Another Gift Idea for a woman (mid 30's)

Now that I've found a gift for my dad, it's time to look for a birthday gift for my sister-in-law. I think she'll be turning 36, but I could be off a year.

She has two kids (1 and 3), lives in a butthot town in TX, and has a husband in Iraq. She likes to run, loves church, and is the best mom I know. I'd like to get her something other than a giftcard. Mostly because I can't think of a place or store that would be good enough to give to her a giftcard to (or we've already done it).

Any ideas? I've done clothes twice already. Maybe even three times.

What about...
A new pair of running shoes (or running shorts, etc.)
A subscription to Self or some other healthy lifetstyle magazine
a fruit bouquet basket
One of those little cooling devices she can wear while running
cooking classes
i dont know how much you plan on spending, but you could get her an ipod shuffle for when she goes running, i believe they are $100
What about a gift box of scrapbooking supplies?
How about a "spoil me" gift card for like a mani/pedi or massage or facial or some other such "spa day" activity. Any Mom with a 1 & 3 year whose husband is in Iraq probably needs some "me" time. :D

Oooh me too! (And I don't have kids or a husband in Iraq.) I love that idea. But you would need to know for sure she would use it.
That's true, Val. You would have to make sure she had a sitter for the kids.

The other idea I thought of, Jo, was tickets to something - like a show or concert she'd enjoy and, depending on your budget for the gift, maybe a gift card for her favorite restaurant so she could have dinner before the show. Also -need a sitter for this gift. :D

P.S. Val - you deserve a spa day!
I like the Spa idea...

Also, one gift I received that I LOVED- pre-paid house-cleaning for a month... I know it sounds silly, but for me, having two little boys, working and being single, it was SO AWESOME!!!
You said her hubby is in Iraq. If there's enough time maybe a video from him, or even a tape recording. She'd never expect that coming from "you". (Of course I'm thinking back to the days of Viet Nam, when we didn't have the luxury of the computers to communicate with our spouses like they do now???).

I love the spa idea too, but you can never go wrong with a gift certificate from a Bible Book Store. Especially if there's something she's been wanting.

mouthypf
I say at spa treatment. Massage.
Okay I've done the spa thing, and in the moment it was great...but they are not worth the $300 it might cost you. The meassage feels like a feather...or your in pain. I've yet to walk away from a spa thinking that was the best use of my money...

But in the moment it was a nice escape.

I like the housekeeper idea better. She probably already has the jogging stroller...but those are nice.

I like the scrapbooking idea too, she can spend alot of time building a family album, an album for each child and a wedding one.

I like to have fresh flowers...you could have flowers delivered every week for 1 mth.

Some really cool jewlery...big necklaces are back.

Gift certificate to get her hair done, and a manicure...poshy hair salon.

$300?? I just checked one of our top spas and price is $75 for an hour.
I love massages! I think if you have someone not giving you the touch you want, you have to speak up and say I can barely feel you, or Ouch that's too hard. They should be able to adjust to your needs. oh, I wanna a massage!!

It's Canadian money so it all evens out.

You really do have to get someone you like and let them know what works for you. My best girl friend went to massage therapy school so her class had to fulfill a certain amount of hours so I got a lot of massages for free. They all learned the same thing but it was amazing in the difference of touch by everyone. They never minded being told what you preferred-- they want you to come back to them! Definitely get recommendations though for spas or massage therapists. Not all are created equal!
Hey, the Canadian Dollar is at a 29 year high vs the US Dollar right now.

A couple of days ago I check and the CAD is worth .91 USD. 1 USD will give you 1.09CAD

A couple of years ago it was .67. so 1 USD would give you 1.50CAD.

Is Canada doing that well, or is the US doing that poorly? Or both?
Well, I just checked and the CAD has fallen off just a bit, so now 1 USD gets you about 1.12CAD.

Lol. It's bred into people in our area that we have to make fun of Canadian money-- I think we'd have to do it even if it were worth more, the jokes would just change.
The last spa thing I did was in Banff...geered for tourists but they also have to survive as a town. Anyways, a massage by itself for 30 min was not $300, it was something like $75 as well. But to enjoy the whole thing I had a moor mud wrap, a jasmine (soak)...where you have to wash off the mud, so it is also a scrub. A facial, and then a massage. For the 4 things, and a free massage oil to take home...it cost me $300, and I left a tip as well. I was there for 2 1/2 hours.

Yes our dollar is catching up, I'm not sure how "Canada" is doing but Alberta is doing great. We as a province is debt free, and have a surplus to do things, and they are giving us some rebates for high gas prices.
Ok...I'm reading all of these suggestions, and I've decided, I want to be Jo's SIL!!!!!
I think the cleaning service is a GREAT idea for anyone!
I would be thrilled if someone got me a cleaning service. :D
a gigolo?

i know a guy who knows a guy.
Pedicure sounds great if she's a runner. Movie tickets? Dinner out? Workout clothes. Flowers. Earrings.
Id take the cleaning service as long as they would let me tell them how to clean.................

Its the polish in me 8O
Those are all great ideas! I LOVE the maid one. That was one I really talked to Mr. J about. That was really popular at our last duty station. ...but being that she's in a different state (and in a town we've never lived in), I have no idea what is around her nor can I tell what is good or not when I did a search on google.

Our chaplain recommended a must-have book to us, so I think I'm going that route. ..with shipping, the book is $50 (Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Bible), and that's pretty much what we like to spend for a birthday gift. Although I am thinking of sending her some baked goodies from Williams & Sonoma. We have a big family. We can't afford $100 gifts for everyone plus double for all the nephews and nieces (my sil is having twins!).

You guys did give me ideas on what to give my mom since her birthday is ALSO around the corner.
