Trying to grow sheepie coat out!

Hi All! It has been awhile since I have posted a msge, but I do read posts on a regular basis.

My baby boy Bogart turned 1 on June 6th- I can hardly believe it. We had him on a regular schedule of being professionally groomed every 4 weeks and he still had his nice long coat. Well about 2 months ago- matts came out of nowhere and we had to have him shaved, much to my dismay :( He looks cute because the groomer left his legs full-like a Beddlington terrier and his head is cute. However, I am trying to regrow his coat. Thus he is at the groomers every 2 weeks now!

I told Bogart he needs to get a modeling career to support his beauty- LOL!!!! I try to brush him myself but w/o a table-it's me chasing him around the house with the brushes. My worry about the table is- he is 77lbs and lifting him up will kill my back. I am not willing to leave him short and give in. So- thoughts? I am so amazed that the adult coat is so much harder to work with then when he was a puppy.

For those of you that went to the OES picnic yesater day- hope you had fun!!! We didn't take Bogart- he still hates the car and gets car sick. My other issue-which I hope he can still grow out of.

Other than grooming and the car- he is a perfect sheepie and the apple of my eye :)

how about a ramp or a little set of steps so he can get up on the table by himself? I use a piece of plywood covered with carpet, and Walter figured it out very quickly...seems to like it too!
Hi:

I finally got a set of folding steps so that I could get Baxter (116 pounds) and Cassiopia (84 pounds) on the grooming table. We got them from PetEdge and once we taught Baxter and Cassiopia how to go up and down them, it made grooming the dogs a lot easier (and made it a lot easier on my back)

A stepstool should work, most dogs can jump on onto their table anyway without steps.... I just never let mine get on or off by themselves because I don;t want them to know they can. LOL
I know how you feel. We had Clyde clipped down a couple of months ago and I felt the same way and it sounds like they got the same hairdo! I was pretty upset ar first but he's growing out nicelt now and it's been about 2 1/2 months. I do like that I have a nice even cut to work with when I brush now.

Just wondering, what do they do to him at the groomer now that he's going every 2 weeks? I would think there isn't really anything to do. Clyde has almost 4 inches of hair now and he still only requires a quick brush down that takes me literally a minute!
I just had someone show me how they do it: They have their dog put his front legs on the table and give him a lift with the back legs. It seemed to work well, as he is a big boy!!
If you could use a table it would be easier. I had no trouble getting my
youngest one up there. He is about 90 pounds, so I just put his front
feet up there first and then bring up the back. My older dog really didn't
do it easily though. I started by putting a piece of ham in the center of the
table and teaching him the up command. I did this several times a day
for a few day. Then I started putting his back feet up as well and gave
him some ham, and took him down again. In no time at all he let me
put him up there one set of feet at a time.
Even if you have to put him on another table that isn't a grooming table
it will be easier than chasing him. I suspect he is going through the
coat change and it will get easier to groom him once that is over.
Good luck!

Shellie
Thank you all for the suggestions- I think I will order a table and some steps. The steps will come in handy for our bed too. Bogart is young enough so not a problem to jump on and off the bed, but we worry when he jumps off- don't want him to get hurt!

I just uploaded some pics of before and after his summer do. Once approved- I think if you click on the camera under my posting you will get to see them. He still looks handsome- but I miss his nice long sheepie fur!

To answer the question of what is done every two weeks at the groomers. They bath him and brush him out as his legs and head still have some length to them & they also lighly trim aroiund his eyes and rear end.
Good idea about steps from the bed......like he'll use them getting down. I believe that's why Simone has arthritis in her wrist now at only 7. All the jumping on and off furniture, on and off the porch, etc. Somewhere along the way she injured herself and now this is payment time.
