Any experience with Adequin-(Adequan)?

Has anyone used this drug for hip issues and/or degenetrive joints?? It was developed for horses, and now is available in a format for dogs. Chilidog is 10 and it is hard to get up off the floor or her bed. Just thought that someone may be familiar with this "newish" drug. It is supposably a great drug, not cheap, but does work. Thanks

Hi Chilidog,

Welcome to the forum!

Joan and I have used Adequan in the past, with our first sheepdog Jake. He had multiple problems; hip dysplasia as well as Degenerative Myelopathy (a problem with the nerves affecting his hind quarters).

We went through a series of the Adequan shots, but I didn't seem to notice any improvement from the shots, which would only help with the arthritis from the hip dysplasia.

However, I have heard some good things too! Perhaps some other members have had other experiences with it, good or bad, and will jump in!

Give a rub to the Chilidog for us. :D
Here's the manufacturer's website in case it will help...

Sorry, I don't have any experience that I can share with you but I hope it works for Chilidog!
I did the 4 week treatment program with Chummie. She was having a hard time getting up and seemed sensitive in her rear knees. Her condition did seem to improve but the glucosamine oral supplement had a more noticeable impact. She also lost alot of weight which probably helped but she's currently out of commission with some severe spinal pain. So I have no idea what is going on with her and whether it helped or not.
We are giving MO Adaquen, Adequin.....or however you spell it.....now. Her arthritis is up front in her carpus, wrist. We've done the four weeks and just started the once a week or is it a month now? Month I think.

I didn't see any help after the first 3 weeks so started giving her Glucosamine in several formulas in addition to the Adequan. She is now taking Cosequin, hyaluronic acid and Glycoflex III. I also give her one Bufferin a day since she can not tolerate Dermamxx or Rimadyl.

She started to do much better and then quit eating again. So I dropped everything for 3 days, her limping returned immediately so I'm now putting all the supplements back in. So I'm guessing Adequan isn't doing her as much good as one of the supplements........but which one.

So to answer your question, is Adequan helping? I don't know. We've used it before on Sam who did respond quite well to the shots and was going great for 3 years before he came down with bone cancer.

Adequan works great on the horses let me tell you..... I also inject my bosses lab because she torn her patellar ligement when she was a pup and it never healed cause there is also damage to the bone, it works great for her but she is also on deramaxx. I would also suggest Lubricon for dogs, it is also available for horses. Glycoflex works well but I think to make adequan work to its best you have to use it with another supplement on a regular basis.
Hi,

Our Sheepie boy is still pretty young (he's a rescue so we don't know exactly, but judging by the bounce, he's a youngster! :D ), so we don't have Sheepie experience on this topic, but we do with our BMD. He'll be 9 this fall (and unfortunately, that's getting up there for a Berner). He's doing really great (knock wood) but last winter we noticed a little limping occasionally, especially when he'd first get up from a nap. After talking with our DVM acupuncturist, we started him on injectible PSGAG (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan--generic form of Adequan--and much cheaper). Glycosaminoglycan is a substance that occurs naturally in joints, and it helps stimulate the joint membrane to produce new joint fluid and increase its viscosity, thereby lubricating the joint. PSGAGs also bind to damaged cartilage to promote healing. The other big plus as far as I'm concerned is that at this point, the research shows that PSGAGs are absorbed from the muscle into the bloodstream and are taken up preferentially by the inflamed joint or joints, so they can be administered intramuscularly, rather than injected directly into the joint (yeow!), which is how they used to administer it. Since his initial four-week once-a-week course we've been getting an injection once a month, and Otto has been doing well--no limping at all. But his symptoms were very mild, and Dr. said PSGAG therapy works much better when the arthritis is not severe. When it gets more advanced, additional therapies may be needed to give relief. The other downside is that if you have a dog that is frightened by the vet, the required repeated visits can be a problem. Otto is terrified of our allopathic vet (not her fault, but he gets pretty freaked out at her office), so if we didn't have our veterinary acupuncturist and his vet tech (both of whom Otto just adores), this treatment would not be a good option for us.

This article gives a pretty good overview of current treatments for canine arthritis and it's readable by us non-scientific types:

Good luck with Chilidog! Our Quincey sends a friendly Sheepie Bum Wiggle and a play bow your way.

Actually, we give MO the injections.......my husband does......I can't bring myself to do it. Fortunately she has thunder thighs so finding the muscle is no problem for him. With Sam, he was just a big dog so big muscle.

I have an akita male, about 1 year. He has been diagnosed with arthritis in front carpal after limping occured regularly. We put him on the loading dose of adequan for four weeks, and saw minimal results. After the dose after the loading dose, we began to see a tremendous improvement in him. More energy, more mobile and eager to play always now. Glad we tried it, even more so that it worked.

I wouldn't be discouraged if it doesn't work right away after the loading dose. My pup is about 85lbs and from what I gather it takes longer to see results from heavier/ larger breeds. Also I want to say that PT and swimming also contributed to a great recovery for lil Sapporo.
Adequan works great for my 10yr. old german shephard Greta. I give her the injections myself and it is not hard. Have to go throug the 8 shots twice a week and then you will see improvement. Good Luck.
My beloved Rusty, a very healthy 13 year old yellow lab started on Adequan 9/8/09. He soon began to loss his appetite and become lethargic. On checking with the vet I was told to continue the shots. Rusty had minor kidney desease which was responding very well to a low protein diet and supplements. By the 4th shot he was beginning to shut down. I discontinued the Adequan, but it was too late he died on 9/27/09. In my grief I researched Adequan on line and found it was known to cause each and every symptom Rusty had. Including bloody stool ,depression, vomiting, liquid in the kidneys, swollen kidneys and even joint pain. Also, every article I read and the original NADA 141-038 drug approval warn about giving this drug to any dog with a pre-existing kidney condition. In other words, he never should have been prescribed this drug. Be care, this drug can be a killer!

COSMO IS 14-1/2 YRS OLD AND HE HAS BEEN GETTING ADEQUAN SHOTS SINCE NOV. 2015. HE DID THE INITIAL 2X/WK
FOR A MONTH AND WAS LIKE BRAND NEW. HE WAS LIKE A 7 YR OLD SHEEPDOG. HE HAS REALLY BAD OSTEOARTHRITIS.
HE GETS A SHOT EVERY 2 WKS NOW. IT REALLY HAS HELPED HIM AS FAR AS GETTING UP AND WALKING. HE NOW HAS
NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEMS SO WE ARE DEALING WITH PARESIS. ALL IN ALL, ADEQUAN HAS HELPED HIM TREMENDOUSLY
AND I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.
If I had not witnessed the difference in my 15 year old Aussie Shepherd mix, I would not have believed it.
From having trouble/pain getting up, sitting down, and the dreaded stairs, to jumping a short garden fence, and
enjoying his daily 2 mile walks. Truly amazed to see him chasing the ducks, geese and squirrels again. Its is as
if we have rolled back the aging clock a couple years, and i am happy to see the difference in the quality of his life.
Its been almost a year, and yes start up with 2 injections a week can be hard with time & money, but now we go
every 3 weeks, an entire month i see a bit of a slow down for him. I saw results by the 2-3rd week. Amazing!
