Dog food you use (if you're dog is allergy sensitive)

We're trying to narrow down the possibilities to why Yuki is licking her paw. She doesn't do it often, maybe 1-2 a day or even every other day, but it's enough to not let her yeast infection heal.

Mr. J is POSITIVE it's from the little pebbles and rocks that are all over our neighborhood ...and that's what another vet thinks as well.

The second vet we took her to thought it could be food ALTHOUGH in the same breath, she said she doesn't show a lot of the classic symptoms. Like, she's only licking one paw ...not both front ones or her back ones. Not followed by itching, ear mites, irregular stool, runny stool, or gas. She's perfect at the moment!! Perfect little stool, average gas, etc.

Either way, I'm amusing her and trying other foods. I know what not to look for/what to look for in regards to ingredients, but I was curious to what has worked for your dog (brand).

It seems like a lot of choices only give the average OES excessive gas or runny stool ...two things I'd like to avoid but have seen when other people have made posts looking for new dog food.

I'm looking for new foods you can find at a petstore only. I've done the whole buy online/somewhere else route, and that's not something I'm willing to do again right now.

Also looking for suggestions other than Iams and Science Diet. We've been there done that... and it either worked fabulously but the other dog in the house gets ahold of the food which she is highly allergic to, or the food gave her horrible gas. Thanks :)

We feed Panda Nutro...green bag with a sheepdog on the front....lamb and rice formula.....she has never ever had a problem with allergies...We buy it at Petsmart...
Bear eats Nutro too-- canned and dry. It agrees with him really well. Clyde eats ProPlan again because, although I switched him to Merrick because it was a better food, he did better on his ProPlan. I think the Merrick was too rich for him. Lucy's still on all Merrick and it's great for her.
Pepsi, Rags & Peanut all eat Authority - Lamb & Rice (Petsmart)
Pepsi cannot handle any other food. Harley had really bad allergies and it also helped him quite a bit. We also switch back and forth between the Chicken and Rice formula. Both have no filler and very good quality ingredients, best of all....no corn, which Harley was probably allergic too.
I believe Pepsi is also allergic to corn. Especially after his reaction to drinking the water we had boiled some corn in.
It is the only brand food that doesn't give Pepsi gas or soft stools.
I've always done great with Nutro.

However, I researched non-allergetic food to feed Dixie that I couls buy in a pet food store, instead of the precription food she was on. I chose a fairly new Canadian brand called First Mate. It is made in British Columbia, with fish and sweet pototoe. It is great. We used samples as treats for her, then weaned her onto it completely over a week, and she is doing fine. No licking, scratching or anything. And she loves it. This brand made the top foods for 2006, surprising enough...it being so new.
We feed Prurina ProPlan Extra Care for Sensitive Skin and Stomachs. It seems to agree with my group. We switched a while after one of our sheepies began allergy shots last year. She's allergic to dust mites and molds and had scratched 'til she bled, had hot ears and foot licking/chewing big time.

Whatever brand you go with, gradually switch over a period of maybe 10 days... 1/4 new to 3/4 old, 1/2 new to 1/2 old, 3/4 new to 1/4 old, then all new. It might help them to adjust to the food without a lot of "smell"
Okay, I will take your suggestions. Thanks.

My maltese used to be on nutro, but she's more allergic to that than anything else. Weird huh.. since it's a brand a lot of people I know switch to because their dog did better on it. Sigh.

I've always thought it was a good food though. I may want to try giving it to Yuki now. I'm just torn because my maltese has been acting fishy lately. The kind of fishy that makes me think her liver enzymes are elevated again (she's being SUPER clingy...which she only does when she's sick, and she's been sleeping by herself at night which she's never done in her life. even more strange that it's been cold at night too). I think it's something she's added to her diet because the only thing that has been different is her getting ahold of a few kibbles that Yuki drops while eating or gets a treat for peeing. Yuki is kind retarded ...see. Sometimes she comes to get her treat but being blind and all... she misses the kibble and knocks it down instead. The little dog on the otherhand never misses anything and is right there to gobble up stuff we don't like her eating. So, the type of food we get may have to be friendly to both dogs.
i think walter has allergies, we finally settled him on nutro lamb and rice and it stopped his runny stool and throwing up. BUT he still licks his paws :/
That's another concern of mine. Yuki has never had any sort of runny stool but I always hear that's common to see in OES'. Switching scares me (the experiences I could be in for).

Just to alleviate a little fear for you, Clyde has never had runny stool either (except when they were all sick a few months ago). The only time it softened was when we switched to Merrick and even then it wasn't horrible, but ProPlan worked better for him. I also tried him on Candidae (he just didn't like it) too all within the month and no poo transistion problems at all.
I've been using Chicken soup for the dog lover's soul, which sounds so silly, but it actually has good ingrediants and Scruffy does well on it. She's a picky eater and has a really sensitive stomach. We were using Innova Evo which is a dry food version of the raw food diet and it made scruffy really really sick. She had to stay in the hospital because she had such a bad bacterial infection. So I would not recommend that.
Easiest way to find out is to do an allergy test. I know it will cost quite a bit but you will know exactly what it is. My other OES used to lick her paws a lot and it was seasonal whenn pollen and grass weeds were high and less in the winter.... also maybe your vet can put her on venison or another perscription diet that might help. I would honestly go with the allergy test first cause I know that searching for the culprit of allergies can be exhausting.
