Look What The Cat Dragged In!!

2 am...zzzzzzzzz (imitation of my sound sleep). I hearing the cat door banging repeatedly and loud MEEEEEEEOWWWW - I know instinctively that's their prey cry. I have repeatedly told the cats..no live things please!
Usually they are good kitties and listen..Daisy brings me a pile of pine cones daily and leaves it in a neat pile at the bottom of the stairs for me to eat at my leisure. :D Like kids sometimes they test and try to bring in live things but so far I've twarted their attempts and managed to save them..that I know about anyhow.

I race down the stairs - heart beating wilding after jumping up from my deep sleep. I see something brown and wiggly in Paris's mouth. Paris is the only male cat and is....you know whipped by the girls..he's a wimp! Guess he was proud of his first catch. He sees me and drops it. I'm still racing down the stairs, towel in hand ..to try to save the creature.

I look closer..what the heck is THAT? I realize it's a tiny baby mole from pictures I've seen..never seen a live one before. Towel over it I try to pick it up...it Hisses!!!! egads..I didn't know they hiss!!Thehiss brings the other 3 cats...and all three dogs. Yup that's right 2 am and I'm on the stairs surrounded by 4 cats, 3 dogs...and a mole I'm trying to pick up. I wish I could remember if theyeven have teeth but not about to take a chance. This little thing is about the size of a fat mouse. Oh wait I remember when my sister and I were six and set up a booth in front of my house once...see the dead mole 10 cents. No lemonaide stands for us..even then I was a rebel. We only had one taker however. :lmt:

Furballs are looking at me ..like you gonna eat it Mom or what? I'm extending my legs down the stairs and trying to hook a box at the bottom of the stairs with my big toe. Couldn't leave the mole.

That feat done..I sorta flipped the mole in the box, lock cat door and race outside in the pouring rain..it's now 2:20 am.

Ahh what the heck..I release the little baby in my garden. I am amazed at the speed in which he digs a hole and dissapears. Whew! another critter saved ...finally go back to sleep at 4 am.

They are soooo weird looking..look at those feet!

hahahahahahahaha, it's ok Marianne, you are in good company with the typos........................ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh! What a wild night! Great storytelling. I was on the edge of my seat.

Moles are icky.
Marianne, your life is NEVER dull :)
WOW... KUDOS to you for your quick response,,, have you ever considered writing? You kept me on the edge of the seat- I had mutliple thoughts going thru my head on what it was.... a mole was not one of the thoughts! The suspense was great-

So glad that was at your house and not mine... between my sons and the animals here, it is never dull- we have had turtles, rabbits, baby bunnies, birds, snakes --- WAY enough for me! LOL!

Get some rest!
Great story, Marianne! Icky!
Great story, who cares about the typos? Surely not me!!!! I can't find my own :?

Marianne - I always enjoy your stories! You tell them so well - it's just like being there. 8)

Lucky mole! :D
that was one lucky mole Marianne! The kitty girls at my house have been overly active also. While they don't get to go outside, the bat incursion in my attic has unfortunately provided them with ample hunting activities... This has already resulted in several bat rescues by my husband, and 2 dead bats in my sister's bedroom (one was just this morning  )

STAY IN THE ATTIC BATS!!! FOR YOUR OWN SAFTEY... DO NOT VENTURE INTO THE HOUSE!
I know it was 2 in the morning but did you consider that u just released a MOLE into your GARDEN 8O i didn't think that is a creature that u would want in there. :lmt:

Iriskmj! I just read your post about the bats in the attic. Last Thursday, our vet was telling us about a woman who had a cat who never went outside and, thus, had no rabies shot. The cat caught a bat in the attic and got rabies and the whole family had to have rabies treatment! Please be careful. Maybe you should see about having the bats removed from the attic. I'm not trying to interfere but am just concerned for your safety!
Iriskmj, The standard of care is to give rabbies vaccine to family members in a house where a bat has gotten in, because supposedly they can bite when you are sleeping and you won't realize it. Please check with your family Dr. and try to make it so the bats can't get into your living area.
My girls are up to date on their rabies, but thanks for the thought! As soon as I knew we had bats, I made sure to get them their rabies shots... can't be too careful!

Bats are VERY beneficial animals, are not agressive and I have no problems with them. We have managed to exclude them from one attic already (where they had lived for years) but we missed an eave this spring when we were bat proffing, so they're up in the main attic this year. when they migrate out for autumn, we'll seal up that hole, buy them a bat house for next year, and hopefully they'll stick around to eat up all my mosquitoes, but stay OUTSIDE! I don't want to risk any future little people trying to catch one or pick it up and getting bitten by a frightened bat!
WOW - moles and bats. What fun stories - I loved the link to the mole page - so cute!
Great story as usual Marianne!!
Here is a bat website so that everyone can learn all about them (They're not as mean and scary as everyone thinks! Give em a chance!!!)

www.batcon.org

this is the link specifically about bats and rabies... at 1 death of humans per year... we're not talking about a big percentage here folks!

Marrianne, I'll say it again...I want to see you write a book about your animal adventures. You are such a natural writer. :clappurple:

I too was expecting a baby rabbit...we have a mole problem here and our neighbours ask us to let let the cats out at night to kill them. No saving them here...LOL. They like to give us presents on the doorstep too.
Hey thanks for that compliment!

Iriskmj - I like bats too!! Heard they eat up to 2000 mosquitoes nightly..yup gotta luv em!

As for releasing the mole in my garden..I actually was aware of what I was doing. Thought about it for a split second..hmmm neighbors yard or mine? .....I was tempted!! Ha Ha. Then the little angel voice prevailed over the other one..and I let him go in my garden. The site says while the holes may be unslightly they also do good work by eating pest and grubs.
