Bitting advise

Please help! Teddy Bear is our family dog, he is a year and a half and has been wonderful since day one. Our hearts are torn because last week Teddy bit a 12 yr old boy in our back yard. The boy had to get 3 stiches in his arm but is okay, thankfully. We have an 8 yr old and a 2 yr old and are afraid this will happen again. We are looking for a home for Teddy but we're not sure where to look. If anyone has any advice, we are willing to try anything.

Thank you

I am so sorry that your family is going through this. Do you have any idea what the circumstances were that lead to the bite? THere are many organizations that help place dogs in new homes. It would be helpful to know what kind of dog Teddy is and where you live.
Teddy Bear is an OES, and we live in West Texas. We had a sleep over and the boys were going to the back yard to swim the next morning. We had been in the back yard for about 3 minutes when I started to walk inside, the boy walked right behind me and Teddy just snapped. After the bite, Teddy instantly started hugging and licking him like he was trying to say sorry. He could of been startled, there were about 5 boys.
Meanness biting is fairly uncharacteristic behavior for OES. But, like all animals, they react out of instinct and the moment, they do not think about behavior, even though we sometimes like to credit them with such thoughts.

If your back was turned, its hard to tell exactly what happened. He might have been startled. He might have felt threatened by such a large group of rambunctious kids. We did have a dog once that was not very patient with children. I was always afraid our toddler would sit or pull up on him and he would snap (bite). We did find a new home for him, with my wife's parents. Our other sheepies were so patient that they would actually let the kids sit on them, pull up, etc.

I've got pictures, when they get them up...

Hi,

I'm sorry you are going through this, but if you've made the very difficult decision to rehome your Sheepie, there are many contacts for OES rescue here:

http://www.oes.org/html/oes_rescue.shtml

Also one of our own members "Shug" (Kaye) is also a rescue in Texas.
Her website is http://www.secondchanceoesrescue.com/
Her email address from that page is: SecondChanceOES@aol.com
I know she's been pretty busy lately, but then again, lots of rescues are busy.

Texas is B-I-G so perhaps one of the contacts in New Mexico or Oklahoma will suit you better. The link above also has contacts for those states.

Let us know if we can help any more!
Good luck.
Here's those pictures...

They can be VERY tolerant!
