added a new "C" personality to the mix which is kind of interesting. Remember, these descriptions are at the extreme end of the spectrum. A person can fall anywhere in between and have characteristics of any type...but we tend to lean towards one end no matter how hard we try. 8)

Type A behavior pattern A complex pattern of behaviors and emotions that includes excessive emphasis on competition, aggression, impatience, and hostility; hostility increases the risk of coronary heart disease.

Type B behavior pattern As compared to Type A behavior pattern, a less competitive, less aggressive, less hostile pattern of behavior and emotion.

Type C behavior pattern A constellation of behaviors that may predict which individuals are more likely to develop cancer or to have their cancer progress quickly; these behaviors include passive acceptance and self-sacrifice.
That's interesting. I guess I am an B personality more than the others. I am quietly competitive, and I am analyzing what it means to be analyzed.
Type A takes a trip: Has the car serviced, has maps at hand, has emergency flashlight, blanket, etc. in the trunk. Has water bottles, snacks, books on tape. Keeps track of mileage, miles per gallon, etc. etc. etc.

Type B takes a trip: Gets in the car and goes. His theory: The world is round, I'll get there!
oops... i guess im a ''a'' after all....does it count too if you pack a month before any vacation?????

no that's just crazy.
(see also type NUTS)
Then I am an A...I micro manage all that stuff before all trips...see camping kids, planning for a trip like that at least 1 mth in advance.

Once we are there tho, I tend to settle into it and start to relax. But I feel if I didn't do the obsessing then something will be missed, and everyone looks at me and say "MOM...how could you forget?"

So begs my next question, are we put into this "type" because noone else will do the work?

What if I want to be the other "type" and can't, because everyone depends on you?
Hi,

I once took a course and the instructor labled me an A type personality..based on my clothes. Type A's apparently have to have matching purses and shoes..clothes are co-ordinated. Ha! She'd think differently when she saw me at home trying to get on my ugly rubber boots, struggling to get any colored jacket on while attempting to leash three dogs. That's another story however.

There's also colors..found out I'm an orange/ green but forget what that means too.

As for shapes..I'm a squiggle (another workshop I attended) They catogorized people into squares, circles, or squiggles depending on your answers. Squiggles tended to be creative thinkers..again all I remember.

So there you have it..I'm an A type, orange/green squiggle!

Sheesh and all along I thought I was a human.

Marianne and the boys
There are new studies that suggest that they typical type "A" personality is not as prone to Cardiac problems as was originally thought. Type A personalities while often aggressive and impatient also are more open with their emotions. The more with holding type "B" may actually be at higher risk because they tend to internalize stress and not deal with it.
Well then Ginny I am totally an A....Brian hears all of my rant and raves
No one has mentioned the type "D" personality.
Those of us with dogs!
Signs and symptoms include but are not limited too:

Can't wait to get out of work so you can go walk your baby.

Will drive 30 miles one way to get special dog food but hate to run down the street to get milk.

Your vet knows you better than your own doctor.

You turn on the air conditioning because it is too hot for the puppy.

Most conversations include the words groom, brush, mud or poop.

I am sure there are quite a few more too.

the implication is hilarious, note that type A has no gender specificity. type B has a "his" implying it's a man. does this mean all women are type A's?

that explains a lot in my personal life.

i took a drive today that was fun. i think i went about 50 miles, no real reason or destination.
LOL :D
I wanna be a squiggle too...but if one was to look at me they'd see round...

I don't think so. I think it is your perception that that is the situation -- that there is work to be done and people are depending on you and no one else is going to do it -- that defines you as Type A. Can't blame us Type B's for that! I don't spend alot of time worrying about stuff and I always fall asleep easily. What needs to get done mostly gets done. And what doesn't, well, I'll leave that to you to worry about.
Here's a funny way to look at personalities:

The optimist says, "Yay! The glass is half full."

The pessimist says, "Rats! The glass is half empty."

The clueless says, "Hey! What's this? I ordered a cheeseburger!"

the paranoid schizophrenic says "someone drank half of my drink and wants to kill me"

the rent controlled apartment superintendant says "i don't care how much is left, that's your problem"

the college student says "dude, next time we can split the soda and save a buck"
